Seasonable Hints to Fruit Raisers
Careful Handling.
"We rcL'.v.'.imcnd tho following to tne
attention of fruit-raisers:
The way in which li. L. Tell has his
Newtown Vippiii.s ualhered. is one yreat
reason of his sueeo.-:i nnd high profits
in foreign markets. His men leather
tho tipples by means of honked baskets
suspended in the tree; when filled, the
man comes down and carefully places
two at a time in the two hu.-diel
baskets. To pveveht tho possibility of
Iruisin;.', the.-e arc drawn to the fruit
house on a sled by oxen, and two apple?
only arc taken out at a time till ail arc
carefully deposited on the floor. When
barreled, they are drawn on a sled to
the rier, and carried, not rolled, on
board the steamer: when shipicd for
liiuland, one barrel is hoisted at i: time,
nnd eau.olit on a man's shoulder at the
fdiip, and carried by two men and depos
ited in its place. When aain unloaded
the came care is observed, the barrels
heinp; carried otT on a hand-barrow.
Throughout the whole process the same
care is observed as in carrying a look-in-rrlass.
' Tin's is takiuir. too much
tronlde, by all odds," exclaims some
careless person, who would prefer the
decay of his apples,, and the lots of his
net profits in market, to the pnjatly
dreaded '-trouble" of beinii careful.
lie can have his own choice in the
matter; but it is hardly worth while to
plant or raise trees and then throw away
their product.-?.
About Autumn Work in Orchards.
At this senson of the year farmers are
more IVeijuently in their orchards than
at any oilier. .J ud-ing fVoni the replies
made to inquiries as to the condition of
the bark, marks of insect depredations,
etc., we have some occasion to fear that
many regard not the state of the'r trees,
and can cive an account only of the
amount of their produce, even after re
peated visits to their orchards. If
should Leelsewhcre and everywhere
we have found it within the limited cir
cle of our observutian, it w ill be ''('Derail
true that the'.": who give evidence of
having observed and eared for the con
dition of their trees, or have ever taken
any f-pecial pains to put or preserve
tliein in a thrifty state, are themselves
the most thriviti";. industrious and intel
ligent in their several neighborhoods.
,'uieh men will eonerally be found to
among tho not-very-lare cla-s of "very
lucky fellows." at least v.c have
found it.
Now, if the "good luck" of these
thriving men, who look well to their
ways, their crops, their trees, and every
thing else about them, should be con
nected in anyway with their more than
usual watchfulness of the state of their
orchards, or their greater than usual
rains tak'ui!? therewith and ''('ond
luck" is so mysterious a matter that
there is no telling, according to some,
what it is dependent upon (r connected
with than the lesj lucky ones might
easily follow the example of their more
lucky and KOmctimes envied neighbors,
at least in this one respect. They
iniviht easily, certainly, nnd without
much of that "trouble" which so many
of them so rroatly dread and detest,
devote a few minutes, when visiting
their orchards to pick fruit, to observe
whether their trees look healthy
thrifty, or otherwise; whether the
IM ron.L'h or Ftnooth, and whether there
are any signs of the presence or depro
dations of iiijuri niH insects. If the la
r-houhl not look clean, bright, and aB
fhould do, or if there are marks of
ectdepredatoris f.f any kind, then
not yet "in luck" may, perhaps, have
chaii'n of fortune, if they will imitate
the more lucky of their brother-tillers
of the soil, and Bcrape and scrub
wash both in Autumn and Spring, or
one of them at least, those trees whose
bark and outward .".ppearancesi do
look quite right. Let them imitate
example of those who have had "good
luck" with their trees for ten, twenty,
mid even l'uty years, and wash
tree with a lye wade of wood ashes,
pota .-.!;. J.vuu young trees will bear
Jy btniig PuuugU to make an egg
but less Btren-th will Millico to
