Labarre's steel-hulled stCeam.bJut, Hustler, Captain Berthelot, has just returned to Grand Bayou, its port of entry, after a run from the Plaquemine locks down the Atchafalaya to Morgan City, from Morgan City along the coast to the mouth of Bayou Lafourche, thence up that stream to Donaldsonville, where she left the steel barge that she had towed all the way from the Plaquemine locks. The barge was built by the Johnson Iron Works for the Atchafalaya and La fourche levee boards. The contract re quired that the boat be built and delivered by Sept. 15, at Donaldsonville. It was first proposed to send the barge by an in land route. On investigation, however, it was found that there was no inland route big enough for the barge, which is 40 feet by 107 feet. Captain Labarre was called on and did the job in fourteen days. On Sept. 23 the Hustler, in charge of F. F. Escoffier, took the barge in tow at the Plaquemine locks. The trip down the Atchafalaya, along the coast to the mouth of the Lafourche and up the La fourche to Donaldsonville, was accom plished in good weather without event, although it was impossible to get a pilot for the twenty-five miles in the open gulf. Game was plentiful and it seemed like a pleasure trip. On the way back, however, it was different. As they came out of the Lafourche the weather was so threatening that instead of sticking to the coast they took Grand Caillou, the deep and winding salt bayou that runs from coast to coast across the southern end of Terrebonne parish. All was calm in there, no matter what hap pened outside. The boat was making good headway running night and day. Hemmed in by impenetrable jungles and swamps and meeting a thousand branch ing bayous, there was nothing for it but the compass. The slightest mistake meant a little steamer with limited sup ply of fuel lost in the swamp. The mis take came at last, when the boat had reached the most tortuous part of the course about midnight. The pilot dis covered that he did not know where he was. For twelve hours the lone little boat battered around the bayous and finally came to a familiar place that they had passed the day before. There they got their bearings and headed for the gulf. They anchored in the mouth of the bayou to wait for daylight. About 11 o'clock a blow came up and they went twenty miles up the bayou for safety. The next morning they got under way and got back to Grand Bayou by way of Oyster Bayou, Oct. 11.-New Orleans Picayune. Cornerstone of Amite High School Laid. The corner-stone of the high school now under construction at Amite City was laid last Saturday by the Masonic Grand Lodge officers of Louisiana, in the presence of 2000 persons. A Masonic parade pro ceeded from the hall to the grounds, and was headed by the Italian Brass Band of Independence. Members of the blue lodge formed an escort for the grand officers, and members of St. Helena Chap ter, Royal Arch Masons, and Knights Tenm plar were in line. School children sang "America," and Rev. H. W. Bowman. of the Methodist Church, offered invocation. Parish Superintendent A. C. Lewis pre sented a silver trowel to Dr. John S. Thibaut, grand master, who performed the ceremony. Other Grand Lodge officers who officiated were: Charles C. Cormier. deputy grand master; Emil Sundbery. grand junior warden; A. G. Ricks, grand treasurer; Richard Lambert, grand secre tary; John W. Armstrong, grand marshal; John Davilla, grand tiler, and Robert R. Reid, past grand master. Brittin B. Purser, master of ceremonies, introduced the speakers, who were Dr. Thibaut, State Superintendent T. H. Harris and Judge Robert R. Reid. A banquet was tendered the Masonic officers and Mr. Harris at the Commercial Hotel Saturday evening. Capt. Bogardus Again Hits the Bull's Eye. This world-famous rifle shot, who holds the championship record of 100 pigeons in 100 consecutive shots, is living at Lincoln, Ill., Recently interviewed, he says: "I suffered a long timewith kidney and bladder trouble and used several well known kidney medicines, all of which gave me no relief until I started taking Foley Kidney Pills. Before I used Foley Kidney Pills I had severe backaches and pains in my kidneys, with suppression and a cloudy voiding. On arising in the morn ing I would get dull headaches. Now I have taken three bottles of Foley Kidney Pills and feel 10f per cent better. I am never bothered with my kidneys or blad der and again feel like my own self." Sold by X-Ray Pharmacy.
