During the high wind yes terday a number ef vessels came into this port. All managed to make the harliOr in safety. The ''Perseverance" came near run ning on the west pier, in consequence of lines getting foul, wlcoh prevented the free workine of her iib. A laree number of spectators thronged the wharf during the afternoon, with an eye for adventures, j Fire Alarm asp Fire. An alarm of fire came from Box No. 3, about two o'clock Sat urday morning. It proved false. At ten minutes past seven o'clock that evening, a fire broke out in Collin's Foundry, at the head of Pittsburgh street. The inside ut the establishment was entirely consumed. Parties were not able to give us the estimat ed loss, and the amount of insurance, any, on the property. a A Dentist receives a Diploma. We were gratified to learn from the Stark Coun Republican of a late date, that onr old Dr. ,T. If. Siddell, of Canton, had some very fine specimens of teeth on exh"! bition at the Fair at that place last week. They were pronounced very fine by all who saw them. The Society awarded the Doc tor a diploma. We happen to know that Siddell can make the beet teeth in old Stark coanty. He wears there the "belt" in his profession. Person al. Doctors R. and J. Hunter, No. 10 Atwater Building, announce that they will return to New York on the 2-iltli inst., and that all who desire consultations with them should arrange to have the interview immediately. We are gratified to know that these medical gentlemen have been eminently successful in their practice here, and that they have given so general satis faction. Their departure will be deeply regretted. Newberrv Coal. The demand for this coal increases daily. Arlington Kelley and Leon's Troupeof Negro Minstrels will open an engagement for three nights, this evening, in Brainard'a Hall. Common fame places them at the head of their pro fession. They are without doubt the best, liveliest and most original of all the ebony companies now traveling. ' The "end ny n" are desciibed ae the most irresistable of their class. Arlington's oddities would havemade Puritan grin, and it would have gone hard with Calvinism to expose itself to his grim aces and antics. Kelley's rendering of his beautiful ballads takes captive the most cul tivated ear, and as a dancer MrXeon, we suppose, is unapproachable. ' It has been so long Bince we have had a touch of first-class negro minstrelsy, that we shall expect to see Brainard'a Hall crowded each night of the engagement,, . f , i of of in to on the The Need for a Protestant Hospital. [Communicated.] As the sribjeeJ of Hospitals is just now en grossing the pablic mind, some suggestions on the expediency of establishing a Protes tant City Hospital may be timely. . As St, Vincents Hospital now stands no free patient can be admitted. . The only class who can be called such, are those paid for by the city in accordance with an agreement made by Bishop Rappe with the City Council, Who are pledr-ed to an annual sti pend in donsiderarion of a certain number of beds in said hospital. We understand an application was made to Bishop Rappe within the past week, to receive a sick man of his own faith. The application could only be complied with by the payment of six dollars per week, unless the man in question was included in the class of pau peraior whom ihe city pays. ' The question then before our citizens re solves itself thus: Are Protestants willing to give Bishop Rappe funds to make his hos pital a charity hospital in more than name, a free institution open to all ? Or shall these same Protestants establish one for themselves of the character our city requires? That Bishop Rappe earnestly desires to make St. Vincent's a free hospital noone ac quainted with his benevolent character can doubt. But is not our city larre enough to paslain two institutions of like character, one of which shall be based on principles in accordance with republican institutions whollv Protestant in character? There are great political questions involved in amonop oly of charit: a by "one class of religionists which cannot be here discussed. We believe two hospitals can as well be sustained in Cleveland as two orphan asy lums, and without antagonism of feeling. To how manv Protestants is Bishop Rappe indebted for contributions in aid of his an nual Orphans' Fair? The same heart v good will would be manifested by those same Protestants in contributing to any effort he might make for the support of St, Vincent's Hospital. The charities of the Church of Rome are world-renowned, but this fact does not ex cuse Protectants from likeendeavor9 to ame liorate the wretchedness at their doors. The effect of the Romanists' example should be Christian emulation of good works. If Protestants are willing to make St. Vincent's a free institution, so far as their liberal benefactions can avail to open its doors, then God speed t he work! But at this propitious time for the establishment of a great charity there may be some among us who would prefer to cast their offerings nto another treasury. The Orphan Asylum is no longer entirely dependent on charity. It is partly endowed. The Aid Society has" had its day of useful ness, but the alarm of war is over and that no longer appeals to public sympathy. The Soldiers Home, too, is transferred to the State Institution at Columbus. What then is totake the place of these enterprises? Shall we sit down and fold our hands, our work accomplished, or shall we manifest our gratitude to that God who has delivered our nation from unexampled perils, by new seat in nis service j Let then the Protetant Hospital be no longer a fiction. Build one with doors wide enough for all, and prove to a skeptical world the ability otr rotestants to carry out this great work in a true catholic spirit, and in such a manner that the city can point to it as one of her noblest institutions. CorRTixo is Street Cars. Everything is good in is season, saith the Preacher; all things are good in their time and order, say the Stoics, but all the wit of the world, and all the humor and fun of life come from the ill-timing and the false relations of things, whether the scene be real or conceived. What is commonly called "courting," or keeping company," or "sparking," is a good thing in its place, a very sweet thing, we suppose, but we submit that a street -car, or a corner, or a concert-room is hardly the place for confiding the tender sentiments, and for the "manufacture" of the enchantment which makes each party'the prisoner of the other. Any open exhibition of this process is simply disgusting, notwithstanding the assertion goes counter to the accepted dogma of our great essayist, "All mankind love a lover." We saw a couple on a Kins man street car, Saturday noon, who were "killing" in their demonstrations. He was very mellow, but she was down right soft. Ripe as a full pipin in Septem ber, she was ready at any second to fall into his lap. Apollo shot his shafts of words hither and thither, while Leucothoe turned her face, expressive as green cheese, towards him, like an owl to the too dazzling sun, and accomplished the most extensive love- grin noted in amorous annals. In the height of her rapture, her immense nose, ornamented with a big wart on the star board side, was thrust nearly into the north ast corner of his port eye. At length he patted her hand, squeezed it, and jumped off, followed by her eyes which hastened to overtake him. We predict that Snooks will propose at the next meeting, and of conrse she won't accept, oh, no ! Exit Mosquito. While people are cower ing over grates and grumbling because of the cold weather, let them reflect that the fall of the mercury has annihilated the mosquitos which, during the late week of pleasant weather, beat all the plagues of Egypt in the way of annoyance and pure cussedness. Monsieur Mosquito woke up the other morning with the feeling that he slept cold the night previous. His attenu ated legs were chilled, and he felt generally numb and desolate. He has gone his way, and we shall not hear his voice in this luti tude for months. We notice that the house-fly and innumer able out-door inseet3,'aecompanied Monsieur to the pale realm. No more, this season will the careful housewife's fine curtains and her newly-whitewashed ceiling break out with cutaneous disease. The pedestrian cannot turn a fallen leaf in the fields and woods, but he shall find under it insects hiding from their doom, the fall of the tern perature. It is said that the reduction, a few degrees, of the mean temperature would revolutionize the animal creation. What prodigious amount of life is sacrificed by tne autumnal Irosts : Italiax Opera. Max Strakosch has en- gaged Brainard's Hall for Saturday evening of this week, but we understand that the appearance here of his troupe at this 'early stage of the season, is contingent on the re sult of his engagement, this week, at Buffalo. If he does not at this time offer us a season opera, the entertainment is simply de ferred. He is. traversing the country with a most admirable troupe. The leading artistes are named below: Signorina Angiolina Ghioni, the dramatic ?rima donna, Irom the Italian Opera, New 'ork Academy of Mnsic, and the theatre Tacon, Havana. Mine. Patti Strakosch, contralto. M'lle Canissa, prima donna, Graver's Grand Opera. Signors Maccaterri and Tamaro, first tenors of the New York. Boston and Phila delphia Academies uf Music. Signor Mancnsi, baritone, from the Grand Opera, Theatre Tacon, Havana. bignor Augustino susini, basso protundo, late of Max Maretzek's Italian Opera, New York. Mine. Parozzi and Sitrnora Bazzani, second donnas. Signor Ximenes and Signor Perni, second tenors. Signor Locatelliand Signor Massio, second bassos . . Miltoniah Tarleai'x. This mammoth work of art, which has been on exhibition Brainard's Hall the past two weeks, was offered for the last time, Saturday night and hundreds of our citizenB availed themselves the chance of obtaining a final view of painting. The exhibition has been a decided success. The hall has been crowded nearly every night, and there seems to be one expression concerning it, and that, approbation. A large nmber of costly presents have been given away. The prizes have ranged value from that of a eilver butter knife elegant sets of silver tea service. The managers have used no trickery in the dis tribution of gifts, but the most open fairness been practiced. We believe the Tableaux will be next put exhibition in Baltimore. We commend jiroprietoT, Mr. W. W. Wert, and the business manager, Mr. A. M. Dorland, to the press everywhere. They are perfect gentle men, ana deserve tne largest puoiic pat ronage. as [Communicated.] CRICKET MATCH. Return Match at Meadville of the Forest City and Excelsior Clubs— The Excelsiors Victorious. The return match between the Forest City Cricket Club of Cleveland and the Excelsior Cricket Club of Meadrille,' was pjaved on the grbtinds of the latter on Sat urday, and resulted in the victory of the latter by eight runs. It will be remembered that the first match was played in this city about a month age, and resulted in a handsome victory for the Forest City Club. Onr music-loving public are anticipating a rare treat on Thursday and Friday evenings of this week, on the occasion of the appearance at Brainard's Hall of the above favorite combination. Madame Varian and Mr Hoffman are well known here, having given our citizens numerous entertainments of very superior character. They are accom panied by Mr. George Simpson, an English tenor, who has an excellent reputation in New York, and Mr. Nicholas J. Goodale, a young violinist ot wonnerlul capabilities and astonishing performance. As the coming of these artist3 will be the chief topic in musical circles for three or four days, we subjoin for the benefit of the same, the following notice of a concert late ly given in Hartford, Conn., by this combi nation, which we find in the Evening Pre: The first of the proposed series of concerts to be given under the auspices of the Young Men's Institute took place last evening. The charming voice and easy execution of Madame Varian, and the delicate, crisp manipulation of Hodman, are the same as ever. Mr. Simpson, tae tenor, made a most favorable impression on the audience, ilis voice is exceedingly pleasing, of good com pass, tine quality and completely unaer nis control. His rendering of Thomas' ballad 'Blue Eved Bell" brought an encore, when he gave the beautiful old English ballad, "Sallv in our Ally," in a manner which stamped it one of the eems of the evening. Madame Varian responded to an encore with the display piece "II Bacio" which was well rendered, though she shone chiefly in the ana trout "Kigoletto" and mine nnai duett Hoffman also created a sensation by his facile and expressive rendering of his brilliant compositions and selections. The concert was a success, and the attendance augured well for the Institute, in this new line of Public Entertainments. H. T. Hower 4 Co. We notice that H. T. Hower A Co., 230 Superior street, are rapidly filling up their establishment. which by the way is one of the most exten sive in the city, with a second invoice of fall and winter goods, of every conceivable variety and the best quality. These goods were purchased in the Eastern market at low rates, and they olaim that they are con sequently enabled to offer their commodities at lower figures that any other house in town. Their fall and winter stock is very large. We would call special attention to their cloak department, in which may be found the latest novelties of style. They offer a magnificent supply of shawls and general dress goods. Silks of all varieties grace and enrich their store, and of cloth stock, flan nels, white and knit goods, they have an in exhaustible supply. Winter is now rapidly approaching, and the thoughts of all classes are being turned, of necessity, to the prob lem of keeping themselves warm. Ladies and gentlemen can find whatever they need in the way of wear, at this establishment, and we are sure that they can do no better at any other store in town. See advertise ment, and give H. T. Hower A Co. a call. A Semi-Mormos Feat. A man of this city, we don't know his name, who has no doubt Mormon proclivities, did a clever thing Saturday evening, and we suppose his gener osity reaped the full measureof deserved re ward. The announcement had been made public that the managers of the Miltonian Tableaux would present a silver tea service worth $75, to the man who should bring the largest number of females to the show. Aforesaid unknown man embarked in the adventure, and between seven and eight o'clock had one hnndred girls in the space about the ticket office. It took so long to arrange the matter of getting tickets, regis tering, Ac, Ac,, that some of his company tired and went home. But all thing3 hav ing been at length arranged, this lord of the petticoats escorted his bevy of shop fairies to the gallery. His bill was twenty five dollars. We think that no one could or did successfully compete with him. He no doubt took the prize. We wonder if this eminently benevolent and gallant individ ual " went home" with each of his lumina ries. If so, it must hays kept him busy. He earned his gift. Tbe Proposed Railroad Bridqe over THE Cl'TAHOGA RESOLUTION OP THE BOARD op Trai.e Co.iceemxo. it. On Wednesday last the following resolution was read at the session of the Board of Trade, discussed and laid on the table : Reached, That inasmuch as a railroad bridge across the Cuyahoga river at some point in the vicinity of the piers, is admit ted a necessity, this Board is of the opinion that the place of crossing proposed in the resolutions of the City Council of the 3d inst, from one to two hundred feet north of Front street (if no pier is constructed in the middle of the river.) is more consistent with the commercial and public interests than at any other prnfhicable location. This resolution was called up last Sattir day and discussed, and its further consider ation postponed till Wednesday of the present week. a Soldiers' Home Report. Fire broke out, about one o'clock this morning, in the humble cabin of Mi chael Clark, near the top of Detroit stree hill, West Side. The family, consisting of six members, awoke just in time to make their escape, with a scant wardrobe. All their effects were burned, " every h'poth," Mr. Clark said. Two steamers from this side ran over, but the building was nearly consumed by the time of their arrival. pf - AMCSEXEttr. A company of boys amused themselves yesterday afternoon on the river, at the expense of favoring wind and tide. Starting from Johnson's Marine Block, in a large yawl, they stood erect on the seats, face lakewards, and developed motive power by a Nautilean device lifting their coat-tails high above their heads, and out spreading them, like fans, for sails. The boat toek the hint and shot up stream at a rapid rate. The juvenile crew would go as far ae Merwin's Block. But they had to rec ognize the stern law of compensation, the dead-sure exactions of which mar all youth ful sports. The boat must be rowed back against wind and tide, and this required muscle. But the tax was paid, and the amusement was kept up all the afternoon. Acatiemt op Mdsic. The engagement of Mis Sallie St Clair and Hr.Chas. Barras at the above attractive place of amusement has so far proved a truly great success. . The second week of their engagement commences this evening with the production of a novel ty for this city, the drama of "Bibio." We have never had the pleasure witnessing this recent addition to dramatic literature, but are informed that it is one of the most pow erful and absorbing dramas npon the stage. It belongs to the sensational school, but of the higher type, and has more of nature anil reality about it than usually belong to its claBB in the drama. We shall have occasion to speak more knowingly of it hereafter. SECOND INNINGS. LOCAL NOTICES. Kewberry Coal. This faTorite Coal after an interval of sxvkn tears is again offered to the public. Financial circles during the part week have exhibited a contrast to the excitement and bustle that characterized them the week previous, and though it cannot be said that any determined reaction occurred, vet there has been a more or less decided break in the strong speculative tide which last week was so invincible. A natural result of so strong a turn as was given to values last week, is to unsettle business, and consequently the pres ent week has been more marked in this re spect than any other. In financinal circles the interest centers at present in the future of the money market, and this is more par ticularly the case in the West. Never per haps in the history of the West was there a more general complaint of stringency in money than exists at present, and the de mand was never stronger. In presence of the vast volume of currency in the country, this state of things could hardly be expected to exist, and but for the speculative course of our merchants, could not exist The cur rency of the West is locked up in produce, which is being carried for higher prices, with what show of obtaining them the wis est are nnable to tell. As a result of this state of things trade languishes in a fever ish and unsettled condition, and the close of navigation, now near at at hand, promises a winter of inactivity to all industrial pur suits, with probably financial ruin to manv of the large number of those whose greed is now prompting them to throw aside their opportunity to realize. In this market mo ney has daily worked closer, and to-day closed more stringent than for a long period in the experience of our banks. Still the demand for loans presses and depositors check down their balances, and no signs of relief are presented. In Chicago and Cin cinnati the same state of things exists, and with the packing season close upon them, there is less promise of relief than is given to us. In the'former city the pressure is so great that bankers have Mt enlled upon to refuse all accommodations to produce men, with a view of forcing shipments of erain East. This policy, which should have be gun long ago, is still not too late to do good, ana ought to be generally adopted. The stringency in currency of course tends to weaken exchange, some of the bank to day refusing to buy better than 1 discount The gsneral rates, however, wore 4 off to par buying and par to i premium selling. The supply of exchange is not large, and the de mand quite liberal. Gold during the past week has Worked steadily downward, and continues weak, in fluenced by the heavy foreign orders for our national and leading railway stocks, which do away with the necessity of specie ship ments for the present, thus promising an increase of cash gold at home. The specie reserve of the Aew York banks is now $13,- 4i,134. Gold closed to-day 1 144j, against 146 last Saturday. Railway stocks have ruled irregular and unsettled during the week, but the advan tage of the market has been with the bulls, the speculation being against them in only few exceptions. Government gold bonds have ruled firm throughout the week, at a considerable advance over last week' clos ing rates. The shipments of five-twenties Europe during the week arc estimated at over $2,009,000. The old issue of five-twenties is scarce. Mercantile circles during the week have been unsettled. In this market business has been only moderate, but prices have been well maintained, and close to dny without decided change from last Saturday. The trade demand for Flour is fair, and the stock continues light. City millers are still be hind their orders. Wheat is irregular, but firm, choice grades being scarce. The de mand is light. Corn and Oats are inactive and nominal. Rye and Barley without re ported movement. : In Provisions and Produce there is no de cided change to note. Prices are firm, and the demadd fair. The Grocery market is active and firm, the only essential change during the week being an advance on refined sugars. Petroleum was steady to-day, and the market closed a shade firmer at quotations. Wool in this market continues very qnict. Nominal quotations are 60 65c for good to fine fleece; 70c for fancy lots do.
