It is n horrible transaction:
Letters were received here last week from '
Hyde, Tyrell, and Beaufort counties, ft.iting that ,
Washington Carroway, a citizen of Hyde county ,

prencher, lately, on some frivolous pretext, knock

large stick and continued to beat her, until a man
named I.iriter, who was boarding in the house,
interfered to prevent her being murdered. Where
upon Carroway took his hjii to shoot Lassiter;
but he disarmed l.im and left the house.
A few days afterwards, Inssiter chanced to go

from the country, and eluded pursuit. He had been

Wudcsboro' Argus writes from the Deep creek,
Yadkin county, N. C:
Having seen a notice going the rounds of the
papers, concerning a cat suckling a rat, I thought
it might interest your readers to know that there
is.il anything, n more curious case of foster mo
thers up in this neighborhood. One of my neigh
bors has a cat and four kittens. Some of the
children of the family found a squirrel's nest. In
it were two young ones. These thry carried to
pussy, for the pnrpoe of feeding her offspring. In
btead of applying them to this purpose, her cat
bhip following the example of Pharoah's daugh
ter in the case of Moses concluded to bring the
young squirrels up as her own. They are now
all living together, cat, kittens and squirrels, a
happy family. The cat takes as good Care of her
bjhhy-tailed charge tis the does of her feline
progeny, carrying them in her mouth when they

now" more than half grown, very gentle, and seem
to possess-none of the propensity of those playful
little creatures for biting and nibbling thirgs. In
fact, they seem to be perfect kittens in principles,
even to the eating of fish and raw meat ! The cat
brings rats and mice for the benefit of her house
hold; but it is not yet ascertained whether the
squirrels have learned to cat them; but cctUin it
is, they cat raw bc'ef !

To jiersons who contemplate engaging in the Cotton busi

to he met with. The same amount of machinery could not
now bu supplied by manufacturers in less than tweltc

I would s ubsctbe a large amount of the purtluse money

here without requiring uiy personal attention.
The projierty, from its c mvenience for procuring materi
