The Alten Mines.
Among the departures for Ari
zona yesterday were Colonel
Charles H. Tozier aud George R.
Gibson, of this city. They Willi be
joined at Los Angeles by Mr.
Waterman, of St. Joseph, Missouri,
a gentleman of influence aud
means, who is about to make an
examination of the Santa Rita
mountains for mining purposes,
and also the valleys adjacent with
tbe view of locating a small agri
cultural colony. Mr. Gibson,
whose ability as an investigator
and financial writer is well knowu
\ to all tbe readers of the Pott, goes
te examine tbe Aztec Syndicate
property in order to report thereon
for Eastern capitalists, while Colo
nel Tozier, whose ability as a min
ing superintendent is everywhere
recognized on this coast, goes to
take charge, as resident manager
of the important enterprises in
augurated by the Syndicate. That
body and Southern Arizona is to
be congratulated on Colonel To
iler's accession to the manage
ment, and a steady development
of the undoubted mineral wealth
of the Sauta Rita may now be
looked for.— S. P. Pott.
Practical Spiritualism.
The latest test of Mrs. Bowers'*
abilities as a seereis took plaoe yes
terday on the Ophir grade. Mrs.
Bower* and C. F. Woeten were
riding along the grade in a buggy,
•bout four mile* from tbe city,
when they overtook a Chinaman
carrying a sack on hi* shoulder.
Mrs. Bowers remarked that seme
spirit influenoe told her that the
Chinaman was a thief, and ih*
thought it would be a good idea to
search him. Accordingly both par
ties got out and stopped tbe Celes
tial. A search revealed that his
sack contained a quantity of
clothes, which they subsequently
ascertained belonged to Cobb A
Place, of Franktown. Mrs. Bowers
held the thief, while Weston tied
him with ropes. He was then
brought into town, and is now in
jail. It would be a good plan for
the county to hire Mrs. Bowers to
act as special detective In similar
cases.— Virginia Chronicle, Jan. 15.
A Man of Truly Liberal Sentiment.
"Coma lv aud have a dhrink,
boys," remarked a well-known
Bulgarian of this city to a
number of friends, with whom he
was chatting iv front of Mai lon's
store, this morning. They
all went lv to the bar and ordered
their drinks. There was a charm
ing uniformity iv the orders—
"A schmall sup o' that whiskey,
Jim," seemed to cover all the
requirements. As they were
about to quaff, oue nf the party
suddenly culled out to another,
■'Hello, Dougherty—you dhriukiu'
whisky ! Sure it was only yes
terday ye towld me yo were a tay-
Utlsr." "Well," said Mr. Dough
erty, evidently somewhat
disconcerted, "You aro right, Mr.
Kelley—it's quite right ye are—l
am a taytotler, it's thru?, hut I-I-
I-m not a bigoted oue "—Virginia
Chronicle.
The Coroner and the Beauman Peel.
As a Coroner was entering a sa
loon to see a mau, be beheld a care
less boy, who was eating a banana,
cast tbe rind of the fruit upon tbe
slippery stone sidewalk, but, in
stead of chiding the urchin, be
smiled and passed on. As be was
coming out of the saloon, having
satisfied his thirst, lie slipped on
tbe peel ofthe banana, and falling,
broke his neck; so that a rival Cor
oner made the fees from tbe in
quest.
Moral—lt is rare sport to see the
Coroner hoist with his own petard.
