Allan Colomb and Karl Leche are among the college students who are at home for the holidays. Dr. John S. Thibaut visited New Orleans on business during the week, registering at the St. Charles Hotel. Leon Fortier, of New Orleans, is spend ing the Christmas holidays with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Fortier. H. Vernon Sims and Delmayne Hanson, students at the State University in Baton Rouge, are at home for the holidays. Mrs. M. M. Neames and children, of St. James. were the guests of Mrs. L. M. Turner for a few days during the week. Mrs. Alex Poche and Miss Lee Landry went to New Orleans last Saturday morn ing and returned home the same evening. Gautreau, a successful farmer of the Gonzales neighborhood. visited Don aldsonville Thursday on business and complimented The Chief with a pleasant call. Mrs. Fred. Sobral and her little sons left 1 ivriday for Plaquemine, after spending sane time here as the guests of A. M. Sobral and his daughter, Miss Jacinta Sobral. The many friends of Fred. Landry will be glad to learn that he is up and about again, after having been confined to bed for several weeks with a severe attack of illness. J. S. Hebert, a leading merchant and popular citizen of French Settlement, was ji town Monday on business and did not fail to illuminate The Chief office with the light of his genial "phiz." Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Breitling and their sweet little daughter, Florence, and Miss Sophie Amenn spent several days at Bar ton last week as the guests of Prosper Plaisance and Miss Rose Plaisance. Charles Maurin, Jr., the promising young son of Mayor and Mrs. Charles Maurin, who is pursuing a course of studies at Jef ferson College, returned home yesterday Ar the Christmas holidays. Benj. B. Taylor, of Baton Rouge, referee in bankruptcy for the eastern district of Louisiana, was a business visitor to Don aldsonville last Tuesday, being interested in a suit on trial in the local district court. C. N. Gautreau and Juste Guedry, pro gressive farmers and substantial citizens of the seventh ward, were transacting business here Monday and dropped in to exchange greetings with their friends in this office. Mayor Charles Maurin, proprietor of the Famous Blue Store, made each of his em ployees a present of a fine Christmas tur key last Thursday. The mayor remembers is employees in some substantial manner every Yuletide. John T. Many and his stalwart young son, Morris Many, of Bowden plantation, came to town Wednesday on business and found a few minutes' spare time in which to swap handshakes and Christmas greet ings with their friends in this office. Mr. and Mrs W. J. Harrison left Thurs day for Crowley, where they will spend a few days as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. 0. Fremeaux. Before returning to Donald sonville, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison will visit friends in New Orleans for a short while. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Tucker, of New Hope plantation, spent last Saturday in New Orleans. They were accompanied home by their daughter, Miss Docia Tucker, who has just returned from a several weeks' visit to Mr. and Mrs. C. Norman Guice at Summit, Miss. City Electrician E. A. Thibodeaux and Henry A. Steckler, of New Orleans, an electrical inspector employed by the Lou isiana Fire Prevention Bureau, inspected and repaired the local fire alarm system last Thursday, placing it in first-classcon dition throughout. John A. Miller and J. F. Saxon, mem bers of the efficient corps of managers in charge of the Miles Company's. group of places at Burnside, paid a flying visit to Donaldsonville yesterday afternoon and were cordially greeted by their host of friends and acquaintances. Mack Stafford and Rachel James were married at the Donaldsonville courthouse Thursday forenoon, Judge Edmund Maurin officiating. The groom is a son of Robert Stafford and the bride a daughter of A. M. James, well-known residents of the New River section of the parish. Among the grippe victims of the past week was genial "Jimmie" Von Lotten, one of The Chief's publishers and owners, who was laid up for several days with an attack of the prevalent malady. Mr. Von Lotten's many friends will be pleased to hear that he has suf ciently recuper ated to be up and about again. Leslie D. Israel, a bright Donaldsonville boy who is presently located in New Or leans, is spending the holidays here as the guest of his father and sister, David Israel, Sr., and Miss Adele Israel. It gives us pleasure to state that young Mr. Israel has acquired the rank of a qualified as sistant pharmacist, and bids fair to achieve a high degree of success in his chosen line of endeavor. The Chief acknowledges receipt of hand some calendars for the year 1911 from the People's Lumber Yard, 0. A. Folse, proprietor, of this city; 0. S. Broussard, a prominent merchant of Houma; E. C. Pal mer & Co., of New Orleans, and the Staf ford Engraving Company, of Indianapolis, Ind. All of these calendars are very at tractive in design and artistic in work manship, and will grace the wall of any office c r home. The many friends in this community of John W. Tucker, manager of the Miles Company's New Hope plantation in upper Ascension, and James K. Tucker, field marshal of the same company's Armant place in St. James parish, will learn with sincere regret that these estimable gentle men and popular citizens have severed their connection with the Miles Company and will shortly remove to Baton Rouge with their families to take up their perma nent residence. S. J. C. I. Notes. The debating club held its third session last Friday. The question debated was, I"Municipal Ownership." The subject was discussed with the usual warmth and tenacity. The following boys have shown marked improvement in typewriting: O. Terrio, D. C. Mattingly, L. Delatte, M. Leumas, E. Cox, A. LaCour, E. Landry, L. Gaudin. The pupils were dismissed for the holi days Friday afternoon. These holidays will continue till Tuesday, Jan. 3. Tests on the December wor]l will then be held. Teachers' Institutes. The second monthly meeting of the Donaldsonville branch of the Parish Teachers' Association was held on Nov. 12. The opening exercises were conducted by Supt. Rusca, as follows: Song, by association. Prayer and teachers' creed. Roll-call, answered by 23 members. Reading of a story. Teaching of the following rote song: "Here's to the good, and the wise, and the true, They are the friends we love. Here's to the friends, here's to the friends we This exercise was of special interest to all as it gave an example of model open ing exercises for schools. The following program was rendered: "Place of Opening Exercises in the Schools," Miss Bertha Michel. "Singing in Public Schools," Miss Lu cille Hahn. General discussion: (1) Kind of music. (2) How to teach music. "Health and Sanitation," Miss Beatrix Mathieu. General discussion: (1) Ventilation in schools. (2) Fresh air teaching. "How to Study," Miss Estelle Hyman. "Education for Efficiency," Miss Fannie Blackman. "Story Telling in the Schools," Miss Angie Lorio. General discussion: (1) What kind of a stories should be told. (2) How and when they should be told. After the reading of the program and the superintendent's critique, the associa tion adjourned to Dec. 10. when the third t monthly tea zhers' institute convened. The opening exercises were again con ducted by Supt. Rusca and consisted of a song by the association, prayer, roll-call, to which 23 members responded, and the f teaching of the following song: "Hear us, oh Father, when we pray. And hear us thank Thee for the day; For our dear teachers, kind and true And for our work and lessons true. "Help us ýo love Thee as we should, Be to each school-mate kind and good; To every duty faithful be, Our heavenly r riend, we pray to Thee." The association then enjoyed the fol lowing program: "Civics and Health," Miss Jeanne Ro driguez. "Opening Exercises for Primary Grades," illustrated with model exercises by a primary class, Miss Margaret Fairly. General discussions: (1) Morals and manners. (2) Variety in opening exer cises. "How to Study," Miss Nellie Craig. "Letter Writing in the Grades," Mrs. Evalina Bonnett. General discussion of correct letter writing forms. Manual Training in Public Schools," L Martin Curtiss. Exhibition of art work actually done in the various grades in the schools of the parish. "Education for Efficiency," Miss Mae Evans. Both of the meetings were characterized by a live spirit of interest and attention which indicated the sincere earnestness of the teachers in their work. The dis cassions were broad yet pertinentinstruct ive yet not pedantic or theroretical. ani mated and enthusiastic, so that each one who participated in them was conscious of a new impulse toward better teaching, more thorough scholarship and a renewed interest in school work. Special emphasis was laid on dynamic teaching-teaching that will be of practical value for the pu pils when they are grown men-and wo men-and no doubt the result will be as good as the prospects are promising. "Cast Aside," booked to appear at the Gondran Theatre last night, and 'The Girl from Rector's," announced as the at traction for this afternoon and tonight, have either "passed us up" or fallen by the wayside, since neither production has put in an appearance or notified Manager Nolan of a cancellation of its date. The Woods Sisters' big company of fa vorites will hold the boards at the Gon dran tomorrow afternoon and night, pre senting at the matinee "Bud and Mary," a screaming comedy with music, and at night a dramatization of Augusta J. Evans' world-famous novel, "St. Elmo." This engagement promises to prove one of the most successful and popular of the season, since the Woods sisters are pro nounced favorites with local play-goers an aenver failed to attract large au diences on the occasion of their former appearances here.
