Sulphur Is certainly an Ideal spot for lovers and poets. For lovers bo causo It contains so many llttlo nooks and shady cornors and rippling water falls; for poets becauso It affords such an Inexhaustible flold of mattor. Wo find hero tho largest supply of Inox haustlblo wator of tho purest nnd clearest type, sonio of which Is med ical, whllo somo of It Is simply pure, soft water. Gorges, cliffs, blurts anil valleys mnko up a world of very flno scenery. Tho national government on tho 19th of November, 1902, segregated and platted a reservation and park containing G40 acres at Sulphur, and , It Is very broken and Irregular, as tho government engineers In chargo seem ed, to liavo had sanitation as their main purposo as well ns protecting tho beautiful springs and streams and taking In as much of tho sconory as posslblo within tho prescribed amount of land allowed thorn- by con gress (640 acros) and tho result Is tho reservation Is about thrco miles long whllo It Is only a fow hundred feet In width In places and sovcral hundred yards In others', and a small reservation on tho south, poparato, embracing tho Wilson Springs, and vto aro told-tho government Intends to establish a soldiers' and Bailors' home on tho latter reservation. Russia's backdown In Manchuria Is comploto, although tho controlling spirits In tho govornmont aro still determined, un less confronted with actual war, final ly to con8ummnto tho annexation of the province. It must bo admitted, howovor, that thoso stntosmon, for tho llrst tlmo, aro thoroughly discouraged by tho cut look. Their latost mnnouvor ollcltcd a far moro dangerous outcry than thoy anticipated from tho thrco great coun tries Intorested Japan, England and thn United States. Tho aitltudo of tho United States, and particularly of tho American peo ple, causod an especial shock hero, Tho foreign offlco expected a pla- tonic demur from Washington, but had no Idea thnt tho pross and pcoplo of Uio United Statos would bo thrown Into a stato of anger that might Impol tho govornmont to uso forco to keep tho door opon to Amorlcan trade In Manchuria. Consequently tho bold position tken up at Pekln becamo untenable.
