Misses Mina Moebius and Maud Le doux, of Morganza, were the guests last Monday of Mrs. J. J. Park and her sister, Miss Lizzie Moebius. The Donaldsonville Social Club took possession of its new quarters in the second floor of the Bank of Ascen sion building on Wednesday last. Meadames E. A. Thibodeaux and Gus. Stephenson and little Misses Dorothy May Thibodeaux and Clara Stephenson spent Tuesday at McCall very pleasantly as the guests of W. W. Barron. Dr. D. C. Brumfield's legion of friends will regret to learn that he is prostrated with quite a severe attack of pneumonia at his home in Darrow, and will join The Chief in wishing him an early recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Abe H. Bloomenstiel arrived here last Saturday afternoon from Waco, Texas, where they were married on March 24, and were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. Bloomenstiel until the following day, when they left for Baton Rouge for a few days' stay with relatives before proceeding to their] new home in Greenville, Miss. Thursday, April 15, has been selected as the date for the performance to be given by the Cotton Bud Minstels at the Gondran Theatre for the benefit of the high school auditorium repair fund. A handsome gold ring will be offered as a prize to the young lady disposing of the greatest number of tickets to the entertainment, and there will doubtless be a number of entries in the interesting contest. A number of well-known young gen tlemen of this city met at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. Wolfson on Fri day night of last week for the purpose of discussing plans for the organiza tion of an athletic and gymnastic club. Those present were: Jasmin Tobias, L. lulitz, Abe Samuelson, Dennie Chambers, Charles Rice, Gordon Gis clard, L. Bloch, M. Himmler, M. Schneider, Michael Eikel and Morton Henderson. Miss Adele Blum entertained the Girls' Euchre Club very charmingly last Saturday evening at her lovely home in Chetimaches street. After a number of highly enjoyable games had been played the pretty prizes were awarded as follows: First and second, Misses Linda Dossat and Marjorie Hanson; ladies' guest, Miss Louise Wathen, and gentlemen's guest, E Klotz. At the close of the evening tempting refreshments were served by the gracious hostess, assisted by Miss Nita Sims. A mass meeting of the people of the seventh and eighth wards of Ascension parish will be held at Duplessis to morrow afternoon for the purpose ol discussing the location of the agricul tural school which the parish school board proposes to establish in the New River section within the near fu ture. Music will be furnished by the Gonzales silver cornet band and ad. dresses will be delivered by a number of prominent local speakers. Eddie Vega, the bright young son of Col. A. D. Vega, left Wednesday of last week for Adams, Minn., where he goes to accept a position in the Bank of Adams, of which institution his brother-in-law, William Dean, is pres ident. While sincerely regretting Mr. Vega's departure from Donaldson ville, The Chief unites with his host of friends in this community in wishing him unbounded success and prosperity in his new field of endeavor. Miss Julil Aucoin died at her home in Houmas street at 1:30 o'clock p. m. Wednesday, after a brie[ illness, aged aixty-four years. The funeral took place at 10 o'clock Thursday forenoon, with services and interment in the Plattenville Catholic church and ceme tery. Among other relatives, deceased is survived by three sisters, one of whom is Mrs. Theodule LeBlanc, of this city. The Chief tenders assurances of sincere sympathy to the bereaved family. The Chief joins the many friends of Mr. and Mrs. George Landry in ex tending them hearty congratulations upon the birth of a sweet little daugh ter, who arrived at their home in Les sard street on Thursday morning of last week. The best that can be wished for the diminutive new-comer is that she will grow up to Inherit the graces of mind and person possessed by her charming mother and the many sterl ing qualities and sunny disposition that are characteristic of her genial and popular father. The recently organized Donaldson ville Concert Band will give its first public concert in Louisiana Square on Easter Sunday, April 11, at 5 o'clock p. m. The band has been practicing faithfully for the past several weeks under the leadership of Director Frank K. Sims, and has attained a degree of proficiency which assures it a promi nent place in the front rank of the amateur musical organizations of the state. The forthcoming concert and all subsequent entertainments by the band will be open to the public and everybody is cordially invited to be present. Police Juror Henry L. Wail of the fourth ward of Ascension is earning 1 a right so have his name handed down to posterity by putting the public roads of his bailiwick In good order. The work is being done by prisoners from the parish jail under Mr. Well's personal direction, and no better aa surance need be given to those who know him that the job will be completed o -gift edge style. Arrangements are being made for a grand joint initiation of applicants for membership in the Knights of Colum bus to be held here on Sunday,- April 25, under the auspics of the Ascen sion, Assumption and Laf o u rc b e councils. Ti e ceremonies sill be pre ceded by impressive services at the Catholic church, a feature of which will be a sermon delivered by some visiting prelate of wide reputation. The initiatory ceremonies will take place in the old Catholic church build ing and will occupy practically the entire day. It is expected that some thing like five hundred Knights will be in attendance. IEdward Fernand Laudry, a native of this parish, but for many years past a resident of Whitecastle, died at his home in that town at 11:30 o'clock a. m. Monday, March 29, aged fifty years and three months. His remains were brought to Donald sonville on the 8:47 o'clock T. and P. train Tuesday morning, and after services at the Catholic church were interred in the Landry tomb in the Catholic cemetery. Mr. Landry was a half-brother of L. A. Landry, Sr., of the fourth ward, and a brother of I Misses Blanche and Estelle Landry, of this city. To these and other mem bers of the bere*.ved family the heart felt sympathy of the entire community is respectfully tendered. Henry Richardson, a leading citizen of the St. Am ant section of this parish, and Miss Louise Alexis, an attract ive young woman of Baton Rouge, were married at the residence of Mrs. Rickert in the latter city on Tuesday, March 30, at 3:30 o'clock p. in., Rev. C. F. Sheppard of the Second Metho dist Church officiating. The ceremony was of a quiet and informal nature, only a few intimate friends of the con tracting parties being present. Mr. and Mrs. 'Richardson will make their home at St. Amant, where The Chief hopes they will spend many years in the enjoyment of all the happiness that married life can possibly bestow. A special election was held in the sixth ward of the parish on Tuesday last, the 30th prox., for the purpose of electing a police juror to succeed Rose mond Braud, resigned. There being but one candidate in the field, J. C. Klos of Belle Helene, the election was merely a matter of form, necessitated by the law in order to make it legal, and in consequence a very light vote was cast. The following officials were in charge of the two polling precincts: Belle Relene-Armand Gaudin, Desire Braud and Henry Many, commis sioners; F. Gros, clerk. Geismar Leon Newman, J. An open meeting of the people of the seventh and eighth wards will be held here tomorrow afternoon for the purpose of selecting a site for the agricultural school to be established in- this section by the parish school board. -George Richard, representing H. T. Cottam & Co., of New Orleans, was here Wednesday. Warren LeBlanc and Miss Clara Muller were visitors to Duplessis on Thursday. J. J. L. New Position for Col. C. D. Uondran. Col. C. D. Gupdran, of this parish, who retired from the board of control of the state penitentiary on Wednes day and was succeeded by ex-Sheriff J. T. Young of East Baton Rouge, was the following fay elected general farm manager of the penitentiary properties and immediately entered upon the performance of his new du ties. The position of farm manager was created at a meeting of the board of control, and Mr. Goodran's election thereto retains for the penitentiary systearthe services of an expert sugar planter and unusually cap able business man. It is understood that the posi tion was offered Col. Gondran at the suggestion of ex Governor Heard, chairman of the board, who has all along been very anxious to have Col. Gondran continue as one of the ex ecutive heads of the penitentiary sys tem. Great Council of Louisiana to meet in An anai Session in This City on Mon day and Tuesday. April 12 and 13. The committees appointed by Mo hawk Tribe No. 33, I. 0. R. M., to ar range for the reception and entertain ment of the delegates to the annual convention of the Louisiana great council of Red Men, which Is to be held in this city on Monday and Tuesday, April 12 and 13, are hard at work on their respective assignments and report a gratifying degree of progress in the completion of prepara tions for the notable event. The committee on decorations has ordered fiftean 12-foot banners of ap propriate design, which will be strung across Railroad avenue and Missis sippi street at suitable intervals. In addition, it is proposed to decorate these two thoroughfares from end to end with incandescent lights, flags and bunting, in which undertaking the committee will have the co-operation of the business men and residents of the two streets. Special attention will be paid to the decoration and illumi nation of the wigwam in the Masonic Temple, where the sessions of the council are to be held. The entertainment features will com prise a grand moonlight dance to be given in Louisiana Square on Mon day evening, April 12, at 8:30 p. m,, and an elaborate ba. quet at the Knights of Columbus Hall the ensuing night. On Saturday, Mar&h 27, the sixth grade girls' basketball team and sev eral of the teachers of the local high school were pie santly entertained by M ss Lynda Thomason and her as s;tants, fMlisses Bertha Michel and Ruby Chaney, at the Sacramento school. The party left here on the 11:35 a. m. T. and P. train and on arriving at McCall were met with conveyances furnished by the good people of the community and were driven to the schoolhouse. At about noon the la dies of Sacramento served dinner to their Donaldsonville friends, and, truly, it was a feast greatly enjoyed by the particlpants. `The game was called at 3 o'clock and after hard playing resulted in a score of 10 to 5 in favor of the Don aldsonville "Stars." After the game the visitors were given a hay ride and nothing but the friendliest feelings pervaded the merry crowd. Special credit Is due Miss Thoma son for the delightful manner in which everything transpired, and to her as sistants as well as the ladies for their share in extending the true hospitality of Sacramento. March 81, 1909. The council met in special session, in the mayor's office at the powerhouse, with Mayor Chas. Maurin in the chair ahd the following aldermen present: William Dill and Jas. Von Lotten, first ward; D. Israel, Jr., and B. J. Vega, second ward; J. E. Blum and W. D. Park, third ward. In the absence of Secretary R. Henderson, Mr. Park was designated to act as secretary pro teen. The mayor stated that the meeting had been called to receive the report of the committee ap pointed to confer with the city attorney relative to the matter of extending Iberville, Opelousas and William streets so as to connect the city with the new Lemann addition No. 2. Mr. Israel, chairman of the committee, sub mitted the following report, whieh was read and Donaldsonville. La., March 31, 1909. To the Honorable Mayor and Common Council of Donaldsonville: Gentlemen:--After consulting with our legal adviser regarding the purchase of the property of the, congregation of the Roman Catholic church of the parish of Ascension, to continue the following streets, viz: Iberville, Opelousas and William, to the lower line of the church property, we are advised that the same uan be legally done and paid for as per proposition submitted by Rev. J. M. T. Massardier, repre senting the congregation of the Roman Catholic Church. Your committee, after discussing the matter with parties interested therein, submit the following proposition, viz: That we recom mend the purchase of these rights of way on the conditions made by Rev.
