BRUSHCREEK TP. October, 1869. ' Ma. Editor: Being a reader of your p ft per, and very tnucb intorcstcd in Iho Agricultural Department, ironi)tcd me to give you my exper ience in the selection of Seed Corn If it lias not beeD done already, ee loot lue largest, ripest ana rao6t per fect ears at once. In hubkifJg, braid (lie chosen ears together, and ban them upon a polo or rope in some dry and airy place, whero they will get seasoned through, cob and all. It the mistake of some to throw tbeir corn at hesking time into a heap or a Lin, leaving it there a long time be fore selecting their seed for the next year. Theconscquence often that partial fermentation sets in, arid the germ of the seed is 60 much injured that it fails to grow when planted and then tho blame is thrown upon Providence, or- the worms, or the crows. Corn which hae been so heat ed will answer tolerably well for grinding, but for planting it is a very BRUSHCREEK TP. October, 1869. A. J. B. Save the Suds. Lhe .Massachusetts farmer, in an articlo on "soap suds," says that the value of this article as a stimulant of vegetable life, cannot be too highly ap preciated, it contains, it says, the aliment of plants in a state of ready solution, and when applied, acts not only, with immediate and obvious ef loct, out .wiin a sustained energj' vvhi'tli pertains to tew even of the most concentrated manures. When it is not convenient to apply it in irriga tion, the most economical method, perhaps, of using it the article goes on to say it should be absorbed by some materials which may be used as an ingredient in the compost heap. Sods, muck and other similar articles should bo deposited where the suds from the sink and laundry may find its way to them and be absorbed tor the benefit of crcps. In this way several loads of manure, very suitable for the support and sustenance of any crop, ina3- be made at comparatively small expense. The highly putrescent character of this fermentable liquid qualifies it admirably for the irriga tion of compost heaps of whatever material composed. Being a potent fertilizer, it must of necessity impart additional richness to almost any ma tonal to which it may be added. The article concludes with an appeal to all fanners and gardeners to "try, and mark the lesults." Ex. Reclaiming Harsh Soil. Fome soil is hard clay bound arid will crack. Such soil requires sand. But as sand is too expensive Ut apply, other means will have to be resorted to. One of these (and the foremost) is, to plow in the fall or early winter plow dry. The elements are the best ameliorators. At the same time lime may be applied to advantage. Next in order, and of great conse quence, is cropping the land with cer tain kinds of grain, &c. Peas will nellow the soil. So will buckwheat. And so will clover. These can all be applied without any difficulty, not be ing hoed crops that require fine til lage. -A stiff soil turned up in the fall and well limed, the lime harrowed in, fol lowed by a crop of peas and sown in the fall to clover, will, when the sward, a few years thereafter, is turned down, 6how an improvement that amounts lo a complete change. The land is in a fair workable order, and needs but manure and plowing when dry enough and usually in the fall, to keep it in good condition. Of all things a clay soil is the ino'st critical to man age. Calmon's Rural World. a A Curious Case. Jn Hoss counlj', a horee belongiprr tn Win. Cnibb, was observed to take It is feed in his momh, and after chew ing it a very short time drop it out on tho ground, apparently failing to swallow any whatever. This contin ued about (oar days, mhen a veterin ary 6urgeon ordored tho mouth of the horse to be held open by artificial means and pills put down into the very throat of tha animal, so that be would be forced to swallow them. This was done, when it was discovered that immediafelj behind the buck teeth was firmly lodged a corn cob about three inches in length, which, crosswise, held the tongue firmly down. This was removed with -ome effort, and the horse took to his oats with renewed vigor. 4 It TH Keeping Sweet Potatoes. A writer iu the Country Gentleman says : "I have s?en several plans tried for keeping sweet potatoes, such as put ting them up in dry sand, chaff, etc.; but I have found that rotten wood, finely pulverized, is the best thing yet. Collect the rotten wood in the sum nor or early fall ; get it perfectly dry ; grind or pound it fine; pack your sweet potatoes in it in boxes or bar rel and keep them in a warm room nr in the cellar close up to the floor of the house, and you need have no fear but that your potatoes will be as good in the spring as when you packed them away. Hood Calf. Mr. Lugee, of Olive, killed a six-week old calf that weighed 234 pounds, and cleaned not quite 117 pounds. The mother of the calf was a two year old heifer a cross between the English and Broad-IIorn Durham stock. Noble Co. llepublican. The Canadian farmers are forming peed clubs one or more members be ing selected to raise seeds for the rest. The club furnishes the money to meet the expense. The California Farmer states that the Cashmere goat is receiving in creased attention in that State. Pur ties are mentioned who have flocks ranging from 200 to 1,000, grades in eluded.
