On pre- Fentinn the cane, Aliss .Murray f aid : Hon. Emerson Etheride I have been appointed by the managers ol tlie rair held by the St. Mary's Orphan Associa . . . . -.1.1? T . . lion lo present you wun inia cane, it is the gift of yonr fellow-citizens of the capi- tol city of Tennef-see, who are the true friends of the grand old republic which tve cherish with such fond recollection, but which is fast disappearing beneath the oft repeated blown of an unrighteous despot ism. It ii a pledge of what the nnble cit izens of Nashville will do on the great day which is to decide whether lennes seana are to be freemen or slaves. Accept it as an omen of the better days in store for down-trodden Tennessean", when the voice of an indignant people will be beard throughout the Length and breadth of our dear old btate. 1 he banner of the consti tution has been unfurled to the bieeze; you are our standard bearer; in you our hopes are cast: and while you are instructing the sons of Tennessee in the highest duties of freemen, the daughters of the Rock City will pour forth their earnest, heartfelt prayers for the success of the only man who can now raise the State of Tennessee from her present humiliation. Mr. Ethendge replied as follows : Miss Murray: For many years my life has been all anxietv and care, chielir because public duties have been assigned me by too partial and con fid ing friends. Rut it has often happened that the greatest responsibilities, the severest trials, were lessened by kind acts and approving words, which this occasion forcibly recall s. In no struggle ol my lue nave l ever lelt so much responsibility as now; yet at no period have 1 been cheered bvapproval more gratifying tlian that which is implied by your kind words, and the lovely presence in which I stand. To plead for public liberty is enough to arouse the noblest attributes of mind and heart : the encouragement of woman sufli cient to make tranquil the days in which ambition will be felt no more. The beau tiful gift will be preserved as a sacred thing ; this occasion cherished among those to which memory will ever fondly cling. Alter the presentation. Air. lUherult'e was introduced to the ladies present, and spent some moments in pleasant conversa tion with them. It was evident that m his earnest labors for the cause of law and order he has the smiles and prayers of his fair countrywomen. A certain divorce suit, the names of the parties to which must for the nonce remain unwritten and unsung, was to have been tried in the Circuit Court on Friday last. Everything conducive to the speedy termi nation of the process of severance seemed progressing as well as could be desired by the most lelligerent couple that ever saw broomsticks moving or listened to the bub bling of overheated water on a waahing day. The dignified attorney had dispatched a note to his client, the cnarming better half who had sought freedom from house hold carea by appealing to the law, and she was to have been at his office sometime during the afternoon. Hoon after the sending of the message a hack drove up to the corner of Cedarstreet and the Square, and the lovely client alighted, but did not proceed to her lawyer. Jn tact, she mysteriously disappeared a few moments later, and not a trace of her could anywhere be found, though a dear brother was on the point of raving and tearing his hair at her loss. In his rage and grief, he went to the station-house on the Square and demanded the arrest of the hack driver, charging him with the ab duction of his sister. As the hackman, however, had been doing nothing outside of hia legitimate business, and was not aware that he had been instrumental in any mischief, he was not molested. The brother was by no means put out by this and he relaxed not a whit of hia vig ilance. Persevering, he at last got hold of a clue, and alout dark Saturday night sta tioned himsell near the corner of Cherry and Broad streets. He had not long to wait. In a few moments the identical hackman of Cedar street and the Square drove up, and a gay and gallant young butcher step ping to the door of the vehicle, was in the act of assisting the missing, divorce-seeking wife, who had so mysteriously disappeared the day previous, to alight, when the sharp report of a pistol suddenly brought the whole party up standing. The vengeful bullet whistled through the wool of the un fortunate hackman, but left him unharmed, and the interference of the police prevented further demonstrations. The woman was conveyed to the house of her brother, where she now is. while that affectionate relative of hers was arrested and yesterday paid a fine of S50 and costs n the Kecorder s Court, for his careless ness. ' Uruxii: Swept Away. The railroad ridgc over Drake's creek, Kentucky, on the Louisville and Nashville railroad, twenty-six miles from this point, was swept away on Sunday by the freshet following the heavy storm of Saturday night. It was carried a distance of sixty feet, but a trans fer of passengers of the morning trains was made, nnd very little delay resulted. The structure has been replaced and trains are again running on time. The bridges on the Nashville and Chat tanooga road received no damage from the sudden rise of streams. The Nashville Custom-house. The President has ordered that the building of the Nashville Custom-house be forthwith proceeded with, and Major James R. Wil led, late of (!en. The building will be second only to the capilol in capacity and mag nificence, and will be used for a Custom house, Postoftice, Federal Court rooms, and various l-ederal offices. It is to be lire- proof, and constructed of heme materials. The plan is now being drawn tip, and the work of building will shortly commence. The Wheat Croi.
