The town council will meet in regular session next Wednesday evening. C. S. McFarland, of Burnside, was transacting business in Donaldson ville Monday. Hon. H. C. Braud, of Burnside, was a prominent visitor to Donaldsonville on Wednesday. Miss Alice Braud, of Burnside, was the attractive guest of the Misses Bar ton on Thursday. Jim, the Candy Man, has the biggest and finest stock of holiday delicacies to be found in Donaldsonville. A. Bloomenstiel went to Baton Rouge last Saturday to visit rela tives, returning Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Jos. M. Beille, of Port Barrow, is enjoying a visit from her sister, Mrs. P. Edw. Villeminot, of Houma. Miss Laure Poirrer, -f St. James, was pleasantly entertained last week by Miss Jacinta Sobral, of Faubourg la Pipe. Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Sims and their winsome little daughter, Nita, are spending the week-end in New Or leans. Mr. and Mrs. WV. C. Hanson, of Peytavin plantation, spent several days in New Orleans during the cur rent week. Judge H. O. Maher, chief weigher at the New Orleans customhouse, spent Sunday in Donaldsonville as the guest of relatives. Mrs. E. K. Sims and her handsome little sons, Kittredge and Kline, went to New Orleans yesterday and will return this evening. Mrs. Win. Blumenthal and Miss Louise Gaudin were entertained at dinner Wednesday by Mrs. J. E. St. Martin, of upper Ascension. Miss Laure Morvant, of Thibodaux, arrived here this morning on a visit to her friend, Mrs.- Paul Leebe, and will remain a couple of days. Veteran C. Armand Gaudin, of Crevasse Settlement, was in town on business Tuesday and dropped in to shake hands with his friends in this office. Elsewhere in today's Chief will be found the official proceedings of a special meeting of the town council held Thursday night in the mayor's office at the powerhouse. Mrs. Jos. N. Gisclard, of Donald sonville, spent several days at Con vent last week as the guest of her uncle, J. N. Goardain, the capable superintendent of public edtucabtlo in s. James parish. Miss Bessie Sanders left this mor ing for her home at Franklin, after having spent several weeks in Donald ville as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Pugh. The parish school board was sched uled to hold its regular monthly meet ing Wednesday foreuoon, but owing to the absence of a quorum the session went by default. Amelius Williams, 'of Whitecastle, the efficient chief engineer of Hon. James A. Ware's Belle Grove factory in Iberville parish, was in Donaldson ville on business last Monday. For Sale. Miss Lucie Bourgeois, one of the talented young assistant teachers of the Convent graded school, visited Donaldsonville recently as the guest of her sister, Mrs. Atal A. Sarradet. Master Jansen Melancon, the bright young son of Mr. and Mrs. Aramis J. Melancon, returned last Sunday from Plaquemine, where he spent several days as the guest of his grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. Omer Hebert. The contract for furnishing the new high school building has been awarded to the American Seating Co., of Chi cago, Ill., for the sum of $3512.85. Other bidders were C. H. Mrs. Percival Scales and her sturdy little son, Percival, Jr., who have been spending some time in Donald sonville as the guests of Mrs. Scales' iarents, Dr. and Mrs. W. M. Mc Galliard, left Tuesday of last week for their home at San Francisco. Fred. Landry, a valued member of the finance committee of the Louisiana grand lodge, A. O. U. W., spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week in New Orleans attending an important meeting of the officers and committees of that body. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. LeBlanc's baby son was christened at the Catholic church last Sunday afternoon, the name of Winm. J. LeBlanc, Jr., being bestowed upon the hanesome young ster. The sponsors were Miss Lucille Maurin and Sidney J. LeBlanc. The local Methodist congregation is rejoicing over the appointment of Rev. E. P. Craddock as resident minister at this place. Rev. Craddock and his family will make their home in the commodious cottage in Lessard street formerly occupied by M. Goldstein and family. Mohawk Tribe No. 33, I. O. R. M., will hold a regular meeting next Wed nesday at 8 o'clock p. m., at which chiefs for the ensuing term will be se lected and much other business of im portance to the tribe transacted. All gpod Indians are expected to be in attendance. The Nicholls Hotel is headquarters for imported whiskies, brandies, wines and liquors. Prices right. A fine baby boy made his appearance at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Sarradet Friday of last week, and the auspicious event is eliciting corngratu lations galore from the numerous friends of the happy young parents. The Chief takes pleasure in adding a share of felicitations, and wishes the youngster a long and honorable ca reer. The annual election or omcers or as cension Chapter No. 49, R. A. M., took place last night and resulted as follows: John S. Thibaut, E. H. P., R. N. Slator, K.; Rabbi M. Klein, S.; Luclen Meyer, C. H.; Fred. Landry, P. S.; D. B. Showalter, R. A. C.; Jacob Blum, treasurer; R. Henderson, secretary. The new officers will be in stalled at the next meeting of the chapter. Hon. G. B. Reuss, president of the police jury, appointed the following prominent citizens to represent the parish of Ascension at the ceremonies incidental to the presentation of the silver service to the battleship Louisi ana: District Attorney G. A. Gondran, Hon. R. N. Sims, Capt. R. Prosper Landry, Attorney E. N. Pugh and Mayor Chas. Maurin. Capt. V. Maurin returned Wednes day from Washington, D. C., where he attended the Rivers and Harbors Congress held in that city Thursday and Friday of last week. On his way home, Capt. Maurin stopped off at Fincastle, Va., and spent several days there very pleasantly as the guest of his son-in-law and daughter, Judge and Nhrs. Geo. W. Breckenridge. The report of the condition of the Bank of Donaldsonville at the close of business Nov. 30, 1906, which appears elsewhere in today's Chief, shows that reliable old institution to be as pros perous and progressive as ever, and reflects the utmost degree of credit on President W. M. McGalliard, Cashier W. D. Park and the other officials in trusted with the management of the bank's extensive business affairs. Ascension Lodge No. 251, Free and Accepted Masons, met in regular semi monthly session Friday night of last week and elected the following officers to serve for the coming year: R. Hep derson, worshipful master; R. N. Slator, senior warden; Lucien Meyer, junior warden; Jacob Blum, treasurer; J. E. Blum, secretary; Rabbi M. Klein, chaplain; W. S. Cary, tyler. Head-oilColljlssion Between Belated Pas senger Train and Through Freight Train on T. and P. Railroad. Two Men Killed and Two Injured. Shortly after 7:30 o'clock this morn ing a disastrous wreck occurred on the Texas and Pacific Railroad about two miles above Donaldsonville, just this side of McCall station, when the belatedeast-bound passenger train, due here at 5:56 a. m., crashed into a through freight train traveling in the opposite direction. Both engines were completely demolished and. the bag gage and mail cars of the passenger train were smashed, but none of the other coaches left the track and com paratively few of the passengers were hurt. Mail Clerk P. D. Ailen and an unknown negro who was stealing a ride on the passenger train were in stantly killed, being frightfully crushed and mutilated, and Express Messenger Woodsworth and S. S. Teems, colored, the assistant mail clerk, were seriously injured. The engineers and firemen of the two loco motives escaped by jumping before the collision. The dead mail clerk resided in State street, New Orleans, to which city his body was shipped this afternoon. He leaves a wife and two children. Ex press Messenger Woodsworth has his home at Marshall, Texas. His inju ries are internal and may result fa tally. The passengers on the wrecked train were transferred to a special train made up at this place, and which left for New Orleans about 11 o'clock. A temporary track has been constructed around the wreck for the passage of trains pending the clearing away of the debris, and traffic was resumed this afternoon. The railroad officials are making a thorough investigation in order to as certain the cause of the accident and place the blame where it belongs. Miss L. Templet entertained a num ber of her friends very charmingly Friday evening of last week at her at tractive home in Iberville street, which was prettily decorated for the occa sion. At the conclusion of a spirited and interesting series of games of progressive euchre, the first prizes, a box of note paper and a pearl-handled knife, were awarded to Miss Odile Cook and Hiram Proffitt, respectively, while the lone hand prizes were cap tured by Miss Laura Landry and Janvier Hebert. The boobies fell to the lot of Miss Cecile Weber and War ren Richard. Throughout the even ing delicious refreshments were served by the winsome little tea girls, Misses Rita and Rosa Alleman and Livie Carmouche. The following were present: Misses Adrienne, Nancy and Yoland Hymel, Cecile Weber, Bertha Fortier, Odile Cook, Constance Vega, Laura Landry, Mary Flandry, Lodo, Noelie, Lucy and Lydia Templet, and Messrs. Westley and Hiram Proffitt, Janvier Hebert, Henry Dalferes, Henry and Sidney LeBlanc, Hudson Hunley, George Fortier, Warren Richard and Tilden Fornandez. A charming social event of the cur rent week was the progressive euchre given Tuesday evening by Miss Rita Comeaux at her hospitable home in Lessard street. The card tables were arranged in the spacious hall and parlor, which were tastefully dec orated with graceful ferns and a pro fusion. of cut flowers. Lovely prizes were awarded to Misses Docia Tucker, Elodie Templet, Laura Landry and Lillian Aubert, and dainty refresh ments were served in abundance. Miss Comeaux's guests were: Misses Lizzie, Bella,' and Laura Landry, Docia Tucker, Elodie Templet, Laura, Emily, Dometilde and Mary Comeaux, Lil lian Aubert, Bertha Fortier, Maud Harding, Bertha and Julia Landry, Odette and Edna LeBlane and Bertha Plaisance, and Mesdames J. L. Rusca and E. Clements. Mrs. G. A. Gondran was the gra cious hostess of this week's meeting of the Married Woman's Whist Club, which took place Wednesday after noon. The guest prize, a pretty cut glass nappy, was presented to Mrs. H. G. Von Borries, while the club prize, a pair of exquisite cut-glass cruets, was won by Mrs. J. M. Fenlon. A tempting course luncheon was served at the conclusion of the card games. Those present were: Mesdames E. C. Wathen, G. B. Reuss, F. B. Lemann, E. K. Sims, J. M. Fenlon, W. C. Han- t son, H. G. Von Borries, R. N. Sims, Jr., C. L. Sovereign, Geo. H. DeRus sey and G. Donnaud Bentley, and Misses Bessie Sanders and Clare Mc Cormick. Phoenix Fire Company held its regu lar monthly meeting at 8 o'clock p. m. last Monday and transacted a consid erable amount of interesting business. W. G. Wilkinson and Fred. Linde tendered their resign ations as the com pany's representatives on the govern ing board of the local fire department, and R. E. and David Dill were elected to fill the vacancies. The question of withdrawing from the jurisdiction of the fire board and making an inde pendent organization of the company was discussed, 0but definite action thereon was deferred until next meet ing. The Independent Order of Chosen Friends met Tuesday night in post poned semi-monthly session and transacted routine business. The an nual election of officers was deferred until 8 o'clock p. m. next Wednesday, at which time a regular meeting will be held in the hail of Volunteer Hose Company. Every member is requested to be present. After the business requiring attention had been disposed of, the members present repaired to the ante-room and took up the dis cussion of a toothsome spread, and it goes without saying that this feature of the meeting proved particularly satisfactory and enjoyable.
