'Missouri Oil Items.
Thcro no longer exists a doubt of tho
cxistenco in Missouri of tho oleaginous
treasure Wo recoivo almost daily ac
counts of new discoveries. Indications
have boon noticed as .high up as St.
Joseph. Thcro is rdason to bclicvo lhat
oil exists in many othor localities, not
yet explored. Tho counties of Salino
and Callaway so much eoldbrated for do
posits of canncl coal, will doubtless turn'
out to be groat oil yielding locahtcs
Forf. J. II. McIIvono, geologist, in
a letter to tho St. Louis Republican up
on tho subject of petroleum in Missouri,
predicts that in fivo years railroads will
bo. required to acoommodato tho im-
monso oil trado of tho valleys of tho
Chariton and Grand River, and that
Glasgow and Brunswick will becomo tho
groat coal and oil marts of Missouri
valloy.
The St. Louis Dispatch says: " Wo
recently announced that a substan
tial discovery of coal oil had bocn mado
in Callaway county, and that prepara
tions wcro being made by D., A. Janu
ary of this city, on whoso property tho
discovery was mado, to test tho extent
and resources of tho oil-bearing locality.
Letters from Callaway inform us that
tho spring or well now attracting atten
tion thcro, is situated about fivo miles
from Tortland, on tho Missouri river.
Other strong indications of oil h&vo
bcon discovered on tho farm of Mrs. E.
A. Darncs, in tho samo neighborhood.
Callaway is tho seat of a largo bed of
canncl coal, which was onco actively
worked, and it has long bcon tho opin
ion of good judges that it contains res
ervoirs of petroleum."
Petroleum from tho springs of .tho
Jackson County Petroleum and Mining
Company has been exhibited at Kansas
City by Mr. A. L. Crenshaw, and is
pronounced of lino quality. "Tho ev
idences of its oxistonco," says tho
Journal, "aro abundant, and tho com
pany aro sanguino that thoy havo 'struck
ile,' in a paying loculity. Mr. Cren
Bhaw starts East in a few days to make
tho noocssary nrrangonionto to com-
menco operations. Thcro is no sort of
doubt as to tho oil, and it is but reason
able to prcsurao it is thcro in paying
quantities."
Tho Scdalia Timos of tho 11th inot,
states that a Pctroloum Company has
bcon organized at that place for tho
purposo of boring at tho Mathews
spring. Uu is said to exist their in
'considerable quantities.
It is statod by tho Bethany Union,
that symptons of oil havo bcon discover
ed .in Davis County. Tho Union is
of opinion that oil also exists in Harri
son. County.
TnE Kansas City Journal, of tho 1st
instant, states that capitalists havo -pro
posed to bridgo tho Missouri at that
city, to connoct tho Southern system of
railroads with thoso of tho , North, and
that an cngincor will soon bo there to
mako tho preliminary survoys and esti
mates, and tho work will bo commenced
without delay.
Tho Journal claims, it as at )ast un
derstood that tho Missouri river at Kan
sas City can bo bridged cheaper than at
any p'oint botwoon tho YolloO'stono and
its moutii, ana ados Tins will Rivo a
track withoutr break frbroJChicago to
Fort Scott, and.ult'imatolyio tho Gulf."
