Chief Klcclrician C, R. Gilman states that the failures from all causes have av eraged about .- per cent of the hours of lighting, and that 4 per cent of this is due LO the failure of locomo tives in severe weather. Altogether, the SI. l'aul Road has 28:5 cars equipped for- this method of lighting, There are 140 coaches, sixty sleepers, twenty-three mail cars twelve dining, nineteen baggage, eighteen parlor and live buffet cars, in addition to this number I in com pany litis eight coaches and nine sleepers which are lighted entirely by storage batteries. The electrical' de partment is now experimenting with axle-lighting (hvices, with which it has equipped three cars .with as many systems. This makes a total of over three hundred, wliich is tho largest number of electiic-ligbted cars in service 011 any one railroad in the country.
