Salmon for the Colorado.
Stocking the Colorado river with
fish is a matter that is now re
ceiving some attention, At pres
ent there is but ono variety here
that has much value for the table.
It is locally known a. tbe "Colo
rado salmou," though it appears
to have no peculiarities iv com
mon with that noble fish. It grows
to great size, thirty pounds not
being an uncommon weight. Its
flesh is tolerably frees from small
bones, and, during the winter
months, reasonably firm. Theother
varieties are small, bony and
of muddy flavor. The temperature
of the water is an important con
sideration in selecting the proper
varieties of fish for stocking the
Colorado. To determine this fact,
the railroad company are causing
daily record to be made of the tem
perature of the river, and these ob
servations will be continued
throughout the Summer. An ap
paratus for this purpose was
Drought down here by Mr. J. It.
Scupham, who seems to be running
tbe botanical and zoological depart
ments of the Southern Pacific Rail
road Company. It is under his su
pervision that the company Is
planting an immense number of
eucalyptus trees along .arious parts
of its road. He has also taken much
Interest in stocking streams along
the road with new varieties of fish.
It may be objected that the waters
of the Colorado are too muddy for
salmon, and that our climate is too
warm. But we call attention to the
Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers
of California, both of which
abound in salmon at tho proper
season. These rivers are just as
muddy as the Colorado, if not more
ho; and the Summer temperature of
their valleys scores equally high on
the thermometer. Just now there
seems to be no good reason for pre
dicting failure of experiments in
this direction, while there does
seem to be every indication of their
success.— Yuma Sentinel.
