PKILADELPHTA, December 17.— The
taking of testimony in the case of Oscar
I^. Booz. the West Point cadet who died
two weeks ago, from injuries which, his
v-arents allege, v.-ere inflicted at tJie West
l^oint Military Academy, was begun to
day by the Board of Inquiry appointed Ly
the Secretary of War. Two sessions were
hold at Bristol, the home of ■ the Booz
family, and another in. this city,, in the
late afternoon. .
The members of the board are Generals
Brooke. Cioa:«s, raid • Bates, and r they are
accompanied by Captain Dean, of the
Fifth Artillery, who acts as recorder.
The court sat in the .study of the church
which adjoins tiie Booz homestead. The
vitnesses "wcre'^William H. 800z, . , the
iather; Sirs.. Sarah Booz, the motherland-
Nellie Booz. the sister of the young man;
F.ev. Dr. Allison, Dr. Weaver, a Bristol
j&ysician who attended Oscar. Booz, and.
peveral others. ;
The board left for New York to-night,
and will sit at West Point to-morrow af
ternoon. ■ ■
TESTIMONY OF FATHER. . '
~Slr. Booz, the father, testified that, his
son. had "nrritten home on several occa
sions that he had been hazed, ue enter
ed the academy in June, IS9S, and in Au
pust he wrote home that he had been in
a light and had received a pair of 'black
eyes,. and .that he.had been knocked out
by a blow over the heart.
Sir. Booz said he went" to West Pointto
Fee his son, and told him he roust stand It.
Oscar toid; his father he expected to ba
hazed; bui he did not want, to be treated
brutally. The- father said Oscar did not
want' his mother to know how he was be
ing treated- : . . .
Mr. Booi then told how Oscar had in
forwed him ,that'-tobasco - sauce had' been
forcod down his throat. Oscar said the
cadets would pull the blankets from him'
and pour hot was from a candle on -his

Booz thought: the officers at the
academy could step the brutality, but lie"
would not say they condoned it. He, could
not understand why the cadets had treat
ed his son in sue!; a severe manner. -Oscar
spent all of last year at home" in an en
cecvyir to buildup his health. He never
would reveal the identity of nis persecu

ilrs. B£?oz testified tliat her son had
v.-rittta hc-tne that West Point was an un
fit place for a young man -who wanted to
do right, and that parents should not send
their sons there:-
Neliie Bcoz, a. sister of the deceased
young man, testified that in a letter re
ceived by the family on August 7th, Oscar
told of a flg-ht he had with another cadet,
*a:>d said that he had fought until he was
v.-inded. The cadets called: him a coward
and a disgrace to the corps. If he did not
go into the fight, they .. said, 'the "fellows
would inalce life tailjearable for him." He
ssked liis father for permission to resign.
O^car described many little indignities
•which were practiced on him.. If he had
not swallowed tlie tobasco sauce he
•would have strangled. They'were holding
him down, and he could do ijothing else.
TUBERCULOSIS OF LARYNX.
Dr. J. SolisJ.Cohen, a. throat specialist,'
testififed here this evening that - Oscar'
had tuberculosis of the larynx' and that
when he came to this city for treatment"
his case was hopeless.; He thought that;
if tobasco sauce had been forced - dov.*n. :
Eooz's tliroat, it may" have made him'
more susceptible to tuberculosis. '■ " •
S^mond L. Albert, a class-mate cf
Oscar Booz's, testified that Booz was
not hazed any more s than ;any otlser
cadet. He was one of Booz's tent-mate=
while In carap. He and Booz and other
fourth-year men, he said; were made" to
go "ridiculous stunts," such as making
the upper-class-men's . beds. " "and other
vniaanly and disgraceful things. What
he meoat by: tlie latter, he s^id; was
none of the public's business.
One night some fourth-year men were
forced to open their mouths and . shut
their eyes, when some one squirtod Into
their mouths what' he believed- to be to
basco sauce. It did not hurt Albert,; be-,
cause there 'was not enough of iit.

mers broke down the door of Roiia-s cell
and soon the thoroughly terrified negro
was inthe 'hands .of the men^who placed

entered, dragging the negro after them.
A few minutes was consumed in the

OWNESBORO', XT, December 17.^
John Rolla, who was lynched, to-night at
Booneville, was implicated ■by Rowland,
one of the negroes lynched last night at
Rockport, but denied Kis guiit. ■ He -told
conflicting stories, and it was learned
that he; was away from the Verandah'
Hotel, where he worked, about the time
Simons was murdered. Confronted with
this evidence, Rolla weakened, and con
fessed his share" in the crime, admitting'
that; he , struck the first blow, and" that
the other 'two negroes helped him to kill
