Documents- for the People. A friend writes us from a County west of this, expressing his waim approval of the recent appeal in this paper to the Work ingmen of the State, and suggesting a general circulation of this appeal. We have printed this appeal in pamphlet form for distribution, gratis. Send in your orders, friends, and the pamphlets will be forwarded at once. Public Speaking. We are requested to state, that. Capt. J. Q. DeCaiteiet, by re quest, will address the people at Nat Jones' on Tuesday next, in behalf of the nominees of the Union Constitutional Convention. Time will be divided with any gentleman of the ojiposition who may attend. Progress. We learn that this " amnestied hero " as he is styled by his organ, the Progress will le replied to by Mr. Booker Hutchings on the partof "the opposition." Mr. Hutchings cooled Mr. Bledsoe down not long since, at Morrisville, and it is believed he can do the same for this corn-stalk Captain. m - m The leading Rebels promised in 1865 to submit in good faith to the national author ity, and take such terms as the nation might give them. But now they demand their own terms. They thus stand convicted before the world for both treason and lying. Pass this fact round among the people. m A. vote against a Convention is a vote for slavery. The colored man who does not vote for a Convention, and for Republicans as "Ce'iegates, consents to put the shackles again on his own limbs. The Rebel leaders of Wake County have nominated the following ticket for the Con vention : Daniel G. Fowle, Bennett T. Blake, P. H. Mangum, Jesse A. Norris. It is ru mored, however, that Mr. Mangum declines. The loyal men will soon have their ticket be fore the people, and there is no doubt that they will sweep the County by a large ma jority. . m For the Standard. Mksses. Editors : William T.JBlu me, Esq., has been regularly nominated by the Itepub lican Convention of Cabarrus County for the Constitutional Convention. Mr. Blume s sterling integrity and unfaltering Republi canism gave him the nomination without a single dissenting voice. With perfect har mony among ourselves, the colored vote a unit, and in a County which gave Holden a majority over Worth, Mr. Blume's majority over the disuniotists will be overwhelming. The Papal Power in Peril. The Garibaldians continue to cross the frontier. The telegraph is cut and Rome is isolated from tbe world. Spain has decided to join any action of the Catholic powers in iavor ot the rope. Victor Emanuel has issued a proclama tion denouncing Garibaldi and declaring that the French policy meets the views of the Italian Government. The Pope has left the Vatican and sought refuse in Castle St. Angelo. Charleston, Oct. 31. A conservative convention to take action in behalf of the while population of this State, has been called to meet in Columbia on the 6th of November. Mr. Crawshay, the late iron-master mil lionaire, went into his garden one day, and pointing to a row of gooselerry trees, ab ruptly told the gardener to take them all up and stick the branches into the earth, leav ing the roots turned upward. "They don't seem to grow as they are," he remarked, "so I'll try my plan." Mr. Crawshay then turn ed away abrubtly, whilst the gardner, with out making any reply, immediately set to work. In a few hours the job was complet ed, and upon Mr. Crawshay returning 'and finding that his commands had been obeyed, he .tbserved "That's ail right: put, 'em back again. I only did it to try ye ; you'll do. I believe I've got a sensible fellow at last." Nothing could be better than tbe speech of a Mobile barber, whom a number of ex Rebels lately offered him f 2,000 to run for Congress; "Gentlemen, it I sell myself, I sell my .people ; " if I sell my people, I sell my children." If anything balf as good was said at Antietam the other day we shall be glad to record it. m m A Not fob the Meteorologists. A friend told us on Saturday thai he knew an old farmer in t he country who has had a standing let of $10 with a neighbor for the last thirty years that, it would rain on the first Saturday in August of each year. Dur ing the time he has won twenty-seven out of the thirty bets, winning, of course, again on Saturday., We do not know upon what me teorological data the old gentleman bases his calculations; but jf the above statement be true, they would appear to be almost infal lible.
