The presenta tion of Meyerbeer's L'Africaine drew another large and fashionable audience to the New Memphis Theatre on Satur day night, who appeared to be delighted with the charming singiug, magnificent music, rich dresses and beautiful scenery. It must be gratifying to Manager Thomp son to see and feel that his expensive efforts to provide first class operas in proper style have been appreciated by our citizens, who avail themselves of thi rarely offered privilege by crowding th theatre nightly. . This is as it should be. To-night Bellini's grand opera Norma will be produced with a splendid cast Some of the beautiful music of this opera is femiliar to nearly everybody, and the plot may be summed up as follows : The Romans having effected the subjugation of Gaul, committed the government of the province to "Pollio," a Pro-Consul, who became enamoured of "Norma," daughter of the Arch-Druid (Druidism being at that time the religion of the country), and who, besides the respect awarded her from the considcratien of her birth and connections, was regarded by. the superstitions ; multitude as the unerring oraclo through whom their grand deity Irminsul, condescended to convey to his faithful votaries his divine decrees. " Norma " having been secret ly united to Pollio, the Roman Gover nor, the consequence was the birth of two children, which circumstance she keeps secret from all, excepting " Clo tilda" "Pollio" afterwards deserts " Norma," and transfers his affections to " Adalgi'sa," a young; priestess of the' Temple of Irminsul, who permits a aim ilar passion to kindle in her bosom for the faithless Roman, who, after much persuasion, succeeds in gaining her con sent to abandon the Temple, and fly with him to Rome. Remorse, however, soon takes possession of her breast, and in her agony, she resolves to reveal all to "Nor ma,'' who is already laboring under the influence of slighted love. " Pollio " makes his appearance at the instant that " Adalgisa " is relating her story to " Norma," whose anger is transformed iuto the wildest fury, on being informed by "Adalgisa". that he is the corruptor of her youthful heart, and she bitterly reproaches "Pollio" for his infidelity and baseness. "Norma" seeks her children, still under the influence of rage, and bent on their destruction, which she is on the point of accomplishing, when the full tide of maternal feeling rushes into her heart, and arrests her uplifted arm. She next resolves to destroy her self, and as a preliminary step, requests " Adulgisa " to take charge ef her chil dren, who, moved by her distress, en deavors to allay her perturbation, and premises to persuade " Pollio" to re turn to her. In anticipation of her suc cess, "Norma" becomes more tran quilized, and indulges hopes of brighter days. The illusion is of short duration. " Clotilde " soon after informs her that "Adalgisa" has been unsuccessful, and that the Roman persists in his determi nation to possess her. Intelligence soon after arrives that a' Roman has been discovered in a certain part of the Temple, exclusively appropriated to the use of the Virgins, who, on being - introduced, proves to be "Pollio." Another scene of re crimination ensues between him with " Norma," in which she threatens the life of " Adalgisa." " Pollio" pleads for her, but the other is inexorable, and orders, the pile to be prepared, and, on the name of the victim being demanded, she publicly announces herself. All present are struck with horror and amazement, anxious to know the nature of her crime; this she reveals to her father, by informing him that she is a mother. "Pollio's" first passion rekin dles in his breast at this, her devotion, and he gladly ascends the pile with her, after she has recommended her children and " Clotilde" to the care of her father. Eltoni' great clearing sale- Bee their ad vertisemenU A Strasok Casi. A gentleman named Percival, accompanied by a lady, arrived in the city on Saturday and put up at the Overton Hotel Shortly afterward he went to police headquarters, gave an accurate description of a man named Stansifer, and offered a reward of five hundred dollars for Lis delivery to him at the Overton. An advertisement of fering the above reward and a propor tionate one for any information in regard to him was published in the' Sunday morning papers. Yesterday evening Col. Beaumont received information that a man answering the description of Stan sifer was bearding at a house in Pinch, when he repaired there and requested the individual to accompany him to the Overton. ' He did so, and was soon in the presence of Mr. Percival and the lady. The latter uttered an exclamation of joy ful surprise and was about to embrace Stansifer, when he repulsed her with a semi-lunatic air. A short conversation served to remove the temporary insanity, when ho engaged in general conversation with the lady, who proved to be bis wife, and the gentleman, who was bis brother-in-law. Last night the happy trio left for Covington, Ky., where they reside. We learn that Stansifer is in business at that place, had $2000 given him by his partner to pay a note, fell into the company of gamblers, was fleeced, and then ran away to hide bis shame. He is respectably connectedt and bis relations will willingly make the amount good in hopes that the lesson he has received may be a profitable one to him and a warning to others. Proctor, Jr., Professor of Pharmacy in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy: "Will the Fluid Extracts go out of use owing to the high prices, or can we have some authoritative modifications of the formulas by which we can make them at a more reasonable cestT If the latter, shall the change be in the quality of the menstruum, or the manner of applying it, so as to reduce the quantity requsite? Can there be a convocation of the Com mittee of Revision to authorize some new method or modification of the pres ent recipes?" With regard to the con templated change in the quantity, or in the menstruum itself, in the preparation of fluid extracts, I would take occasion to soy that in medicine the health of the patient is the great object to be gained. The cost of the material is something, but .when put in the scale with human health, and often human life, it is hardly worthy of consideration at all. My Bu chu (Helmbold's) will continue to be made as formerly, and if it cannot be maintained at present prices, they will have to be advanced to meet the advance in the price of material To such as de aire quantity instead of quality we would say that water is a cheap commodity, and may be readily added by the person using the medicine if he desires to do so. . :' n. Pratt was taken before Esquire Miller for examination, on Saturday evening, on the charge of feloniously entering the room of J. W. Several wit nesses being absent, the consideration of the case was postponed until this morn ing, Pratt being sent to jail, and his application for release on bail refused. This morning at eleven o'clock, Esquire Miller took his scat in the Police Court, and after waiting for some time, Messrs. Ed. Yerger, Sale and Cam eron, attorneys for prisoner, de manded that the trial proceed. Esquire Miller stated that witnesses were absent; that he would wait for them until four o'clock; if the attorneys liked. to leave court they might do so; it was none of his business. Colonel Gantt, Attorney for State, made a few remarks, when the witnesses arrived, and it transpired that they had been before the Grand Jury, who would probably return a true bill for burglary against Pratt The witnesses were being sworn when we left court and closed our report Fire and Marine Insurance. Interior oonaists et' tlwues or veins, which serve as a deposit for the urine and convey it to the exterior. The exte rior is a conductor also, terminating in a single tuba and called the Ureter. The ureters are connected with the bladder. The bladder is composed of various coverings or tissues, divided into parts, vit : the Upper, tne Lower, me nervous, anu tneMueous. ine uoner expels, the lower retains. Many have a desire to urinate without the ability, others uri nate wituout tne anility to retain. This fre quently occurs in children. To cure these affections we must bring into action the muscles, which are engaged in their various functions. If they are neglected, Gra vel or Dropsy may ensue. x The reader must also be made aware, that however slight may be the attack, it ia suregto affect his bodily health and mental powers: as our flesh and blood are supported from these sources. GOUT, Oil RHEUMATISM. Pain occurring in the leins la Indicative of tha above diMasei. They occur in persons dis posed to acid stomach and chalky concretions. THE GRAVEL. The gravel ensues from neglect er improper treatment of the kidneys. These organs being weak, the water is not expelled from the blad der, but allowed to remain; it becomes feverish sndsodiment forms. It is from this deposit that the stone is formed nnd gravel ensnes. DROPSY is a collection of water in some parts of the body, and bears different names, according to the pru affected, vis.: when generally diffused over the body, it is called Anasarca; when of the abdomen. Ascites; when of the chest, iiydrothorax. TREATMENT. Helmbold's highly concentrated compound Extract Uochu is decidedly one of the bet remedies for diseases of the bladder, kidneys, gravel, dropsical swelling rheumatism, and gouty affections. Under this bead we have ar ranged Dysuria, or ditliculty and pain in pass ing water, scanty secretion or small ana fre quent discharges of water. Strangury or stop ping of water, Hermaturia or bloody urine. Gout and Rheumatism of the kidneys, without any change in quality, but inoreasa of color or dark water. It was always highly recommended by the late Dr. Physick, in the-? affections. This medicine increases the power of diges tion and excites the abjorbeuts into healthy ex ercise, by which the watery or calcareous de positions and ail unnatural enlargements, as well as pain and inflammation, are reduced, and is taken by MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN. Hm.auoi.u, Drugxist. lhar -Sir: I have beenasuffererforupwards of twenty years, with gravel, bladder aud kid ney affections, during which time I have used various medicinal preparations, and been un der the treatment of the most eminent physi cians, experiencing but little relief. Having seen your preparations extensively advertised, I consulted with my family physi ciun In regard to using your Extract Bucnu. I did this because I had used all kinds of ad vertised remedies, and bad found them .worth less, and soma quite injurious; in fact, 1 de spaired of ever getting well, and determined to use no remedies nereaiter unless l anew oi tne ingredients. It was this that prompted me to use your remedy. As you advertised that it was composed of oio-aii. mbebt and juniper her rirn, it occurred to me and my physician as an excellent combination, and, with his advice, after aa examination of the article, and con sulting again with the druggist, I concluded to try it. I commenced its use about eight months ago, at which time I was confined to my room. From the first bottle I was astonished and grat ified at the bent'ficial effect, aud after using it three weeks was able to walk out. I felt much like writing you a full statement of my case at that time, but thought my improvement might only be temporary, and therelore concluded to defer and see if it would eO'cct a perfect cure, knowing then It would be of greater value to you and more satisfactory to me. I am now able to report that a cure it effected after using the remedy for five months. I bave not used any now for three months, and feel as well in ail respects aa I ever did. Your Buchu being devoid of any unpleasant taste and odor, a nice tonic and invigorator of the system, 1 do not mean to be without it whenever occasion may roiuire its use in such affections.
