Home Industry.
[From the Santa Monies Outlook ]
Every oue who takes an interest
in tbe true development and up
building of Southern California,
must feel highly gratified at the
steps now being taken to encour
age all of our home industries. Its
importance has been slowly com
prehended by our people; but it
now seems as if they were begin
ning to have some adequate idea of
this most vital of all questions.
Whether tbe movement on the
part of our people will end in mere
talk, or be crystatized in the form
of important industrial enterprises,
remains to be seen. But It is evi
dent they are now on the right
track. The subjeot is being agi
tated, aud the most influential,
substantial citizens are manifesting
an interest. And it is proper to say
that this interest is exhibited in a
perfectly legitimate way.
A meeting was hold in Los An
geles last Saturday night at which
time an organization was effected
and an address adopted setting forth
a plan to place the movement In
political operation throughout this
county. But, as a cotemporary re
marks, "the programme is flexible
enough to take in all Southern Cali
fornia." The pledge of the move
ment is simple and comprehensive.
It reads:
"We, the undersigned, hereby
agree and pledge ourselves to pur
chase and consume all articles pro
duced or manufactured at home, in
preference to those imported from
abroad; to encourage the consump
tion ot home productions; to aid in
building up our manufacturing,
producing and agricultural Inter
ests; to encourage the Importation
of coin and the exportation of our
borne products?'.
Just think how varied our indus
tries would be if they were all put
Into active operation. Let's take a
"bird's-eye view" of them:
1. Grain growing:
a. Flouring mills;
b. Starch lactones.
2. Fruit growing:
a, Alden works;
b. Canneries.
3. Grape growing:
n. Brandy aud wine;
b. Cooperage.
4. Stock raising:
a. Pork packing;
b. Tanneries;
'•. Boot and shoe factories;
01. Saddle and harness factories;
i . QLae factories;
f. Candle aud Boap factories;
0. Woolon mills;
7i. Salt works;
1. Butter and cheese.
6. Lumbering:
a. Sash, do r and blind factories;
b. Match luctorils;
C t Box factories.
(i. Petroleum:
a. Burning aud lubricating oils.
7. Asphaltura:
a. Rootling and pavements.
There are mauy other industries
which do uot now occur to our
mind. The abovo is only a,n imper
fect skeleton.
At a glance it will be seen that
there is no lack of material upon
which to found a vast system of In
dustries. The only thing lucking is
the determination on tlie part of
our people to take hold with a
hearty good will. Some of these
establishments cau only be started
on a small scale. Hut that should
not cause them to be entirely ig
nored.
Now that too public mind is stir
red upon tlio importance of home
matter*, we hope all will give the
subject tho most serious thought.
We have no fear as to the conclu
sion that will bo reached. All must
see that the true way to prosper is
to help one another, it' a home
product cau be obtained as cheaply
as an imported article, we ask, in
the name of common prudence,
why not give it tlie preference? It
will keep the money in our midst,
and atimutate further development,
whereas the opposite course will
send away our money, and cause
the few industries we have to lan
guish, and perhaps die.
There is no necessity for an or
ganization that is to occupy time
and expense. A simple determina
tion—or pledge if thought best—to
give home productions the prefer
ence, is all that is needed. The
principal danger is to be appre
hended from a few (men of means
generally) who are agents for some
large outside establishments. They
invariably try to crush out all in
cipient enterprises that clash with
theirs, by selling for a Bhort lime at
losing prices. Then, as soon as the
opposition is crushed, the prices are
raised—sometimes to figures even
higher than at lirst.
Southern California, at no dis
tant day, will be'.ome a separate
State. It is now a good time,
while the people are interested, to
make an effort to draw a Hue of
demarcation. Lot us rally as one
people around a common interest;
join hands upon industrial devel
opment; become self-supporting.
No section ia more capable of being
independent of outside help than
this; and yet the unpleasant truth
stares us iv the face that none are
more dependent.

FOR ITSELF.
UofKPORT, Mass., April 2,1577.
MR, Editok:—Having read in your pa
per reports of the remarkable cures ol ca
tarrh. I am induced to toll " what I know
about catarrh," and I fancy the "snufl "
and "inhaling tube" makers (mere dol
lar grabbers) would DO glad If they could
emblazon a similar cure in the papers.
For 20 years 1 sutlered with catarrh. The
nasal passages became completely closed.
■ "Snufl," "dust," "ashes," "inhaling
tubes," and "sticks" wouldn't work,
though at intervals 1 would inlfl up the
so-called catarrh snufl, uutil I became a
valuable tester for such medicines. 1
gradually grow worse, and n 3 one can
know how much I sutlered or what a
miserable being 1 was. My head ached
- over my eyes until 1 was confined to my
bed for many successive days, suffering
the most intense pain, which at one time
lasted continuously for ItiS hours. All
sense ol smell and taste goue, sight and
hearing impaired, body shrunk on
aud weakened nervous system shat
tered and constitution broken, and 1 was
hawking and spitting seven-eighths of the
time. 1 prayed lor death to relieve me of
niv suffering. A favorable notice in your
paper ol Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy in
duced me to purchase a package ami use
it with Dr. Pierces Nasal Douche, which
applies tlie remedy by hydrostatic pres
. lure, the only way compatible with com
mon sense. Well, Mr. Editor, it did not
' cure me In three-iourths of a second, nor
i la one hour or month, but in less than
eight minutes I was relieved, aud in
three mouths entirely cured, aud have
remalued so over sixteen months. While
using tho Catarrh remedy, I used Dr.
Pierces Golden Medical Discovery to pu
rify my blood and strengthen my stom
ach. I also kept my liver active and
bowels regular by the use of his Pleasant
) Purgative Pellets. If my experience will
induce other sufferers to seek thesame
means of relief, this letter will have an
swered its purpose.
Yours :ruly, 8. D. RE MICK.
