When Will Buildin
Costs Be Lower
There sire three factors nccossaiy to bring about a reduction in,Jjuilding costs:
1. A reduction in demand for buildings.
2. A reduction in wages of labor.
3. A reduction in prices of building material.
This country is short nearly three and one-half billion dollars' worth of normal
building construction. Until this shortage is made up there will surely be a
continual demand for buildings. .
It does not seem probable that the laboring man will be content to accept any
reduction in the size of his pay -envelope.
It has been estimated that about 90 per cent of the cost of an average frame
house goes back to the laborer who cut the timber, prepared the raw Inaterial
for the market, transported it over the railroads and finally built it into the
structure.
There are other fundamental causes for the high prices of commodities in
general. Considering the above factors, does it seem reasonable to expect
any substantial reduction in building costs soon? '
