AS ACT •uppleniental to an Act entitled "An Act to
amend tiie several Acts respecting Copyright," approv
ed February third, eighteen hundred and thirty-one.
and to the Acta hi Addition thereto aud Amendment
thereof. _
Be it enacted by the Senate ami flbe- "/ Representative*
of the ITaited Slates of America in Congress attmOlM.
That the provision of 'said act shall extend to and in
clude photographs and the negatives thereof which sna 1 1
herd after, bo made, and shall enure to the benefit ot tin'
autu irs of the same iv tho samo manner, and to Hie same
extont, and upon th s same conditions ss to Ihe authors es (
prints and en-rruviugs. ~ .
Sec 2. And be it further enacted, That a printed copy
of every book, pamphlet, map, chart, musical composition,
print, engr.-.ving, or photo.raph, for which a copyrlgbt
shall be secured under said sets, shall be transmitted free ■
or postago or other expense by the author or proprietor I
thereof, within one mouth of tbe date of publication, to '
the library of Congress at Washington for the use of said
library; acd the librarian of Congress is hereby required
to Klv'e a receipt In writing for the samo.
8«0. 3. And be it further enacted, That If any propri
etor of a book, pamp let, map, chari, musical composi
tion, piint, engraving, or photograph, for which a copy
right shall be secured as aforesaid, shall neglect to deliver
the samo pursuant to the rcnuirement of this net, It shall
be tbe duty of the librarian of Congress to make demand
thereof in'writing, at any time within twelve months
after the publication thereof; and in default of tho de
' livery thereof within ono month after the demand shall
have been made, ihe right of exclusive publication se
cured to such proprietor under the acts of Congress re
specting copyright shall be forfeited.
Sso. i. And lie it further enacted, Thnt in the construc
tion of this act the word -'book" shall bo construed to
mean every volume and part ol a volume, together with
all maps, prints or other engravings belonging thereto',
and thail include a copy of auy second or nubseepient edi
tion which shall be published with any additions, whether
the first editiou of such book shall have been published
before or alter the passing of this act: Provided, huw
evtr, That it shall not tie requisite to deliver to tho
said library any copy of the second or any subsequent
editiou of any book, unless the same shall eoutaiu addi
tions as aforesaid, nor of any book which is not tbe sub
ject of copyright.
