Brown of Breeds ville visited their son, Wells G. Brown, this week. The painting and penciling of the long brick store have made it a very hand some business place. Misses Zenia and Martha Mason have been at South Haven, visiting their uncle there from Chicago. Commissioner Brown entetained Supt. W. W. Chalmers of the Toledo, Ohio, schools, Saturday of last week. The union service Sunday evening will be held in tho Baptist church; sermon by Rev. Wm. Millar of Galesburg. Mrs. S. E. Munger and Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Cate left Monday for Missouri, for tho benefit of Mrs. Munger's health. Many people are planning to go on the Free Baptist excursion to Benton Har bor, to-morrow. 55 cents pays for the round trip. The Paw Paw band will give a danco at the opera house Thursday evening. The boys are trying to raise money for new uniforms. There will be services at the Lee schoolhouse next Sunday afternoon at three o'clock. Rev. E. II. Harvey will deliver the address. Mrs. M. L. O'Dell has purchased Mrs. Gardner's line of Brainard & Armstrong wash silks and lias added new colors and also a line of stamped patterns. Rev. R. W. Grace of Detroit has been appointed assistant pastor of the Catho lic church. He came to the village last week and will reside with Fr. Wall. Farmers complained a little about tho corn rolling, on account of the dry, hot weather. They haven't done so since the drenching rain of Monday night. Last Saturday, before Justice Row land, Jesse Stafford, charged with being drunk and disorderly, plodded guilty and was given 612 or ten days. He paid. Miss Leta Packer has accepted a po sition as teacher in the 2nd primary of the Watervliet school, taking in addi tion the class in German in the high school. Wm. Bryant is building a new cottage for Fred M osier and P. M. Young of De catur, on tho south side of Four Mile lake. Fred and his wife will occupy it next week. The Paw Paw band will give an open air concert each Saturday evening. The band is excellently organized, furnishes good music, and the people will find it worth while to hear the concerts. Tho ladies of the St. Mary's church in vite you to their sociable, Thursday. A picnic supper will be served from 5 to G o'clock, and ice cream during the after noon and evening. An enjoyable time is promised. The Paw Paw Fruit Evaporating works are now being thoroughly over hauled and put in shape, anil will bo ready in a short time to start in, with prospects for the largest volume of busi ness since the starting of the plant. The examination of George Collin-:, charged with obstructing tho sheriff in the discharge of official duty at South Haven on the Hh of July, was begun yesterday before Justice Rowland and was continued until to-morrow afternoon. The examiuntion of George W. Hicks, charged with setting fire to the dwelling occupied by M. J. Litchard, was begun before Justice Rowland last Friday. After taking the testimony of several witnesses, further proceedings were ad journed until to-morrow. Landlord John Ihling is entertaining quite a good many resorters at tho Pen insular these days. He has closed a con tract with tho Congress club of Cincin nati to take a ten days' outing at Lako Cora, commencing August 19. There will be 125 or more in the party. Over in Germany the horseless carriago is called autoraobiletaxameterdroschken. It would bo simply tempting fate to let a thing with that name run more than six miles an hour. Hero in Paw Paw thero is an institution called "the great whalo clothing success." Their tempt ing fate is a sale run at great speed, men tioned as astonishing by patrons. At the council meeting Monday even ing, little business was transacted ex cept tho usual routine. A petition was presented, signed by a number of citizens, asking for tho lllling of Kalamazoo street between tho two bridges and the con struction of a sidewalk along this part of tho street. Referred to tho street committee. Some letters from Contractor Pearl were read, in which ho says ho will finish up his waterworks contract just as soon as ho can succeed in bringing tho pump people to time. The peoplo here hope that will be very soon. A small batch of claims wero allowed. Sellick's great July sale continues. Mrs. L. B. Sheldon is having her house repainted. The Home bakery has a new adv. in this paper. The Women's Exchange is now reopen ed for business. E. B. Longwell advertises monster bar gains for Saturday. Waters & Co. have some intererting advertising this week. I. J. Cumings advertises a continua tion of his clearance sale. The First Baptist Sunday school has a picnic at Lake Park to-day. C. W. Young went to Grand Rapids last night, on state fair business. A number of fishermen have recently taken good sized pickerel from Pugsley's lake. Mrs. J. H. Desmond is enjoying a visit from a sister and three children from Chicago. Lewis Hoag of Lacota and Geo. Chap man of Lawrence have purchased Snow furnaces. Mrs. Dell Eastman and daughter of Chicago have been visiting relatives here for a few days. A trick bicycle rider gave some exhi bitions on the street yesterday afternoon and evening, taking up collections in the crowd. Prosecutor Chandler will leave to morrow for Long lake, near Cheboygan, to spend a vacation, the guest of E. S. Roos of Kalamazoo. A civil matter, Salsbury vs. DoVorce, occupied Justice Mason's court yester day. A jury trial was had. Salsbury got judgment for 1. The village tax roll is at Showerman Bros.' store, where you can get a receipt for your taxes. All taxes are now due and should be paid promptly. Growing corn has not looked so well in years in this locality as at the present time. A good, big crop is in prospect, which will in a measure compensate for the extraordinary shortage in the wheat yield. The South Haven & Eastern will run an excursion to South Haven, Sunday, July 30, leaving Lawton at 8:30 a.m., Paw Paw 8:10, Lake Cora 8:52, Lawrence 9:00, Hartford 9:10, Toquin 9:31, Covert 9:42; round trip 25 cents. Tho excursion to South Haven on Sun day last was well patronized and all re port a delightful trip. With tho mer cury at 100 in the shade, it is a relief to visit the beach and be fanned by the cool breezes from Lake Michigan. Some Paw Paw people would like to see an occasional special train from Lake Cora to this village, in order that the re sorters could come into town easily. Such arrangement would doubtless ac comodate them and benefit cur mer chants. Cottages at Lake Park are all occu pied these days, John Ihling has a good crowd at Lake Cora, and campers are on the south side of the lake all the time. Three Mile lake, as always, has its out ing parties. The Paw Paw resorts aro all appreciated this year. John A. Drown died at his home in this village, Wednesday, July 19, aged ii years. He was an old and respected resident. He leaves a widow and son, Henry Drown. A brief service was held at the residence, Thursday, conducted by Rev. Anna Barton, after which the remains were taken to Rose, N. Y., for burial. At a meeting of the Lawton Masonic lodge, July 22, it was voted to hold tho annual picnic of tho blue lodge and Or der of the Eastern Star at St. Joseph, July 27, and the Masonic fraternity will have special cars for their accommoda tion on to-morrow's excursion. All Masons, members of the Eastern Star and their families are invited, from all along tho line. A basket picnic dinner will be had in the park. Tho all rail, through train excursion announced for to-morrow (Thursday) to St. Joseph and Benton Harbor merits a liberal patronage. For one day, at least, the dream of a direct railway lino between Paw Paw and the twin cities is to be realized. By a special arrangement with the C. & W. M. Ry. coaches will be run through, going and returning, and no transfer of passengers will bo nocessary. In every detail this excursion is just what tho people have long desired. Tho county Sunday school rally, to bo held at South Haven, Wednesday, Aug ust 2, promises to bo a successful affair, in which all Sunday schools of tho county are expected to unite. A special train on tho S. II &. L. leaves Lawton at 8:00 a. m., Paw Paw 8:10, Lako Cora 8:25, Lawrenco 8:35, Hartford 8:55, faro 35 cents for round trip; Toquin 9:15, Covert 9:35, fare 25 cents. Returning, train will leavo South Haven at 0:00 p. m. On arrival at South Haven, wagons will be in waiting to carry baskets to tho grove for picnic dinner, and tho schools will form in parade, led by the South Haven band, under direction of W. O. Cook as chief marshal, tho town ship vice presidents acting as assistant marshals. A shot line drill will bo given by tho lifo saving crew at 2 p. m., and tho steamer "City of Grand Rapids" will run an excursion on tho lako. A song servico will bo given in tho afternoon, and an address by Rev. James A. Pierce. This promises to bo ono of tho best ex cursions of tho year.
