On Tuesday, tbe sth Inst., a
number of teams could be seen ar
rayed for business on the place of
."Wm. A. McGlbbon, one of Orange's
Xnost estimable citizens. The ex
planation of this is found in tbe
fact tbat Mr. McOibbon has been
quite unwell for some time, and the
igood people proposed a surprise iv
the way of plowing, harrowing,
mud in every way putting to rights
n home that has not been neglect
ed from choice, but from neosssity.

Anaheim Gazette: While visit
ing Mr. Korn, tbe other day, we
•aw a quantity of wine-atone, tbe
substance which, alter being re
filled and pulvetized, is found in
drug stores under tbe name of
cream of tartar. This wine-stone
become* incrusted on casks which
contain new wine. In Germany
there are numerous dealers who
go from vineyard to vineyard
and purchase tbe wine-stone,
themselves scraping it off the
casks with knives specially design
ed for that purpose. In this couu
try, however, the market is so
limited that wine growers havo
,_naid no attention towards collect
ing it. Lately, however, there
have been offers made for its pur
chase, and it is probable that in
tbe "sweet bye aud bye" vineyard
istswill fiud in tha wlne-stono an
additional source of revenue.
Last night, as Messrs. Adams
and Russbll were starting back
from tha wharf with a lighter load
of passengers, it was discovered
that tbe surf line bad been severed
at the shore end. This is tbe third
time under similar circumstances
that this dirty trick has beeu dove,
and the performer deserves to be
dragged by his heels through the
mud of State street, if ever de
tected. In rough weather such a
thing might easily be the cause of
the drowning of the passengerß in
the lighter, and in viow of that
fact the villain might better have
the rope around his neck than his
heels.— Sattta Barbara Press.
