A STRANGE STORY. Some weeks ago a man named A. C. Temple, a citizen of New York, myste riously disappeared at Burning Sprmg.s. Within the last few days suspicion fas tened on a person named Robert S. Steinwoy as the murderer, and accord ingly ho was arrested. Since his arrest he bag written and published the follow ing extraordinary statement in the Far kersburg Times, of Monday last: Eds. Times: My object in writing this communication is to lay before the pub lic the fact attending the distressing death of the late Alviu C. Temple, of tho city of New York, as I have just been arrested here on a charge of being ac cessory to, and the cause of it I am here without friends or acquaintances, and must go to prison for want of bail. I hope, however, in the course of a lew days, to exonerate myself from all sus picion of any complicity in the death of my friend. The deceased and myself were both residents of New York, and had been acquainted nearly ten years; about the middle of September last we left home together on a tour to the oil regions of Southern Ohio and West Virginia, We came first to Marietta, Ohio, and visited the oil wolla of Dack cretk. We then visited successively Horse-neck, Sand JJ ill. White Oak, and Burning Springs. We arrived at tho latter placo on the af ternoon of Friday, October 20. We spent Saturday in visiting the various 6il wells. Huuday morning we started on a ramble to moke some observations as to the nature of the country. From this ramble Mr. Temple never returned, and upon this circumstance I have been arrested. I hope the public, after hear ' my statement, will suspend its judg ment u,tl I can offer morfl Proof o( m entire innocence. Mj Temple, being something of a geologist, carried a leather sack, suspended by strap over the" shoulder, to contain the specimens collected, and in his band hammer, with a handle three feet long, sucU as is commonlv used by geologists. We crossed the Burning Spring run at the mouth, and climbed up the bill on the upper side. About three-fourths of the, way up we discovered an opening in the rocks, caused probably by some convul lion of the earth- Jnto this we found that we eould crawl some fifteen feet, when further progress was stoppeu hj the fissure becoming narrower. Temple, by thrusting in hi hammer, ascertained that the passage soon widened again, and that by removing some of the pieces of rock we could go on We procured a sapling which we found on the ground above, and which we used as a battering ram. We could hear the pieces fall as they were posbad inward, and from the sound knew the de scent could be but a few feet I went first, when he had opened the way, and de scended by letting myself down by the bands. Temple followed. Lighting a match and piece of paper, we found oureelvei in a cavern about tweU fcel square in whiih we could stand upright l'iecea of broken rock, varying in sue from an egg to a barrel, covered the ground. Temple collected aome speci mens, principally sand rock and feldspar, which he put into a sack to be examined at leisure. Our progress wag very dim cult on account of the loose aad jngged stones. Partly fceliug our way, and now and then lighting a match, we manaced to ascertain rhat I have related, and also to discover ftssuro pearly opposite where we entered, some three feet in width at the bottom and grad aally narrowing toward the top. Crawling into this, wo found it made a considerable descent uotil )t oppnpd into a spacious cave, the dimensions o('wLi-b I cannot state, as it was not thoroughly explored. We found here the same chaos of Uyoken rocks, and were continually bruLsiurf ourselves in climbing over and trough the. Proceeding some thirty vards we saw a light od or nftbt, which troved U bo caused by a pli to rock. Lookio through it, we could ace the bills on tjjfl opposite bank of the Kanawha, but coula G0 open our way out Leaving this on our nfcht, ye pro ceeded to make what explorations our limited means would allow. After gome perhaps tifty yards, we were surprised at finding a .mall lake, or pool, aj w ar as I Can judge, some sixty fect in length Ly twenty feel wide. Ita level was some three fet fcclow the ground on which we Hood. Temple inserf.-d his hammer into tliis pao. and found that instead or water it was oilpetroleum. I have not time to describe our accaaljons on this dis covery, which promiaed untoU wealth. After diwusting the matter for a lew minutes, be pMempted to try the depth with the handle of his hammer. He girt a fcr the brink as he could, and was about exeowtinj hia design, when the loose stone, on wh.ch be tod suddenly caved in with him. He sunk.rcrfW aja, strucflcd a mcmint, and i aw him no G MEMPHIS. TENNESSEE. TUESDAY EVENING. NOVEMBER 20, r t : . "t : "rTrrzrr"r7i"zrri more. I was cowerlest to assist him. even if I had not been completely bewil dered. The weight of the specimens in hit sack, no doubt, prevented him from saving himself, as be was a capital swim mer. The horror of my situation may be imagined. - I stood alone in that cave wherein wag death and darkness, fully aware that when I went out into the light I would only meet gtrangers and suspicion. I called my companion by name again and again, until terrified by the sepulchral echoes that resounded through the blackness. - This is the true statement of the fact Whether it will be credited is more thiin I can say.. I am fully aware how dilli cult it is for me to answer the question, " Why did you not make this stntement sooner?" Here is my reply: When I left the cave, I went to my room at the hotel. Overwhelmed as I was, I could not help being sensible that the discov ery was an important one, and resolved to secure the benefits of it; so I kept the matter quiet until my designs should be accomplished. To this end I ob tained a favorable lease, from the agents of the Rathbone Oil Company of the ground covering the cave. This lease, as the county records will show, was made the day after the oecurrence above revealed. It is made to George Tem ple, the fnther of Henry V. Tem ple, the brother of the late AlvinC. Tem ple. , I have not reserved to myself, di rectly, or indirectly, any part of this lease. I hope this circumstance will go far to show that I could have no motive in causing the death of my friend. I do not think hia relutives, or those who knew me, will entertain the slightest bus- Ficion to my prejudice. Yet I feel that can never have a moment's peace of mind until the judgment of everybody shall acquit me of the charge. , And now, Messrs. Editors, I request that you will give the foregoing statement a place in your paper, and thereby oblige a friend less and grief-stricken man. Robert S. Steinwat. 1 The Ghiont aad Susint Opera Troupe. The grand opening of the Ghioni and Susini Italin Opera, under the director ship of Max Strakosch, took place last evening at the St Charles, and we are n eased to announce was a brilliant suc cess. The dress circle and parquette of the theatre were filled with the elite of the city, while the upper circles of the house were also well patronized. The rich toilets of the audience, with the at tending paraphernalia of fans, opera glasses and bouquets, presented a most magnificent Scene, and made one suppose the St. Charles was tho garden of beauty and love. Tbo overture by the orches tra, preceding the opera, was given in a masterly style, and reflects much credit on the talented leader, Senor Nicolao. The orchestra is full, and under bis di rection was very effective throughout the entire rendition of Verdi's 11 Tro vatore, this being the opera which last night inaugurated the sea son. Tho choruses throughout were full, and the most thoroughly ill natured could not possibly find fault; while for tho principal characters, we may in passing more fully remark. Sig nor Ettore Irfre, the world-renowned primo tenor, made his first bow to a New Orleans audience, in his high dramatic role of ',' Manrico," and the furore which he created wag another flattering proof of his ability. In the third act, his high C, or ul de poilxine, in the ana Di quella pira, was indeed grand, and in the fourth act, " The Miserere," would alone stamp Irfre as the equal of Mario or Lamberlick. No lover of the grand and proper interpre tation of the tenor roles should fail to hear him. The world-renowned Mme. Patti Strakohch, in her impersonation of Azfcena, was pcrlect throughout the piece. She was in excellent voice, and her Etu Utignori, in the second act, was encored rppeatedly. She is ic J'rima J)onna CunlrallQ of the Operatic Stage. Her splendid voice, good noting, uud personal attractions, doubtless add much to the foma Of the troupe. M'me Angiolini (Ibioni, the pi1 ma donna unao. luta, in her great rolo of "Lenora," was delightful. She was in excellent voice, her toilet in the various eels were suherb, apd in the rendition of "The Miserere," jn the fourth set, with Signor Irfre, the audience highly appreelatud h?r talent as an artiste by rounds of ?pplauso. Sig. Marra and Sig. Coletti were, as usaiil, good in their roles of "Count Iii Luni" and "Ferrando." as was also kiignoru Parozzi as "Inez." At the conclusion of the opera, tue smiling intra i me ic tiring audience well attt'slpd their entire satisfaction with its rendition. To-night, Verdi's grand (mid best) opera, rnani will be rendered, upon wbii-h occasion the appearance of the renowned Primo Basso Profundo, Sig. Augumiue Susini, is announced in his role of " Uuc de Silva." H j? stated thnt he 1ms entirely regained bit'volce, ahd a rtr? Iilii'-ul treut may be expected Ly lle visum to tl(u bt.
