themselves that privilcse. btfore goiug into busi
ness, that the law rauft be complied with in such
cases before the 25th inst. otherwise it will have
to bo enforced. This warning is given in obedience
to instruction from the proper quarters. The
financial condition of tho Corporation at this
timo requires all the means it can command in
that way to meet engagements that aro pressing
hourly upon it. The demand, although unpleas
ant, is nevertheless imperative., and it is hoped
will prevent tho a earning ot cost by tho continud
neelect of delinquents.
Every merchant when applying for a yoarly li
cense is required by law to execute a boad in the
penal sum of one-thousand dollars conditioned
that he will render to the Recorder at tho expira
tion of bis license, n tvorn statement of the invoic
co-t ff all Me poodt brought into hit ettablithmenl,
either front home r abroad, for tale teithin thetaid
twelve month, and pay -a tax' upon the surplus at
the rato of two mills on the dollar, after deduct
ing the amount paid in advance. This statement
as sworn to booaraos a part of a. report made
monthly to tfie City Council, to enablo them in
tho" assessment of taxes, to either diminish or in
crease the amc as the wants or the Corporation
may require. The owners of taxable vehicles of
every description arc also requested not to delay
any -longer their duty in this matter. This invita
tion is. intended to bo general, and it is hoped
that any other differing from this will not have
