Yesterday afternoon the city council met at their rooms with Aldermen Carr, Bnrch, (lot man, I'cnuiuRton, Slaughter ami Young blood present. The mayor being absent, Alderman Burch took the chair. Perry Elliott, with whom the city had contracted to put up street signs, put in a bill for $133.35, hich was allowed. City Attorney Graham called the council's attention to the delin qnent tax list. He said that there were a great many small tax payers who were still in arrears and the amounts should be paid. There were two institutions, one of whom had not paid any taxes for two years, that ho wished to call the council's nttcution to These were Hargrove collego and St. Agnes academy. Upon inves tigation he had learned that these two institutions of learning were not run for gain, but for the moral benefit derived by the youth of the country. Unon this the attorney asked council to put them on the exemp tion list, and asked that the taxes paid by the Catholic kohool be re funded. Upon motion this was done. The pound keeper asked council for more recompense; said he could not continue to do work for them for the money he was making out of it. No action.
