A lady of this city, cf the highest respeta

the. vicissitudes of dame fortune became
"operated from her husband during the
days of the Confederacy. For years
' jrd nothing of him, and at last the
holy conclusion was aoceptad that
(eadrtt the meantime she became
ed , ia circiTmbtaTces, and at the time
iienth Federal troops occupied the "city
ydhe was compelled to dispose of her costly
and elegant furniture. This she did, piece
( by piece, until the last object which served
to bind her to her former independence had
J been sold, and she began to despair. Only
s a few days ago she received a letter from a
gentleman residing in Mississippi, in which
she was informed that her husband had
"lately died, leaving a fortune of over sixty
thousand dollars, of which she was the only
'Ljir. A check for one thousand dollars
accompanied the letter for her immediate
cta, and she immediately took her de
rture for the place where her unexpected
lortune awaited hor. If- appears that her
?husband, h in& enlisted in the army, was
discharged on account ot uinesi, and owing
to the unsettled state of the country, pre
ferred to remain in the extreme South until
the cloae of the war. While there he be
came engaged in various speculations, and
made large amounts of mouey, intending to
rejoin, hia family as soon as peace was de
clared. He invested his money in cotton,
and had just disposed of it when death
closed hia career. lie had written many
letters to his wife, but strange ta say, none
of them reached her; the above letter being
the . first . information she had been able to
obtain as to his fate.
