BIG CROP OF PEAS.
Shipments Will Begin ICarlier Than
Was Expectcti,
FREDERK'KSBUUG, VA.. May 12.?
Special.?The shipment of English peas
from the Rappahanno?k Valley to the
Northern markets will begin within the
next few days. The' crop will be a heavy
one, notwithstanding ;tie cool nights and
dry spell. It. G. ?eale and other large
growers in Essex county will probably
begin picking Monday. Shipments will
begin a week or ten days earlier than was
expected, as it was thought the backward
spring would delay the crop.
The Colorado beetle lias made its ap?
pearance in the Irish potato crop in King
George county.
Mr. Horace Fenall and Miss Lucy Allen,
both of King George- county, were mar?
ried Thursday in that county.
Robert Daggs (colored), who died a few
days ago in Stafford county, had reached
a remarkable age, having passed his 110th
birthday.
Mrs. Alice T. Bussels, formerly of Lan?
caster county, but for several years the
proprietress of "The Irvingtnn," Baltimore,
died a few days ago from the effects of a
surgical operation in that city.
DUNCAN LEE THE WINNER.
A Richmond Hoy of Fifteen Years
Gets South Atlantic Po.'s Prize.
As stated 'some weeks ago, the South
Atlantio Life Insurance Company, of this
city, offered a prize of $10 in gold for the
?design of a Carnival booth tp be erected'
on Broad Street, which should most aptly
illustrate the ideas of strength, protec?
tion and home enterprise.
Quite a number of designs were sub?
mitted, but the committee?Hon. J. Tay?
lor Ellyson. Hon. Samuel L. Kelley and
Colonel John S. Harwood, who met yes?
terday afternoon, decided that the clever?
est and most appropriate was that sub?
mitted by Mr. Duncan Lee, aged fifteen,
of No. 6111-- North Fifth Street, this
city.
The booth, in accordance with ?Mr. Lee's
design, has been constructed by the com?
pany, and will be on exhibition at No.
?-03 East Broad Street. The officials de?
cline to divulge the design. Mr. Ellyson
expressed great satisfaction at the taste
and ingenuity exhibited by the many
contestants.
At tho Bijou.
Manager Wells has booked a show for
ntxt week at the Bijou that will be a
feature of. the Carnival.
Horudin!, -who was seen at the Bijou a
few weeks ago, turn'ed out to be the
greatest performer who had been seen
here in vaudeville. His feats were the
talk of tiie city and when he returned to
New York, after the engagement, Mr.
Wolle was frequently asked, "when will
you ihave Houdini again?" Mr. Wells
has secured the -wonder-worker for this
week, and succeeded in doing so after
purchasing his ^time" from a New York
theatre manager. Houdini, is certainly a
wnoderful man. His handcuff secret is
a great piece of magic. The young man
did not fail to escape from a single pair
of Irons that the local policemen locked
on him. and his trunk trick caused every?
body to wonder. Though Houdini is a
?whole show in himself. Manager Wells
bas not secured acts of no consequence
?to ?make up the rest of -the bill. Every
act is a heudliner.
Charles E. Grapewin, supported by Miss
Anna Chance, will .present "Above the
(Limit." one of the best comedy sketches
in vaudeville.
The Elinore Sisters in "Dangerous Mrs.
iDelaney," hardly need an introduction.
The clever comediennes were a hit at the
Bijou early -this season.
The Four Emperors of Music have been
seen here .with the best oninstrel organiza?
tions as a feature act. but as they joined
vaudeville, they have not been South for
a eeasan or more because they have been
kept busy in the northern cities playing at
the best vaudeville houses. This act will
be one of tne features of the bilL
Tho Flood Brothers have a novelty act
?that others have tried to copy but have
never eueceeded. They are originators
of acrobatic novelty.
Grade and Burnett, a specialty, sketch
team, will be seen in their new act and it
is ?aid to be one of the cleverest?
Manager Wells has decided to have mat?
pe?* daily, commencing to-morrow, and
the tuual night performance will be
giv*n ?? 8:15 every night. ; ..

TO THE HOLDERS OF THE SIX PER
CENT. BONDS OF THE COMMON?
WEALTH CLUB. MATURING JUNE
1, 1!)00. ?oS.OOO:
\ The Club has decided to extend its
bonds twenty years.
The Virginia Trust Company will act
for the bondholders, properly stamping
them and attaching the new coupons.
Holders of these bonds, who have
been seen, have readily agreed to the ex
tention; as, however, the bonds are some?
what scattered, theis means is adopted
to notify all holders of the action of the
Club, and the request is made that they
communicate with the undersigned at the
earliest possible date, stating whether
they will extend.
As some of the bonds are known to be
held by estates in liquidation, a. part of
the issue is offered to tlyi public at par
and interest, payable 20 ?per cent, cash,
balance in. two, four, six and eight
months.
The bonds are good beyond peradven
ture, and the coupons are paid regularly,
as not only is the physical security of the
property ample for the principal, but
also the fixed income of the Club far in
excess of the annual interest.
