Darst was arrested and gave bail for his appearance belore 'Squire Black cn January 3d, the pre liminary trial being continued until that time, on account o!' the injuries ot both parties. By Ihe Court proceedings in the Fort Scott Monitor we see that in the absence ol the regulnr Judge, lion. Cyrua O. French, formerly of McArthur, was elected '0 tern. Judge for the term. Mr. French has built himself a good practice in his new home, and what is better, a fine reputation. A son ol Mr. Edward Swep lion, who lives west of town, killed a lare spotted snakn, one day last week, which measured lour feet, two inches long nnd five ad a quarter in ches in circumference, lie d.tl not know what kind of a snake it was, but it made a vigorous fight lor its lile, and was sup posed lo be of a yey poisonous variety. Daxul PmBY, who lived near Byer's Station was struck by Ihe engine of the St L'Hii Express going west, last Satur day, and killed. The engineer saw him and sounded the wliisile, but it is supposed he did not hear it, as he was h arrl of hearing and paid no atten tion to the signal. It was im pos-itile to check the tram in time to save his life. Allen to appoint him State Librarian. The Judge is a most excellent man, a type ol the old sch ol gentleman, possessed of the knowledge and courtesy to make a most popular Librarian. We presume Governor Allen will not reappoint the present Librarian on account ot his politics, and if so, a bettermaa lor the place than Judge Mayo could not b found. Swift, ol Chilticothe, is the prince ol toy-men. It there is any thing new in that line in the East that is especially good or desirable, Swift is sure to in troduce it in this section about a year or two in advance li his neighbors, which tacts gives his store a fresh and or iganal appearance, especially at the holiday season, lie has been knocking down ihe prices, as will be seen by his adver tisement. Mail Snatchers. Reader, did you ever see that long iron crane of an ar rangement sticking out of the side of a mail car? That's a mail snatcher. It's the only thing ever invented that is meaner than ihe man that bor rows your paper before you read it yourself and never re turns it. It's a big thing though! we know it is, tor we saw it il lustnled in Harper's Weekly. The one in Harper's Weekly caught the mail sack every lime. It's ju3t like the one on the mail train on the M. & C. Ii R. only the latter punches the sacks oil in the mud. The mail going west is carried on the St. Louis Express, which goes by McAr'Jiur like a streak of lightning. The agent throws oil' the sack (or thin point, and punches the one he should take up over into Ihe mud with his snatcher. He didn't punch it fair one day, the sack got tangled up in the snatcher, broke it of and both went into the mud. The agent didn't lack much of being with them. There was only one thing prevented; he wasn't repaid, and it would have been a violation of Ihe rules oT the department lor Ihe snatcher lo have carried him. But lln'8 snatcher is a great ar rangment, und expedites Ihe transmission of mail wonder fully. Ii any of nur re-ders west ot this point bhould get this paper by Ihe middle of next January they will under stand that they are under obli gations to the snatcher foriis delivery. Seriously though, while these snatcliers tire a convenience ami cdmit of the mails being carried on last trains, by ta king up th" small letter mails at way stations, they have proved a first class nuisance bo far as McArthur is concerned The mail is too large for the snatcher, and it is qui' e as like ly to punch it in the mud as it. is to get it, which proves a great inconvenience to all per sons who do business at or with this poin', as well us to the pa' roils ol the three papers published here. Except Chil licolhe, McArthur probably sends out die largest, amount of mail matter of any town ( u ihe main line between Mariet ia and Ciucinn t'i, an 1 Iho mad tn in -hould Vp here so that he mnls could be taken cn with regularity. Mail Snatchers. All for Truth. J.N, the immortal philoso pher, sage and advocate ol Until, was here la-t Thmsdiy, but did not lilt the veil, p irl y on accoui t of the inch m nt weather and pari y beiau-e He Kecord was derelict in duty, nnd failed lo announce in beQiting terms the proposed advent of the philosopher. He called on us and beseeched us to "martyr wi h htm in the dungeon ce V Without a heroism in the cause of truth which the prevailing trait of the philosopher, but clinging rather to u co forts ol home, we declin '. Nolwilhstan ing J. N.'s disappointment in neith er "martyring"' o f he veil," he was so well plea3ed with his visit to McArth i- that he has written us a letter in forming us that he will posi tively be here on Friday, Jan.. 2d, 1874, and address our peo ple on his own living and true theory of pacification, that both the North and South were right from their respec tive standpoints. Then sj r- ad the word among the people, that they may hear, and this champion of truth may crush out prejudice in our midst. Pay vour debts now. Did it ever occur to you that what id a small matter to you who have plenty might be the means of saving some good fellow from actual suffering? If you pay your little debts now, you will sleep better - these long wiuter nights. Who will take the purse for capturing the largest number oi rat scalps next week. Sheriff Georok Kalkr in forms us that instead ot there being great damage and loss of window lights in the Court House during the hte wind storm, as' reported in the En quirt r, there was but three lights broken by slamming of shutters, and the slamming was done by the front shutters, wue.'e fastenings have never been provided. The Sheriff notified Ihe Commissioners ol the condition oi these shut ters and the spouting when he first assumed his of fice, so if the Enquirer's rest has been disturbed it will please remember tint its own Commissioners are responsible lor the hammering and banging of shut Uts on windy nights We understand, however, after three year's delay, many bro ken windows and damage by broken spouting, they have con tracted to have the shutter fastenings and spouting re paired. Sisson has a doll about the size of a four year old child which 13 the wonder and ad miration of all the little folks lie was lorced to take it out ol his Iron t window to keep the little ones from breaking the glass, climbing up to meaure themselves by it to 6ee which was the largest. Take the chil dren to see it and the other toys, and you will uoon find out what they want Old Kris, to bring them At the first annual communi cation ol the Zaleski Lodge, No. 427, F. and A. II, held December 31, 1873, the follow ing officers were elected for the ensuing year: Ruben Tiiompson; W. M.; J. A IVz, S. W ; T. E. Knauss, J. W.; J. 1J.
