New Orleans City Item; 20th inst: Ex-Chief Justice Ludeling is in the city, on his way to Washington, which it is his intention to make Ilis future home and therein practice his profession. Judge L. was appointedChiefJustice of this State by Gov. Warmoth in 186S, and discharged the duties of the high office with signal ability for eight years. He is considered by many members of the bar to be one of the ablest lawyers that ever sat on our Supreme Bench. Juldge Ludeling's Louisiana home is in Ouachita parish, where there is too limited scope for an advocate of his great ability, and for this and some local reasons, he has decided to go totlhe National capital. Thus Louislaiaa loses a distinguished mem ber of the legal profession, a man of un blemished integrity and a worthy and public spirited citizen. His frlendk: in this State wish for him a success in his new home equal, to his merits. They couhl scarcely desire more. Jail Deliyery. Last Sunday night H. B. Porter, a while man, and Mack Sellers, a negro boy, es caped from the jail by cutting a hole through the north end of the building on theground door. It was the custom of thle jailer, Deputy Sheriff Baxter Willis, to lock the prisoners in their cells every night about sundown, but on this particular evening he allowed them to remain in t lie corridor lopger than usual, Porter having been complaining of being sick for several days. Mr. Willis informs us that he called at thejail at his usual time in the evening, found everything alrlght.and proceeded up town, intending to return later and lock his prisoners up in their cells. Shortly after going uptown the rain set In and he did not return until about halt past nine when he found to his consternation that the prisoners had escaped. He immediately summoned assistance and went in pursuit of the fleeing jail birds, catching the incor rigible Mack Sellers at his miothor's house in this city. l ack said that he did not Intend to run away, but on the contrary would have returned next.day, and that he did not give the alarm because he feared violence from Porter. It was thought, and correctly so, that Porter had taken the railroad towards Vicksburg and Mr. Willis secured a hand car and started in pursuit. He learned at Gordon station that Porter had stolen a hand car from the sepetion house near there and the race was begun in earnest. At Girard Porter hired three negroes to propeli his car and fairly dis tanco his pursuers. He reached Delhi about early dawn and there ;left the hand car on the track and took to the woods' Mr. Willis then returned, notifying SherifT Scott of Richland of the escape of Porter, who at once organized a posse and sent them in pursuit. Porter was convicted recently at Rayville for embezzlement and was sentenced to the penitentiary for three years. He took an appeal to the Supreme Court and pending theappeal was brought here and lodged in our jall for safe keeping. He bears a generally bad reputation and will no doubt give the autthoritios nut:h trouble in effecting his recapture. Layton's Addition. The rapid sale of lotarecently in Layton's additou to Monroe Indicates the confidence of the people in the city's future. While some of the lots have undoubtedly been purchased for speculative purposes a great many have been, bought by citizens of Mon roe and other places who intend to build at an early day. A visit to the additton last Woednesday disclosed the fact that a won derful transformation was being effected in the addition and Indicating that the spread of city was tending in that direction. Mossrs. Stone Bro's., the real estate agents representing the cwners of this property, have had the addition beautifully laid out, the streets and avenues being broad and spacious. They are usually 75 feet broad white the older streets of the city are only so to ti0 feet broad. Ouachita Avenue, which is an extension of LS. John street, is 7. feet wide, has a row of live oaks planted in the centre and extends to I'argoud's field, running through tile Layton ileod in the rrear of the residence. Texas Avenue, which will be the longest anld prclt ictst drive in the city, runs due east from tihe river to the track ol the V., S. &I P. Ilairoald and will be 100 feet wide also adiornedl wihl a row of our lovely live oaks down tlLs (.oni tre. Mlssrs.
