San Francisco May 1 —Last
Sunday afternoon when tbo last
steamer laden with Irishmen was i
steaming down the bay on her trip
from tlie picnic of the Knights of
tlie lied Branch, and when just op- j
posite the Russian Corvette, the
Irish national flag was run ulolt, !
Ihe baud struck up the Russian na
tional anthem and tho warlike pic
nickers lustily cheered. Quite un
expectedly, the Russian uiau-of
war instantly returned the salute
with rigorous courtesy as if it
had been offered by a flagship
of tho allied navies of the world.
It dipped tho Russian flag aud fired
a salule of twenty-one guns, aud
tbo whole crew of the Corvette
rushed lo the side and heartily
cheered the Irish Hag and the Irish
men under it. Ihe Irishmen on
their part fairly cracked their
threats with the savage earnestness
of their counter cbeert.

San Francisco, May 1 —The
officers of the Russian corvette

absurd the statement that the Irish
flag was saluted by their vessel
with twenty-one guns Sunday last.
The facts of the case,
according to their statement,
aro that the corvetlo was
firing a snluto iv honor of
Faster Suuduy, which by tho Rus
sian calendar comes one woek later
than with us. The ferry steamer
Willi Ihe Irish excursionists on

the compliment by dipping her own
ensign, which is no mote than is
customary in reply to such colli'-J
tesits from any craft.
