The steam ferry tbat Little Minnie was again lanached last Sunday inorning and at once resumed busi -tess. The Assumption drew the little 'craft into time water with comparative 'ease. The sale of property advertised to be made by the Sheriff this morning, an the suit of Thomas Shoot vs. Ad olpli Wiese, has been enjoined upon the petition of Mrs. Louisa Schwartz, wife of Mr. Wiese. Mr. Jos. Goad ran is having an ad dition built to the lower side of his m residence on St. Patrick street; Mr. t G. W. Mitchell has taken down the b mule shed formerly standing on Cres- c cent Place and rebuilt it alongside '1 his new stable on Railroad Avenue; Mr. T. A. Kingston, the grocer and , sewing machine agent, is putting up a small building on the Avenue, near t Mr. Green's paint shop. Mr. Henry Loeb still remains in charge of the Donaldsonville post .0flice, no appointment having yet been anade to fill the vacancy resulting from I CMr. Fobb's suspension. A Washing ton telegram to the Associated Press announces that all vacancies in South erm post-offices are being held in abeyance by the government, and we presume this accounts for the delay in the case of the Donaldsonville office. The title of Capt. R.,P. Landry to .the Tax Collectorship being now es tablished beyond question, the assess nent rolls and records pertaining to the office have been delivered to him by the Recorder. It now becomes the duty of property holders to re spond to the call for payment of li censes and taxes past due. Until a more suitable place can be secured, the Collector may be found at the law office of Messrs. Duffel & Landry, just back of the Court-House. A marked improvement has been effected in the appearance of Mr. Bernard Lemann's handsome prop erty corner of Houmas and 4ttakapas streets, by the extension and rehabili tation of the grounds surrounding the btgtely residence. Mr. Lemann has acquired, in addition to the corner lot, the one adjoining it on Attakapas street and also the corresponding lot on Houmas street, and is having the whole neatly laid out and planted with shrubbery, shade trees, etc. That enterprising merchant, Mr. G. Feitel, is just in receipt of a large invoice of flour and provisions, which he is disposing of at lowest market rates. All who can do so should lay in a supply of these articles without delay, as prices are steadily advanc ing by reasou of the imminent war in Europe. By purchasing at once a considerable saving may be made, and all who buy from Mr. Feitel can rest assured of receiving the best goods for the money that can be pro cured. Charcoal! Emmett, veterinary surgeon, t( who is making a brief sojourn in this p town. All orders addressed to the a Doctor at Donaldsonville, or left at Mitchell's livery stable will he prompt ly attended to. Messrs. G. F. Neathamer and E. W. Sewell have formed a partnership and are located in Port Barrow, opposite I r Donaldsonville on Bayou Lafourche, d f for the manufacture of cisterns, sugar 1 e coolers, juice boxes, tanks, vats and I every description of work in that line, r t We are assured that both gentlemen f e are experienced workmen and will 1 spare no pains to give satisfaction in I the matter of prices as well as quality of work, to all who patronize them. t e The members of the Police Jury all ~.appeared in town this morning and were on the point of assembling in e special session, for the ostensible pur e pose of essaying a coup d'etat relative to the office of Secretary and Treas urer, but a member unfaverable to the 0 movement sought the advice of the ' Parish Attorney, who decided that no 1- meeting had been cal'Ld as the law n directs and consequently whatever Z business might be transacted would be devoid of legality. Mrs. Louisa Wiese died suddenly of apoplexy at the residence of her h- usband, Mr. Adolphe Wiese, in this e. town, yesterday afternoon at quarter past 4 o'clock. During the forenoon, and while engaged in dressing prle paratoiy to visiting a public office on business of a legal nature, Mirs. Wiese me was seized with an apopleptic stroke, is which resulted in death after a few n- hours of so 'ering. Several physicians it were in am.endance, but their efforts es to save the p..tient's life were unavail a ing. The funeral services will be held ie in the Episcopal Church at 5 o'clock this evening . One the largest funeral piocessions hr we have ever witnessed in this sec- an tion passed through town, from the gr bayou ferry landing to the Catholic of church and cemetery, on Sunday last. "" The decensed was ai much respected to young colored man, scarcely 21 years of age, named Armand Degruise, resi- ti dent of the third ward, from where ha the cortege started. The St. Joseph w' brass band and a field band followed th the hearse, alternately discoursing of mnourufj airs. Many members of H some h49volent society were in the I processf 1, and the neat uniform th dresses f the women presented a th pleasin appearance. in Accii NTAL SnooTING.--At the Peytavin Plantation just below town, Sunday before last, a colored man named arrison Williams was acci- w dentall) shot, receiving a wound that * came very near causing his death. It o1 seems that he was somewhat under n - the influence of liquor, and while in L - that condition took a Deringer from P ' his pocket to show to a little girl from at a neighboring cabin. The child in N * handling the weapon cocked and ac - cidentally discharged it, the ball strik- tI - ing Williams in the left breast, about L A anl inch above the heart, passing e through the left lung and lodging in 0 v the back. The life of the man was for some time despaired of, but under o the treatment of Dr. McGalliard he is doing well and will doubtless recover. P n The entire property of the Donald- f . sonville Agricultural Association - consisting as we said last week, of s the board fence surrounding their race track-was sold at auction on Sunday, f e according to previous notice, and a 5 bid of $180 by Mr. Felix Reynaud was t, the highest offered. The gentlemen a s competing for the purchase of the z it property were evidently in a facetious I Le mood, and to make things lively and t d pleasant for the auctioneer-who was no other than our genial young friend David Israel, Esq.-the bidding was r' started at $6 75 and increased by very easy gradations, until the amount above stated was reaphed, the process at occupying a considerable time. We 1 !v learn that the stoplkholders of the de it funct 4ssoc ation will realize about e- twenty per cent. upon their invest in ment, all debts having been promptly liquidated as fast as they accrued. a If yew are to marry a delicate, pale and sickly lady, make her take Pr. McLean. 314 Chestnut Street, St. Louis, Mo. SHALL WE HAVE A BRIDGE? Proposed Formation of a Stock Company to Bridge Bayou Lafoutrche at Donald sonville-Call for a Meeting of Inter ested Citizens. A movement has been quietly in- to augurated here recently, looking to S the accomplishment of a much needed work of public improvement: the building of a bridge for the accom modation of vehicles and pedestrians, I across the Bayou Lafourche at this point. Last week a gentleman who A feels considerable interest in the mat- c ter prepared the following list of i prominent citizens to be used in the act of incorporation : t B. Lemann. Allen Thomas, - Ed. Bujol, Sr.. Henry McCall, Adlard Landry, Just. Oubre, I)r. Ed. Duffel, E. N. Pugh, E. St. Martin, Henry Loeb, Henry Droege, Jos. Billeisen. d The list was forwarded to Senator 3 e Landry on Sunday, and the following , day he introduced " Senate bill No. .r 163, to incorporate the Donaldsonville d Bridge Company," which was refer red to the committee on corporations, n u favorably reported upon, and finally a 1 passed on Wednesday. Unfortunate n ly however, the end of the session y was so near at hand that considera tion of the bill was not secured in the House of Representatives, and it 11 failed to become a law. While the passage of the measure e would doubtless have imparted some impetus to the bridge movement, its I e failure need in no wise itupele the prosecution of the good work. There e is a general State law which empowers Police Juries and Town Councils to grant to individuals or stock coin paanies the privilege of constructing Id toll bridges, said Juries or Councils to prescribe the tolls. The only draw back to this method is that the priv y liege call not he granted for a longer er period than ten years, but once ob Is taiied and the work begun, it would hr -e a very easy matter to procure the ii, passage of a special act by the Gen Ge eral Assembly at any session, extend ºo ing the charter to such time as might se be desirable. e, An impression has prevailed to " some extent that the ferry privileges ns granted to the late Marx Schonberg ts by act of the General Assembly would i- interfere with the coinistruction of a ld bridge, but such is not the case. It Ak has been decided by the Supreme Court of the United States that a us bridge can not be classed as a ferry, c- and that no ferry charter can be lie granted which prohibits the building lic of a bridge, the latter being deemed a st. work of public improvement entitled ed to precedence over a sinmtple ferry. In order to bring the bridge ques si- tion to a focus, gentlemen concerned ,re have decided to call a meeting ft' those ph who feel interested iii the matter, fixing ed the time at 12 o'clock on Saturday ugi after next, May 12. and the Court of House in this town as the place. he There should be a hearty response to rm this call, and a company formed at a the earliest practicable moment to inaugurate a work that will be of such manifest advantage to our town and .he Iparish. The document we mentioned last week as being circulated here for sig natures containing a caustic refutation p of the reported statement of a promi nent Republican official before the eT Louisiana Commission that the pen- dl ple of this Judicial District did not i acknowledge the authority of the Nicholls governuen t, appeared in the New Orleans press last Sunday, over the signatures of Messrs. Sims, Pugh, Landry, Duffel and others. The paper emphatically asserted that the people of the district recognize only the Nicholls administration and thor oughly repudiate *' the Packard usur pation." The alleged assertion of Judge Maiks-who is the official re ferred to-was denounced as a total ] and wilful misrepresentation. The f publication of the document drew fox th a card of explanation and denial from Judge Marks, the pith of which is contained in the followving extract: 8 The statement attributed, as published, is I a a misrepresentation of the remarks really made by me. These remarks were in truth e and in substance that in my opinion no vio lence would result in the Fourth Judicial District from the recognition of either of the I then contending governments, as the people were law-abiding, and with few exceptions, no politicians. Hearing, last Friday, while at home. that this misrepresentation as now published was in circulation for signature. I , informed the presumed author that the state ment attributed to me was incorrect, giving him at the same time the true version. t - A notable appointment recently e made by Gov. Nicholls is that of Hon. Edward L. Whitney to be Tax Col it lector of the parish of Tensas. Mr. Whitney is a Republican, and repre sented the Teusas District in the State Senate from 1870 to 1874. This selection, taken in common with others of a similar character, indicates 11 that Gov. Nicholls was in earnest , when he declared his intention of be ing the Governor of the people and npt of a party. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Donaldsonville Bridge.
