Wheat he gased upon tke dead he broke out In loud lamentations for "Maine Jeff." Earnest were the prayers of this simple old negro for the rent of Mr. Davis sont, and the comfort of his berenved family. It was a solemn and affecting scene: an eloeaent tribute to the Madness of Jefi Orson Davis to his slave. One of the beet mlotries that I have ever heard was delivered by an ex-slave Rev. A. I Dotson. a pre sldtog eider tn the colored Methodist church. He spoke In Port Worth. Tex.. Just after Mr. Davis died. The speataar had lived on a plantation ad joining that of Mr. Drts. and per sonally kaew all of his slaves. He had ssit Mr. DatU often. He said that he felt that tt was his privilege and his duty to tell his race what kind of a man Mr. Darts was; that a better man aad a kinder master never lived; that he was the friend aad protector of hts servants. He then spoke at length on the causes of the war. He read a letter from Lincoln to Alexander H. Stephens. Just .before Mr. Lincoln was Inaugu rated. In which Mr. Lincoln said that It was not the purpose of the Repub lican party to Interfere with slavery In the states, aad that the Southern slave holders would be as safe In their slaves under his administration as they were under that of Washing ton; that the Republican party was pledged to prevent the extension of slavery into the territories, and not to its extinction in the states. The speaker then showed that Mr. Davis was not responsible for the establish ment of slaverj'. and bad done all in bis power to mitigate its hardships. Such Is th universal testimony of all the negroes who ever knew him. This proves that he possessed a truly noble character. In that he was kind to aad considerate of the poor, the helpless aad the humble. When General Grant was dying at Mount McGregor, the Boston Globe Instructed Ite New Orleans corro spondent to get Mr. Davis to write a criticism upon Grant's n.JMUry ca reer. Such an article would bave been extensively read and would have paid Mr. Davis handsomely. He was a poor man. The taoeey would have been legitimately earned. lis ten to the reply. If you want to do justice to the dead. Here It Is: "Dear Sir: Your request. In be half of a Boston journalist, for me prepare a criticism ot General Grant's military career can not be omplled with, for the following rea sons: "First. General Grant is dying. "Second, though be Invaded our country, it waB with a strong band, and. as far as I know, he abetted neither arson nor pillage, and has, since the war, I believe, showed no malignity to Confederates, either ot the military or civil service. "Therefore, Instead ot seeking to disturb the quiet of Ills closing hours. I would, if tt were in my power, con tribute to the peace of his mind and the comfort of his body." This shows tho magnanimity ot his character. Hnvy and malice were strangers to his greet heart. What he said of General Grant was but the expression of the fooling of the South. He fought us hard in war. but he. too, was magnanimous in peace. It was Grant who suggested, when the Immortal Lee surrendered, that tho Confederate soldlors should keen their horses, to cultivate their farms; it was Grant who or dereil that rations should be Issued to famished soldiers; it was Grant who dolled Prosldont Johnson and refused to arrest General Leo. alter he was narolod; It was Grant who forced Prosldent Johnson to allow tho cx-Confodcratu, Gcnoral Taylor, to visit Jofforson Davis, when ho was a prisoner In Fortress Monroe It was Grant who said to tho haters and traducors ot the South; "Let us have peace." The South joins the North In pay Ing tribute to tho character and ge nius or Genoral Grant. We are proud ot him as an American citizen, and we claim a share in the glory of his name. The war reduced Jefferson Dav jto poverty He became poorer and : poorer the tr-ngr he lived. Time and again subscriptions for his relief wore started He always peremptorily stopped such movements', upon the ground that there were too many poor and crippled Confederate 'AoWfbrs add destitute Confederate 'widows aad orphans who needed alt that eoM be siren. He sold to his peo ple: "Take care of the destitute Confederate veteran, tho 'ttiow and the orphan. I can not accept your aid while they are la need. ' Thus, he was always thinking of his people Bret. It Is easy to be generous and con- si stent In prosperity. It Is hard, it is neMe, it It grant. It Nt eHbllme to be ttXmnwteaU d isn arses la poverty and adversity. This Is the kind ef man that Jefferson Davie was. Fer these reasons hat name will live and be honored when the names of his faradueers will bare been forgotten, for these reasons Southern mothers will ever delight to leach thefr chil dren to revere his memory and to emntttte his amiable, vtnootas, devo ted and exalted character. Shackles were placed upon his limbs en account of hie Monty to hU principles and his people. He suf fered for what we bade blm do. From that day Jefferson Darts beeame the askttyr of the Sooth. Those shackles sank deep into our hearts. They made him a coneecrated men. For the things that I have saM. and for away more things that I ralp.ht say.
