Just as our paper was about to ro

in., a smitten commotion in the streets
jtnliealed that some smidon accident had
liapjiened : and, upon inquiry, we
:tM:ertained that a team ot hordes
ran away, ami that our well known

The circumstances of the occurrence
are brieily these : Air. Charles Dau
)hine the owner of the team above men
tioned, happened to mention in Air.
!M-'ire"s presence that he wanted to sell
he team. ilr. Moore proposed to se
cure a purchaser, and at once ot into
the wajjon and drove down Irom the
voulheast corner of the square to the
flaiety Livery Stable, on Locust street.
There he spoke to some one about buy
ing the team, and after a few words of
flickering turned the horses around and
drove up Locust street a;ain, to show
the movement of the team to the pro
posed purchaser. While doing so. he
struck the horses with a long stick he
had. and they became excited and ran
away.
They dashed furiously up the street,
lie vainly trying to hold them, and liu
:vlly shied oil to the ?rovninr House
sidewalk, where they straddled"1 the
heavy awning posts in front of Arnizeu
& Kase's store, a horse on each side of
the posts. The end of the wagon
tongue struck the first post breaking it
oil" and throwing it to one side. The
stroke also loosened the horses from
their attachment to the wagon; and as ; crimes we have been called upon to re

and others residing in the neighbor
hood, that the dwelling of Dr. Kobert
IJuckhanv in Linden, together with its
entire contents, almost, was destroyed
bv lire at a very early hour on Saturday

On Fridaj afternoon last. Mr. Joseph
May, who lives about four miles eat of
town, met, with an aecident by "which he
hail his rijxht lex horribly mangled. He
tvas engaired in telling' a tree, and as it
started to fall, .Mr. May attempted to re
treat to a place ol safety, but being on a
5iile hill, his leet slipped from under
him and he fell directly tinder the de
scending tree, which caught his right
leg between the knee and ankle and

taken out of tho crushed member, vary

consultation was held, and it was deeid-'
ed to amputate Mr. Mav's limb, which
was done on Tuesday afternoon. The
operation was performed by Drs. IIous-
or and Hardinir, of this place, assisted
by Dr. Hush, of Allenville. We were 1
present and -witnessed the painful oper- 1
ation. Mr. May bore his su H'erings with
a heroic fortitude ; and after his limb ;
was dismembered, conversed freely J

, duced the. eldest daughter, and on the

wa. As the report goes, on the 7th of
this month, when the child was three
'.ays old, it was placed in a basket, ami

sister, procured n team at Calhoun's
stable and went over to Kansas. About
twelve miles west of Vyandotte,a farm
er named Williams saw the buirgy stop

the buggy, ami after getting "in again,
they rode a short distance further" on,
then, turning round, they came back in
tha direction of the city. .The next flay
Williams found the. spot where the bug
gy stopped, and then in a fence corner
found the basket containing the dead
body of the child, which had evidently
fro.en to death.
The matter was reported to the po
lice authorities here.and ollieers at once
set to work on the case, which resulted
in the arrest of Jesse, Saturday night,
the evidence seeming very conclusive
against him. The unfortunate girl,
Frances, was brought to police head
quarters Saturday night, and confessed
the birth ofthechihU and that it had
been taken away. Jesse told her that
lie was taking it to a safe place in Kan
sas where it would be kepi to conceal
her guilt, and her grief was very ago-
