-AuGKRIC TJXj T UEAL Jerusalem Artichoke and Japan Pen. Written lor tho Ohio Parmer, by W. ). Lindsley, of Sandusky City, Ohio. Much has been said recently in in your very valuable paper in re gard to the Jerusalem Artichoke. 1 do not know as I am acquainted witli that variety. I have raised two kinds, tho white and red. r$Q former I consider almost wortb while the latter is vciy valuabk .stock. It the red is the Jerus AiucnoKc, too mucn cannot j iu its favor. . I liave raised the last fifteen or eighteen yea7 frequently planting from or two acres or more. They will, wWr planted in a rich, loose soil, yield from 1,000 to 2,000 bushels per acre I have taken from a single hill, only one stock in a hill, more than I could fill in and upon half a bushel, some of which would meas ure fro'i four to six inches in diam eter, and from six to ten inches in length. My mode of cultivating them is the same as that of the potatoe. 1 usually turn my stock, horses, cat tle, sheep and hogs upon them to wards spring, all of win h take an active part in digging and eating them, hast season J raised an acre, and turned in my stock the first of this month. I never dig them, except for my horses and oxen, which I keep constantly in the stable. I am, however, of the opinion that a more healthful escu lent cannot be fed to stock. They become remarkably fond of them. Horned stock in particular, if allow- m io ioiow nogs 1 i O II t W'bere the if OWtll ' 11 I Ml i SO mJIIiy is unusually large, win eat so iil-iiiy as to kill themselves. A few years since I lost one of my most valuable cows in that way, since which time I keep watch and when I find my my cattle have eaten all they need, I turn them on' of the field for the day, J consider these roots one of our most valuable crops, especially lor tne hogs, as it costs but little to raise them, and their yield is more abundant than that of any other. 1 havo adopted the plan of raising a few acres of the Japan Pea in the same field where I grow my Arti chokes. This pea is very hardy. froWS about tlirCC foot high anil''cst garter of section No. Sixteen,! J usually turn my hogs in upon them' and will first eat the pea and then! feed upon the Ariichoke, and upon them both, fatten rapidly. I have been in the habit of giving the Ar tichoke to all that would take the trouble of calling upon me for them and shall continue to do so, I will not, as a matter of course, be ex pected that I will dig. box them up, and send them to thc public free of charg Th r.' are those engaged in that kind of business; that is, boxing up, and selling. The Artichoke 1 ar.t raising is Ked, completely enriched ith tu bers, which arc so compact as to make it almost solid.
