FROM THE UNITED STATES GAZETTE. "THE SUMMER'S GONE." The summer's gone and every flower That Waved its beauties to the sun, Has bloomed its brief but lovely hour, Has shed its fragrance and is gone. The summer's gone and many a hope Has budded with the early spring, Has seen its blossoms brightly ope To wither like a blighted thing ! The summer's gone and many an eye, That brightly shone, in tears is shrouded And hearts that loved us withered lie, Or worse than this, by coldness clouded. The sHmmer's gone but soon again, Shall blush and breathe upon the air, The enamoured flotrer, and paint the glen, But those 1 loved will not be there. Sept. 25th, 1836, E11- A- ROM THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. THE WIDOW GRIMES. The widow Grimes is still alive, A lady, sage and good She speaks no scandal of her friends Except as ladies should. She always frowns upon her foes, But smiles her friends to cheer Whoever finds old Grimes' hen, Can send it back to her. She's kind and bonnteous to the poor, She's affable and free, She never talks one fast asleep, Except when she drinks tea. Her neighbors thought she had turned out, Some score of years ago, But that her friends mistaken were, Her after life shall show. 8he got a cap and bonnet fine, All trimmed with ribbon gay, And tried her best to catch a bean, Some naughty people say. In church she always gravely looks, And has been seen to weep ; Bui there she ne'er was known to snore, Unless she fell asleep. And now this worthy family, Old Grimes, his wife and son, And beauteous daughters have heen praised, Our rhyming must be done. Eclipses. In the year 1837, there will ! be five Eclipses three of the sun, and two of the moon. A very partial eclipse of the sun will take place on the 5th April, 4th May, and 29th October. On the 20th April, the moon will bo totally eclipsed, also on the I3th October. Of these, the last will be visible in the United States. The Public Dcposites. An at tempt was made to amend the bill, in such j manner that each town should be entitled to recei ve a part of the money, in propor tion to its population, but the amendment was rejected by a vote of 35 to 29. Boston Daily Advertiser. The Crops. The Chnrleston Mercury says, we are happy to learn through a ffenllemin just from the interior, that the crops in the Upper Districts are very good. The grain crop was generally .fine. In Pendleton, Abbeville, and Edgefield, the cotton crops has also yieldedJ well. In Abbeville and Edgefield, it is much lar ger than last year, and the greater part has already been gathered. Whatever may be the falling off in other parts of the South, it is certain that in this State the crop of short staple will be heavy. Our accounts from the Sea Island Planters, we are sorry to say, are unpromising. Dr. Graham, the famous lecturer on all kinds of abstinence, has come out most vi olently against roast pig. This is natur al enough in a philosopher that considers saw dust pudding the chef d'eeuvre of eat ables, Albany Daily. Advice. Mr. Send, in a sermon on e vil speaking says elegantly, M our advice must not fail like a violent" storm, bearing down and making that to droon which it was meant to cherish and refresh ; it must descend, as the dew upon the tender herb,' or like melting flakes of snow the softer it falls the longer it dwells upon, and the deeper it sinks in the mind." Melancholy Accident and loss of life. The steam Boat Rhode Island, bound from Providence to New York, on Mon day night 7th inst. run into the sloop Eli za Nichols, bound to New Bedford, ren dering the sloop a perfect wreck, and a Mrs. Howland was unfortunately killed. Two persons were rescued from the cabin of the sloop by being cut out. PRATT'S, Artificial Nipple Shield, FOR the prevention and cure of Sore Nip ples., The following highly respectable certificates are deemed a sufficient recommenda tion for those who are afflicted in this manner, to try them. From Doctor Wm. P. Dewees, late Professor of Obstetrics, in the Medical University of Phi ladelphia : Doct. ELIJAH FRATT ; Dear Sir : As I feel it a matter of much ublic importance, to possess a means of lessen ng the terrible sufferings from sore Nipples, I have much pleasure in being able to say, that the "Shield" you offer for the preventing and the cure of this malady, is better adapted to the purpose than any I have heretofore seen. In the two or three instances I have known them to be used, much satisfaction has been expressf ed ; and I have no hesitation to believe it wil generally succeed : I am so well persuaded of this, at this moment, that I cannot forbear to ex press a wish that our city, through the va rious Apothecaries, may be supplied with them. I am yours, tec. M. P. DEWEES, M. D. Philadelphia, Jan. 13, 1831.
