A Good Lawyer's ...
Luther Martin waa one of the
most famous lawyers of his time.
He wa* a little above tha medium
height and was slovenly in appear
ance. Hi* dress was a com
pound or tba Una and the coarse,
and seemed never to have felt the
brush. He wore ruffles at the
wrist, richly edged with lace, and
after every one else had abandoned
thorn. These ruffle* were conspi
cuously broad and were always
dirty with tobacco juice. Judge
Taney aald that In hi* speech he
used vulgarisms, and tbat he heard
him say "cotoh" him, instead of
caught blm, and w* "sot" down,
instead of sat down. His genius
was frequently clouded by the ex
cessive use of strong drink. Being
engaged la nn Important case, he
promised bis clients tbe day before
tbe suit was to be tried not to drink
any liquor. He retired to his
room, but could not resist
his desire for stimulants.
He sent for a bottle of brandy
and a loaf of bread, and
after saturating the bread with the
brandy be at* it, and his unfortun
ate appetite was satisfied, and he
claimed he had kept hi* promise
not to drink. He tried tbe cause
in the ablest possible manner, but
on being reproached by hi* clients
for his virtual violation of his
promise, he remarked, " I did net
drink a drop; besides say no more
about it. Had it not been for th*
bread I would have lost tbe case."
He bad a paralytic itroke, and
baring squandered his large earn
ing* at th* bar as fast a* tbey were
acquired, in hi* old ago under the
/ (reading* ef penury, he removed to
New York and received the hospi
talities and kind attention of
Aaron Burr, whom he ably defend
ed at Riohmond. Before his death
the Legislature passed a resolution
that every one on being admitted
te the bar should pay one dollar,
cash for hi* use. He died on July
10, 1826, when he was eighty-two
years of ag*.— Pall Mall Gazette.
Criminal Carolsaness.
Frem tbe following two Heme,
taken from the last number of the
Arizona Sentinel, It would appear
tbat tbe people of Tumi are incon
ceivably indifferent to the- disease
now prevailing in their midst:
Lo* Angeles is properly aroused
by tbe discovery, on Thursday,
tbat tbe porter of the sleeping oar
arriving there tbat day, was a well
developed case of small-pox, of a
mild type. Tbat city, like any
other, bas tbe legal power to com
pletely stop all communication
with Yum*. When she txeroise*
that power Yuma will begin to fled
means for stamping out tbe dis
' ease.
This trouble [small-pox] has not
Improved any during tbe last
week. If anything matter* are a
little worse. Tke weather has been
oold, damp and favorable to con
tinuation of tbe malady. Tbe
Health Officer ha* resigneJ in dis
gust, because he could not enforce
any lanltary regulation*. He re
potted 15 casta recovered, 15 new
case* and no deaths, during the
week preceding his resignation.
Since then one patient bas died.
He was dosed to death witb herb*
and root*. Travel and trade are
/falling off antl will continue to do
so until our people eonolude to su»
tain the authorities in enforcing
sanitary measures. The Sentinel
offloe is almost out of town and
pursues a strict policy of no admit
tance and non-intercouse. But we
are getting weary of so much iso
lation and of keeping our atmos
phere saturated with carbolic acid
and chlorine. Our voice is for vig
orous public measures.
Freight for ...
Tbe following; is a specimen of
letter* which have been received by
many of tbe farmer* in our valley
recently:
Aomor P. C. 8. 8. Co.. 1
Los Angeles, Jan. 21,1878. ,
Dxab Sir:—As our steamers are going
up very light now, wo are in need of freight
tor ballast, and on that account will agree
to take your corn from the B. B, station at
Santa Anna to San Francisco, via our
steamers from Wilmington, ivory fire
days, for $3.75 per 2,000 pounds.
This rate is until further notice. Will
■ thank yon to let me know when you made
your last shipment for this season.
Very truly,
H. Mt Lslla.v, Agent.
Due notice will be given through
the paper* here of the commence
ment and close of tbe ahipping sea
ion, *o tbat our farmer* need not
take tbe trouble nor tbe expense
ef notifying the Steamship Com
pany of that fact. In the next
place the farmers are not so poor a*
to expect or ask any shipping com
pany to ahip their ballast 'free
of charge, as they would virtually
do in case they accepted tbe above
offer, for the charges of tbe railroad
from here to Wilmington alone is
$2.75 per ton. Again, tbe farmers
here have a steamer for wbioh tbey
furnish freight for balastl at fair
living figures. If any time,
however, there should be more
ballast than tbe farmers' steamer
can carry they would not object to
-famishing the Steamship Com
pany with ' some "ballast"
of whloh tbey seem to
stand so much in need. We be
lieve tbat business men should be
patronized so long as they conduct
their affairs oa business principles
end when they fall to do that tbey
ahould be held up to the public iv
their true light. If the steamer
Newport were to stop tunning im
mediately "fujther notice" from
the 8. 8. Co. would be given forth
with. The object of tbis Immense
ly magnanimous offer of tbe
Steamship Company is to crush
the Newport. If tbat should be
accomplished all magnanimity
vould cease and tbe farmers would
* compelled to submit to the ex
orbitant rates charged before the
fewport was put on the line. —
