Fontir.n Oat. Ono of tlio most
wasteful praetiecs in rejrurd to foiMor, i
tlio present practice of cutting nml feed
ing oats. They arc usually allowed to
f tri ml till ripe, and the stalk yellow, and
tlien cut, threshed, and the straw of Ut
ile; v.-iltn, used fir bedding or litter. If
oatu are cut when a litllo preen, and
then well curcil, tho ftraw n the very
best of fodder, l'eed oat, thus cut and
cured in tho fdionf, to liorseo, and they
will cat tho straw in preference to hay;
and a farmer navoi tho trouble and cx
penic of threshing, and bix oat-straw is
worth iU weight, of the best of bay.
It in far better to bo thus fed to horses
than to feed them shelled oats and hay.
To bo good, however, it should be cut
before unite ripe, and tl en well cured,
so as to prevent must. 15 jr this course,
be loses none of bis oats by sliellintr,
and converts bis straw into the best of
fodder. Ohio Tanner.
Extraordinary Bee Hives.
The inmates of one of our largest
nn-Iown mansion houses, n few davs
since, were surprised to find a large num
ber of bees flying about in two of the
upper rooms. As tho littlo fellows con
tinued to occupy the places, a bee nat
uralist was sent for to investigate the
matter. On entering one of the rooms,
he exclaimed: " i on have honey some
where here," and proceeded to search
for it. On removing the fire-board, he
discovered that ono tlue of the chimney
was lull of lioncy-eomb wliicli was
banging down into the fire-place, and
the honey dropping from it; proceeding
to the top of tho bouse to Found the
chimney, he found the fluo full of tho
comb to the top, and the bees still at
work. In the other room bo found it
to be the same; ono flue of the chimney
was full, and the bees wcro industriously
at work there also.
1 ho flues of the chimney had never
been used; they were plastered smooth
inside; anil were perfectly dark, a stone
having been placed on the top of each
flue. The bees bad descended tho ad
joining flues, and found small bole
.about ten inches from the ton of the
tbininev leading into the closed flues
and through these holei they hav
made their way in and out. They have
as is supposed, occupied these places for
three years, having been kept warm in
the inter by the heat horn the adjoin
inir flues.
On removing the fire-board, the bees
seeing the great light which had broken
in upon thcui, descended to the room
and gathered on the windows, until
they were covered to the thickness of
three inches. It is estimated that there
aro in tho two flues from 40,000 to 50,
000 bees, and from two to three thou
sand pounds of honey. Portland Ad-Tertiscr.
Corn Cooked vs. Uncooked for
Hogs.
Certain recent experiments upon the
cooking of corn fur lings, were tnaJc by
IM r. S?amuei. II. Clay, of Bouibnn,
Ky., tlic dotail.-j and resulta of which
were given to the publie in the Valley
Farmer for lluecmber. The remits of
.Mr. C's experiments, confirmed as they
arc by tnoso of others, show that the
pri tiding of corn into meal and the
cooking of the latter will make oue
bushel of corn produce more pork than
two would do, and nearly as much an
three would, if led wholo and uncooked.
Th? results of Mr. Clay's experiments
.hhow that the number of pounds of
pork for each bushel of corn was as
follow:
When fed in the form of boiled corn U'.j t
cooked meal lb', "
dry corn
They ghownl.so, taking corn at the price
it often bears or comes to in Kentucky,
namely, nt 23 cts. per bush., that tho
expense or cost of each pound of weight
gained was as follows:
On dry corn,
On boiled com.
On cooked meal,
As one-fifth should

be thrown off
to 'o the nett
Knight, the above prices will represent
the cost of making four-fifths of a pound
of pork when corn is 28 cents per bush
el. Estimating nu n nt double the price
named, which would be rather under
than over the average price of corn of
late in any market in the State of New
York, then it is easy to pee that making
pork on Indian corn, fed whole and un
cooked, is an expensive and losing busi
ness, nitico four-fifths of a pound would
coat (J cents, or 1 pound a little over 11
cents. It would ho better economy to
fell the corn, when pork nnd corn bear
cueh prices as they have usually done
of late years, Mnce the corn, without tho
troublo of feeding and slaughtering t'ie
hogs, would bring more thin the pork
which it would make, that in, if fed
whole and uncooked.
Let us tee, then, if these results,
which hhow the common mode of fatten
ing swine to bean expensive and waste
ful one, arc in correspondence with re
c ulU cLtained by others. liy rtfureuco
to sundry records cf similar experi
ments, we find tho highest estimate of
the amount of pork lnado by one bush
ed of corn uncooked is about 8 lbs., bus
costing about U cfs. per lb. when corn
is HO cts. per bushel.
According to the experiment of Col
nian, l'liiiincy aud llolbrook, cooked
coi n meal, or cob and corn meal will
yield from 15 to 19 lbs cf pork for
each bushel of corn thus consumed.
As tlio truulih: of cooking food for
swine is tho chief reason why the prac
tice enforced by the results ubovo named
