Fairbanks' Scales. In a recent nambor of the Boston Daily Evening Traveler, is the following report of a case tried in the Supreme Court of that City. "The Plaintiffs claimed $90.00 balance due on a platform Scale sold defendant. The defence was, that the Scale was to be equal to a sample of Fairbanks' make. He claimed that it was inferior, and therefore demanded a deduction from the price. Evidence was introduced to show that the Scale applied was not of more than half the strength of the Fairbanks' Scale, with which it was to be equal in every respect. Verdict for plaintiffs, $64.60. We take the following tribute to the Agricultural College from the Americau Agriculturist, a most excel lent and valuable agricultural paper published in New York city. That paper says : "We are glad to learn that this, the pioneer institution of its kind in the country, is still in a flourishing condi tion. Like every new enterprise, it has had to contend against ignorance and prejudice. The Legislature of the State has now placed it in a condition to sustain itself until the lands granted by the General Government can be made available. Gbaded Schools. - The question has some times been asked, What is a Graded School? and oftener, what ;re its advantages? Answer, a Graded School is one in which children in the same advancement of their studies are put into the same class, from the lowest to the highest. It may be large or it may be small. If the school is large, the distinctions between the different classes can be more clearly marked, as there will be of necessity more teach ers, and if the house be properly ar ranged each teacher will have his or her work in a separate room. The philosophy of this plan is simple, and only needs to be stated to be seen. The mind, like the body, passes thro' certain stages of growth, or develop ment between infancy and manhood, and since educating is awakening and calling into action the mental powers, a Graded School takes advantage of this fact and puts together and teaches together to those in each of these stages those standing on each of these successive platforms. Such a grada tion, based on such a philosophy, im plies a course of instruction as graded as the scholars ; and this course of in struction should contain the best things, in each of its parts, to develop the mind at that particular stage. Such is a true Graded School. Has it any advantages? Many every way, is the answer of every man who has made education his study for any considerable time. If it be granted that the men who have made this sub- j ject the study of a lifetime, started with the usual amount of common sense, and it would only demonstrate a man's lack of the same to deny it, it cannot be denied that they are better prepared to judge of the accuracy of this philos ophy than those who have never given the subject a dozen consideration thoughts in their lives. Now it hap pens that the men who stands head and shoulders above the masses in the pro fession, both in Europe and America, have not only apopted this theory, but consider it worthy of their most care ful study. All improvements in the educational world are in this direction, the best course of instruction is the one great subject of study among our enlightened educators. But this is only the authority argument we are able to prove our position by a careful ex amination of the subject itself. Week before last there were given in the col umnsof this paper, the figures showing that our school costs no more per schol ar per month than common schools of this county; hence, far better teaching is obtained for the same money in a Graded School than in miscellaneous schools. This is true in more ways than one. In a Graded School, pri mary teachers teach only primary studies, and of course can better adopt their general exercises and all of their instruction to their pupils, than they could do were they teaching all grades, from lowest to highest. They have a few studies upon which to concentrate their mental energies, and it would be passing strange if they could not teach those few things better than they could three or four times that number of wide ly different branches. And what is true of primary teaching is equally true of every other grade. Besides this, our whole school is included in the cal culations referred to, and in that were several higher branches than are taught in our common schools. In the Graded School, then, we get a better quality, and a higher grade of teaching a wider range of studies than is obtained in unclassified schools. The cost of these branches should be compared with school expenses in Academies and Seminaries, and if that were done, it would leave the cost of that part of our school which corresponds, in rane;e of studies, with our common schools, about two thirds as great as the cost per scholar of the county schools of the county. With this showing of facts, and I invite investigation as to their ac curacy, can any man doubt the utility of a Graded School that it has ad vantages over any other plan of school organization yet devised. I I From the earliest ages wine has been known and esteemed one of the choicest productions of the earth. It is rendered proverbial in Scripture. In the present age good wine is not only valued as a luxury, but there are several kinds which are held in high estimation by the medical profession, aud form a valuable commodity in every good dispen sary. In Europe there are upwards of fifty differ ent kinds of wine, obtained from as many different kinds of grapes. But it has remained for modern science and skill to produce a luxurious ond de lightful wine from medical plants and roots. The object has been fully accomplished in an article called Db. HALSEY'S FOREST WIJCE. From a formula of roots, plants etc., of the highest medi cal order, is here j reduced a pure wine, equal, if not superior, in flavor to any imported, at the same time retain iug all the virtues of one of th best medical formulas ever known. No invalid can object to take the Forest Wine on account of disagreeable taste, and none can take it without being convinced of its great value as a medical agent. From our own experience we can vouch for the excellence of this wine ; and we trust that every one, whose health is in the leat im paired, will read Dr. Halsey's advertisement, which will be found in our columns to-day, aud avail themselves of the remedy. TO THOSE WHO DON'T THINK We say that, RADWAY'S READY RELIEF is the most elegant and powerful medicine known in the world. This is not boasting ; try it, if you feel sceptical and be convinced. It combines in its composition the properties of a diffusive stimuiant, an anti-septic, a mild but effective astringent, and a direct power over the nerves, neither narcotic nor anodine, that relieves pain, in a manner pecu liar to itself, and for which we have no word in the English language exactly to express its action. The French call it Sovlagement. So much for its internal administration. When applied external ly, it will be found a most powerful counter-irritant, instantly reddening the surface to which it is applied, and" withdrawing the blood from some neighboring part, where it may be congested or heaped up, causing pain and leading to inflama tion. It fulfills the indication of equalizing the cir culation most effectively, and most beautifully to minds that can understand its action. TO THOSE WHO THINK. Now. we hold that, all external remedies act ei ther in one of two ways, or combine the action ot both. First They act directly upon the nervous system without touching the blood vessels the sanguiferous system. All Arnica liniments, nerve liniments, Ac, Ac, belong to this class, and con sequently only benumb the endsof the nerves, with out affecting at all the circulation, may tempo rarily stop pain but have not the slightest effect in restoring the equilibrium of circulation, essen tial to healthy action. Or, SecoNnLT They act upon the blood vessels without, as in the case of depletives, Leeches or Cups,) regard to the nervous system. Now, the fact is that, the nerves pre side over the blood vessels, aud an external appli cation to be effective, must act upon both nerves and blood vessels. RADWAY'S READY RELIEF, We proclaim, has this double action of assuaging; pain, by its specific effect upon the nerves and eoualizinar the circulation, by its effect upon the blood vessels. In this way it relieves and cures Rheumatism, Lumbago, Toothache, Headache, and a variety of such like complaints. When taken in ternally", its astringent and diffusive stimulating properties check in the most natural manner Di arrhoeas, Colics, and other bowel complaints. Whilst for Sore Throats, accompanied by putres ency, and for Fever patients, with Typhoid symp toms, an eminent physician attached to the New Orleans Hospital, has pronounced it far superior as an anti-septic and anti-putrescert, to the celebrated Eau Med iein ale of Raspail.
