way we have first a competent sgent, or at

for business i secondly a corps, of laborerf
wno can worK at the time the repairs are
needed, who can repair the damage by
freshets or heavy showers in summer, and at
once break 'out the snow" paths fn J winter.
A little work in filling' a hole, in turning
water from k road that has beeo washed out,
may save ten times tbe labor, it . costs, and
the seasonable removal of round, loose stones
from the surface, or digging out fast stones
from the path, may save many an accident
and the constant discomfort of travellers. :
DRAINING OF ROADS.
to maafe'a permanenAly good roaob on ev.wet
louDdatiou.. JUacAdam, tho inventor of mao
adamized roads, used to say that he cared
not what material was the fnnndatfon of R
road, ' provided it was dry1;!' The great fault
of road making is the want of drainage at the
bopom.,,.ia&e alight caes: aoa nil it with
any earth, &and,'clay; loam, or even gravel,
then bout in as rriucn water as it will hold ;
then taka a-weoden rammer and attempt to
beat tue ins s solid, ana tne more you beat
it, the softer it becomes ;. you would not exj
pect to make a hard shell on the top, by
such mean. So it is with a Toad, thronph
a swampy or springy place : the water is at
tbe bottom, and by attraction works up and
keeps, the surface wet, and no amount of
gravel or of rolling can form a hard track
above it.'' It iS not the 'water ' which falls
directly upon the road that does the greatest
harm, for this . may .be easily disposed, of,
although with a wet foundation, the rain
increases tbe dirhcuity, there being no pass
ive for it downward, as there is. in a soil
vbich is underdrained. , , j :
Farmers who have practiced thorough drain
age in their fields or meadows,' will at once
understand this matter. They know how a
libe or two of tiles four feet deep,' through 'a
shaking! bog. or.aloDga springy hillside, will
change s spot over which no beast could paw
into a sou compact enougn mat loaas oi nay
or even'of manure, may cross it safely. Dry
and is good foundation for a road or for ia
building ; clay a ranted ot its moisture lorros
a hard subsoil, but cracks and open tuffi-1
ciently by drainage, 1q allow, water to pass
through it, and even swamp mud or peat well
drained to the depth of four feet would snt-
porx tne;grav Tjr tjiner. material necessary
ta town a gooa country mgnway. ji me
reader, will call to mind the places on. the
roads in his own neighborhood which have
been most expensive to repair, and are still
in the worst condition for travel, he will be
satisfied that wo .aaa correct when we say
that tha sne) thmgeedftrl to the good repair
of. our common highways, ts nnderdrainage.
MODE OF DRAINAGE.
Any one who knows how to drain a field
or meadow, knows now to drain a highway
1 lies have not been long in common use in
this country, but their use is now understood
by most farm era.' Asa general thing,.. tiles.
tour feet deep, properly laid, two rods apart,
will drain any soil, though on very close clay
they are laid nearer, The pathway of a road
is box usually snore thm twotyor twenty
two feet wide, and a line bf drains parallel
with the road on each side of it, will almost
certainly draw off all water that can betaken
from the soil by- drainage, and tbe rest what
is'held, by'capillary :aUractionkwill do no
barm.;.... ., , ...
Many seem to imagine' that although these
little tiles of two or three inch bore, ToSy
drain afield well enough, some great process,
mom expensive and imposing is necessary to
drain a public highway.. 6o they dig: a
trench four feet wide and four feet deep, in
the middle of the road, snd lay ' costly
culvert of flat atones and cart in hundreds of
loads of loose stones, and build their road
oath on the top of it, when a single line of
three men tiles laid in place ot tne culvert,
arid one-tenth of the cost would answer the
purpose far letr. We say better, because,
although the culvert may drain as well as
the tiles, while kept open, it is far more liable
to be filled op and obstructed than is a tile
drain, because Ahe htter is laid tighter and
cannot be entered by the various vermin
which work ruin to stone drains.
We have in our treatise oa Farm drainage
set forth fully our views on these points, and
they are applicable alike for tbe most part to
highways as .well aa farms. The common
$,,0 attempting to remedy wetness in
roads, by carting gravel ana sand upon tne
surface, is only successful when the road is
so far raised above the common level that it
is thus drained at the foundation. Now a
tile drain may be laid in tbe best manner,
anywhere almost, for fifty cents to a dollar a
rod, and the cost of carting on material to
raise the road bed even two feet would be
ten or twenty times as much. ,
We know of tracts of road in villages, that
have been raised, and rounded up to the in
convenience of every body, to get rid of wet
places, when a tebth of the expense laid out
in drainage, would have left them level and
dry, and convenient. Mass. Ploughman.) ''
Widz-Tibk Wagons. The advantage of
wide-tire wagons is not sufficiently appre
ciated. ' Every farmer who has tried one up
on sandy roads or fields speaks highly in
their favor ; and they are equally valuable
upon soft sou when it is wet, like muck up
on the great prairies, where the felloes cut
tbrojugh the sod, and sink half a foot below
tbe surface. U pon some meadows, wheels
with four-inch tire run freely, while those of
the ordinary-width of one and three fourths
inches esn not be used at all. Upon more
than half the lands aad roads of the United
States a wide-tire wsgon will run easier;
heavily loaded, with two horses, than a nar
row tire will with three. It is, then, a saving
of fifty per cent Some turnpike eompanies
allow wide-tire wagons to pass for half toll,
and, as a matter of public economy, every
road district could afford to pay a premium
to have all burden wagons made with tires
four inches wide.'
