right now, at the maximum rate charged in Richmond for electric
light, YOU can burn an 8 candle power tungsten lamp TEN HOURS
FOR ONLY ONE CENT, or you can burn a 16 c. p. tungsten lamp FIVE
HOURS FOR ONLY ONE CENT, or you can burn a 32 c. p. tungsten
lamp TWO AND A HALF HOURS FOR ONLY ONE CENT.
Docs this exceptionally low price look like "extortion" to YOU?
Where you have such an excellent service as is provided in Richmond
at such an EXCEPTIONALLY LOW rate all talk about "extortion" is
the wildest nonsense.
This present excellent service and low price is due NOT to compe?
tition, but to co-operation and concentration?YOU know that per?
fectly well.
Competition in electric light and power service ALWAYS AND IN?
EVITABLY LEADS TO A DEPRECIATED SERVICE AND A HIGHER
PRICE FOR THAT SERVICE. This is an economic and a natural
LAW; and no man, no association passing resolutions, no city can
change that law.
The Richmond and Henrico Railway Company asks a franchise
which will enable that company to "compete" ONLY FOR THE PRO?
FITABLE LIGHT AND POWER BUSINESS OF THE CENTRAL BUSI?
NESS SECTION OF THIS CITY, WITHOUT GOING INTO THE RESI?
DENCE SECTIONS AT ALL. Since the bulk of residence lighting, at
the present low rates, is done AT A LOSS, is it not perfectly plain to
YOU why the Richmond and Henrico Company asks this particular
franchise?
The Richmond and Henrico Railway Company, by its PERSISTENT
ENDEAVOR TO SELL OUT to the Virginia Railway and Power Com?
pany, HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT ITS PURPOSE IS TO USE FOR
BARTER AND SALE THE FRANCHISES IT OBTAINS FROM THIS
CITY. Do YOU know of any more insidious and baneful form of EX?
TORTION than that?
