This barge Is apparently pursued by a
hoodoo. Within the past two years she
has lost iwo captalns and two deck
hands. ln February, 1899, Captain Burg

out tho Capes. Last April his successor,
Captain Weed, inysteriousiy dlsappeared
over the side of his craft as she lay in
harbor here. His body was found three

Dr. Sledd was the pastor in charge of
Fioyd-Street Church during his three
y^ars' pastorate of Maln-Street M. E.
Church here, and until his death over a
year ago.
The new building will be pitched 12 to
1C feet higher than the one now in use,
ani will bc surmounted by a. tower forty
feet h gh. The principal enlargement will
be a Sunday-school annex to the buyding's
:.-:ir, making an increase "f 24x37 feet in
that dlrection. The Sunday-school ar.d
main body of the church will be separated
by a moveable glass parlition. thus mak?
ing allowance for double seati.ig capacity
ef the building.
The work has already begun, and is con
tracted to be complete3 within sixty days.

City and Suburban Railway Company
met last evening and elected Mr. R. P.
Valentine prtsident of the road, and Mr.

vacaney caused by the resignation of
Rlr. A. Rl. Peyton. The railway company
has also purchased the Virginia Ice Plant
and will operate both by the same elee?
tric power. Mr. R. P. Valentine, the new
president, is a live and pushing man; he
was the owner of the first street car line
tho city ever had. Under the new man
agement, many great improvemcnts are
to be made at once at Jefferson Park and
Fry's Springs, making the resort one of
the raou attractive in the State. The
street car line is now doing an extensive
business.

notice of Captain W. C. Geiger, who died
July 3d, of uystntery. after Several wefeks'

4th announeing his death, but on account
of nis brother being a member of Uie
second-class at tho Virginia .Military Insti?
tute, the information was withheld from
tlu public. Tho paper in part says:
"Captain Geiger waa a weM known and
popuiar officer and his death comes as a
.?-hook to all who knew him. His birthpiace
f.i Staunton, Va., and lie ia a graduato of
the Virginia M'ii'itary Institute, class of
"95. He then studied law at the University
of Virginia and practiced a shor; time. Al?
though a man of independent means he
waa possessed of a strong military spirit,
ar.d on Juiy 3th, '%, he enlisted ln the

Santiago campaign and was commissloned
a second dieutehan't in tho Fourteenth In?

SUFFOLK, VA., August 15.?Fire last
night broke out in a clothing store at
"Windsor, a small town on the Weldon and
Powellsvillo Railroad, and burned more
than a dozen houses, some of them small.
There was no adequate means of fighting
the blaze, and despite the strenouous ef?
forts on the part of the citizens the dis?
trict had been swept in two hours. The
lire's origin is unknown. The loss is es?
timated at ten thousand dollar?, and is
partially covered by insurance.
