Punctuality.
It is such a nice thing to be a
business man in this settlement
System, punctuality. On time, or
up you go like an illustrated phan
tom; ' 1 lost fifty thousand dollars
day belore yesterday, because my
watch was one-eighth of a second
slow; that much behind an ap
pointment. Brought suit against
the w atch-maker to recover dam
ages, so the Ions is but temporary.
I go by clock-work ; nm wound up
at night, run down (town) in the
morning; run all day; rise at one
minute past six; the bell rings six
strokes. A new servant
girl this morning gave seven rings ;
was a fourth of a second too late
lor breakfast. Come down without
breakfast. Ordinarily rise at one
minute past six; eleven minuteB
three seconds for toilet purposes ;
ten seconds to come down stairs ;
use four seconds to inquire how
everybody is; read the papeis
nineteen seconds ; look out of the
window one second; devote two
seconds to grace, five seconds to
toast, ten seconds to the contest
with pancakes', four seconds to cof
fee, six seconds to chops, one sec
ond to 'thanks, two seconds to
'slinging the napkin into its ring,
and breakfast ifl over. Then I
practice gymnastics five minutes;
Kometinu1!) 1 wrestle with a pound
of mavkctbutter gain strength
faster this way than by dumb-bells.
I spend six seconds kissing my wife
excellent lunch, you kiiow ; bet
ter than quail on toast. Step into
my carriage at twenty-seven min
utes nud forty-nine seconds past
nine ; reach the office at fifty nine
minutes and throe-fourths of a
second ast ten. Takes ninety
seven minutes and seven seconds
to drive from res. to my biz. I'm
just old punctuality. Open letters
from twelve to one ; answer letters
from one to two ; have a lunch
brought iu at four seconds past
two ; leave the office at three o'
clock and" Pine seconds. Dis
charged my cashier last week, be
ing a Quarter second . behind .time
one morning'; he fell at tho door
or or mignt nave maue u unie is
time. I now do all by clock-work.
Taken out my brains' and put in a
cylinder escapement, lepine lever,
full, jeweled,, thirteen holes, plug
gea fox diamonds. Shall Hake out
my Vitals, and put in their place
old-fashioned pendulums-. - Shall
put- second-hand minute-hauds on
my .raanly'boBom, and run on time
altogether'.- Then I shall; study a
railroad guide nd a dictionary,
and "give entertainments--repeat
thej-above process from memory,
and.call it business Persons wish
ing to see me on businesspoli
ticians, doct6rs,8weethearts,ager.ts,
bankers, sheriffs, lawyers, under
takers, mourners, legatees will

strict business system is now in or
der. So strict, that if a man lives
a second longer than his' time, he
can't die. . But time is .

A Good Take-off A Love'Sto
ki The Hartford Times i3 the lit
erary constructor of this brief and
festive story. " We will have an
other chapter of it when Admiral
Goldsboro reaches Washington
with the heroes : ' S '.-'.:
A French Canuck, of a Monsieur
Crapaud, (genuine;) a soldier, a
patriot, or a humbug, gives evi
dence with regard to Surratt.' He
and Surratt pitched upon the same
girl possibly a tall vivandiere,
with bloomer dress and a dirty
neck and both went red-hot in
love, with the wayward sister.
Surratt ran away and joined the
Papal Zouaves in Italy, to escape
hanging. But he might come back
some day,' and fasten again, fresh
and ardent, upon the affections of
the " bold sogef gal." Bo the Ca
nuck has " blowed " upon Surratt,
and told ' where he was, 'cutting
across Boutwell's story that Sew
ard and the President knew about
it previously. ' The- Canuck also
goes a great way further, and in
his jealousy, with eyes as green as
squash, he declares that Davis and
his Cabinet planned the murder of
President Lincoln, and used Sur
ratt as a convenient-tool. All this
out of the love of a . single girl.
Isn't this an age of humbug, cred
ulity, as well as of destruction of
the Union ? Old Thad., fresh from
gambling-hells almost every morn
ing, and' calling himself a u con
queror " of rebels, is rampant, cer
tain. "
a: Ore ;of the women speakers at
the Equal Rights' meeting in New
York, was so pretty, that the pub
lie seemed inclined to give" her any
right she chose: to ask. . Some of
the more .antiquated ladies styled
her Ma forward minx," though she
blushed 'cbattainglyiwnile: speak
