nlr.Eij waa editor and publiah
tr of the 8cigto Qaeetta before
vert born, the Gazette wta
the first, newspaper we bare
any recollection ol seeing, and
for years it preached the good
old Whig f oapel to the family,
where it waa a constant and
welcome visitor.'
For a long- time daring Mr.
Elf's administration of the Ga
zette it -waa about the only
newspaper worthy of tbe name
10 thia aeotion of the State. It
consequently had jarge pat
rooage la what ia now Vinton
county and Mr. E. ia personally
known to many of our citizens,
and what is better for us un
der the circumstances is that
he is acquainted to considera
ble extent with our mineral
resource, although many valu
able discoveries have been
made since he has been famili
ar with the country.' We are
glad to have hiin back among
us, ai it were, for he is an in
dustrioua editor in furthering
all worthy poblio enterprises,
nd aa such he will no doubt
make hlmsell especially usetul
with the opportunities now
presented.
Fires.
The residence of Mrs. John
Bobbins, llamden, was destroy
ed by fire last 8unday.
The residence of Lewi Lu
ess, who lives about three
miles below llamden, together
with hit smoke house, stable
nd all' out-buildings except
one barn were destroyed by fire
on Saturday.
On tbe same day a fire broke
out in a coaling belonging to
Eagle Furnace, burning from
5,000 to 8,000 cords of wood.
Hope Furnace loit about 1,000
corda of wood in the same man
ner.
Too much oare can not be
exercised with fires during this
dry season when tbe least spark
will serve to start an uncon
trollable fire.
Off tbe new subscription list
of stock to the G., McA. & 0,
K. R. we notice that Oilman.
Vltxd & Co. are down for $500
to bd paid in work. It seems
to us that every former, team
ter, or laboring man along the
line of tbe road could put
down aometning to be paid in
work, and tbe company would
as leave have work as money.
If those who do not feel able
to anbscribe in cash would
help along in that way it would
be a good lift to tbe road, and
in tbe end would pay them
well ior their time.
