S Dear Niaiae: The audience that assembled tho 24th and 25th of Juno to witness the closing exercises of Cedar Bluff High School, was perhaps the largest ever I assembled hero on nuy similar occas j ion. The exercises commenced on Thursday morning with a public ex? amination which was well attend- d by the patrons and friends of tho school in which the pupils of the various classes examined acquitted themselves with credit. Tho arrival in tho afternoon of tho C. V. Band g iv.e promise of additional interest to the future exercisos, and the largo audience gathered undor (ho canvass long before the hour-for opening. The exercises for this evening were opened with prayer by Rev. Mr. Richardson of Jcfforsonvillo, follow? ed by swcot strains of music floating out upon the evening breezes from tho Band. Tho teacher then an? nounced as in order, a contest in elo? cution by Ihe young men of the School. Tbo contestants all spoke well, but Mr. George C. Pecry by bis earnest delivery won the prize iu this class, which was awarded in n few well timed, and nmusing remarks, by I tho editor of the Index amidst cheers I and applause for George. Tho in? tervals between tho orations were : tilled with lively strains by (he Band, and good music by Miss Carrie Spotts and her music class, which added much to the entertainment of tho audience. The literary sermon delivered by i Rev. Mr. Richardson at 10 o'clock on Friday morning to a large and aften- j live audieneo, and to the school, was! an intellectual feast, and was highly appreciated by all who hail tho pleas I uro of hearing it. Tho last evening's I exercises consisted, first of a contest I for a prize iu recitation by a class composed of tho smaller boys and girls of the school, which was award-' ed by Ihe committee to Master Wil? lie Cecil. Second, a contest for a prize U> be given to the best loader I in a class composed of seven young I ladies. Tbo members of this class all read exceedingly well but tbo commit tee decided in favor of Miss Jennie Green of Midway, who carried off tho prize. Tho ovoning's exorcises were interspersed with comic recita? tions, lectures, and good music. Tho exhibition was a pronounced success, and many encomiums havo boon passed upon Prof. Bailey anil bis pupils, Miss Carrie Spotts and her music pupils, Bev. Mr. Richard? son, and tho Clinch Valley Band. It. - .q<^t^ Ex Gov. Cauioron is no Letter friend of Gen. Mahono than Senator Riddlebergor is. Ex Attorney Gen? eral Blair, Col.
