The McCrackln mill turned out nearly $83,000 In silver barsduring the month of May, ranging in flue nt ss from 915 to 900. Arrived at San Pedro, June 18th, ship Re-Union, Curtis master, from Departure Ray, with 1,700 tons of coal for the S. P. R. R. Company. Sheriff Mitchell informs us that, in searching among tlie oi l papers ln his office, no less than four war rants for the arrest of the deceased desperado Sotelo were unearthed. Sotelo bore a marked r-sem blance to the brigand Vnsijuez in form and face. Vasquez had higher and broader cheek bones and a more straggling beard, but in other respects tbey might have hern twin brothers. A Chinaman was arrested by officer Sands yesterday for burg lariously entering a room at tlie St. Charles Hotel and stealing a coat. He will be examined before Judge Peel to-day. The Presbyterian Sunday School will picnic at Oak Orove, near Pas adena, next Saturday. The merry makers will assemble in front of Good Templars' Hall at 10 o'clock A. Lankershim & Van Nuys arrived by rail from San Francisco on Mon day. Mr. Clements, under vhose supervision it will be placed in po sition, came down on the Orizaba on Sunday. It was reported that, in the raffia for the rawhide yesterday, Judge Peel's name was set opposite the winning number. The raflle was gotten up to raise the funds to pay the fine imposed on the irate mother in-law, whose adventures we described yesterday. We learn from the Courrier de Loa Angeles, of Ilie ISth iust , that the French Mutual B ■nocolent S >■ ciety, when the accounts are ail audited, will probably clear $300 by their receut picnic at tlie Arroyo Seco. This Is said to bo a larger sum than ever before realized by any Society from a similar enter tainment. The pursuit aud capture of Sotelo by Sheriff Mitchell and Deputy Sheriff Celis reoall the days of Vas .(ucz and Chavez most forcibly. We doubt if there is, iv the length and breadth of California, a sher iff's office so thoroughly appointed for exploits of this kind as Sheriff Mitchell's. When that Indomita ble official and his handy arrest Deputy start for a man, he wi II bo more than mortal if he Is not brought in, dead or alive. There are two I linrt-hand report ers running for delegates to the Constitutional Convention—Chas. A. Sumner, on the straight Demo cratic ticket for the First Congres sional District and J. A. Wayineier, for delegate at large on the auti- Kearuey ticket. Wayineier was at one time phonographlo reporter for the Supreme Court aud is vow prac ticing law In San Francisco. Sum ner is the present phonographic reporter of the Supreme Court. Between 200 and 300 people were present at the final rally of tbe Workingmen, iv front of Temple Block, last night. The meeting was orguuized by the election of Dr. Luppo as Chairman. Speeches were made by Major Klnley and Messrs. Page, Bunch, Pitt, Thomp son, Hughes aud MeQee. Between the speeches some very sweet mu sic was discoursed by Professor Conteruo's brass band. The meet ing adjourued about 11 o'clock. We know that Ihe Good Temp lars of Los Angeles will bo lilghly gratifjed at tbe following intelli gence, which we clip from tbe Florence, Arizona Citizen of the 14th: The temperance workers of Los Angeles are erecting a hall at a cost of $13,000, which is almost completed. They gave a grand musical festival last week for the benefit of this building, which was a musical success. The financial report gives tbe net proceeds somo where in tbe vicinity of $800. So it is said. The Express, speaking of Sotelc, says; A curious fact iv the despera do's geneolgy has beeu brought out, called to mind doubtless by his un timely death. In 1772 two dis charged Spanish soldiers living at the Mission near Yuma with their wives, were surprised by a hand of hostile Yuma Apauhes. The wonie:) were carried off and remained in the bauds of the savages several months. By a turn in the fortunes of war, the poor creatures were tbeu returned to their white friends, and one was found to be enoeinte. In due time she gave birth to a half breed child, and this was the stock from which Miguel Sotelo sprung. "They all do it." It's floating about in the air. First tv*> old gentlemen—lawyers—fell to fisti cuffs about fees. Then there's a dazzling movement of cow-hides in tho near neighborhood of a de voted son-in-law. Then even the Chinawomen take to "bull-dozing" their husbands. Tbe scene is shifted to tbe Verdugo cafion and pistol balls whiz in the air. Then there is a clash of jurisdiction be tween an assignee and the Sheriff's office and locks are forcibly broken open. There is a sniff of villainous saltpetre in the atmosphere, and we don't know who will next be up to his arm pits in war and trouble. Is this tlie first note of Summer? Let us hope that the election to-day will act as a safety valve lo the pent up caloric. Rut then, as the ladies don't vote, some relief will have to be provided for them. Attention li directed to the ad vertisement of Mr. John Carlin, insurance agent, uuder New To- Day. Mr. Carliuhas a number of Ihe best companies doing business In the State on his list, notably the Imperial of London, Northern of Loudon, Queen of Liverpool, from which joint policies will be Is sued. We have beeu thowna letter from the home office of those com panies, which says that the agency of the London Assurance Corporation w ill shortly be trans ferred to San Francisco, where joint-policies will be Issued for the three companies. "Tho London be ing not only one of the oldest but wealthiest companies in the world, the new policy will furnish an in demnity unequalled by any other in existence," says the letter. Deputy Sheriff Ling, notwith standing the fact that the agent of Kane & O'Leary, assignees of TomScally, locked the door in his face when he went to sclza Scally'a effects yesterday, on au attach ment filed by Duller & Bradley, was equal to the emergency. In stead of blustering, us the large crowd who were assembled evi dently expected him to do, he qui etly bled him to a locksmith's and procuring the services of that artisan, with the necessary tools, he returned to have the door opened suientillcally, but just as op erations were commenced on the outside the bolt was withdrawn from within, when he entered and took possession of the goods with out further obstruction. Miguel Sotelo, a full account of whose capture by Sheriff Mitchell and Deputy Sheriff Adolfo Celis, was given in yesterday's Herald, died at the Sisters' Hospital about three o'clock yesterday morning. An Inqucßt was held by Coroner Hannon at the undertaking rooms of E. Neitzke <fc Co., which elic ited tlie following testimony and verdict: Inquest On tlie body of Miguel Sotello held in Los Angeles, June 18th, 1878, before J. Hannon, Coroner: H. M. Mitchell, SherifTofLos Angeles County, sworn: This is a bench warrant [showing it] for Miguel Sotello, the man lying here dead. It was issued by the County Court ou a charge of grand larceny March 25th, 1876. Ever since that time the Sheriff's ofllce has been on the watch for him. He was very bard to And, being active and continually on tbe move from place to place. Last evening, about six o'clock, myself and officer Celis, hearing tbat Sotello would be In Verdugo cafion, went out there to arrest him. We went near the bar room at the foot of the cafion and there saw a man ou horseback and another horse saddled, but nobody mounted upon iiim. I went up near tho house and when thirty steps distant Mig uel, the deceased, started off full run and commenced firing at me. I told him I was the Sheriff and called on him to stop firing at me; that I had a warrant for him. I pursued, firing at him with a pistol which Celis handed me. Miguel fired six shots and then drew an other revolver. I had fired four shots at him when he had fired six, He fired altogether ten shots. Cells fired fourteen shots. I fired six al together. I did not draw on him until after he bad fired two or three sliots. [Sotelo'a second pistol, one of the old dragoon pattern, was shown, with two shots remaining in it. The first, tho Sheriff stated, had been lost iv the brush during the flight.] The last three shots, from Cello's gun, my pistol and Miguel's pistol, were almost simultaneous. Could not tell which one took effect In Sotelo first. I asked the deceased if lie knew who shot him, and he said he could not tell. He lived until some time this morning. I bandaged his wounds and had bim brought to the hospital, when the doctor pronounced bis woundsfatal. Neither Celis nor myself fired at him after he had fallen from bis horse. We did not tire at him until after lie had first shot at us two or three times. H. M. Mitchell. Adolph Celis, deputy Sheriff of Los Angeles county, sworn: Yes terday about noon I made arrange ments to go with tbe Sheriff after Miguel Sotello (tho deceased), learn ing that he was at Verdugo cafion. At tbe saloon at the foot of the cafion we saw one man on horse back on the outside and a horse with saddle, but nobody on it. I went up close by to find out who the man was, but could uot Identify iiim. I then asked the Major to go up to him as Miguel would not ktiow him. As soon as the Major started towards him he turned his horse and ran to the right through a cienega. When the Major bad fol lowed him 200 or 300 yards, Miguel turned aud fired at him. I called out to the Major, and said, "That's bim; shoot him; shoot him." After we had fired back and forth some 1 time, still running, Miguel reeled and fell from his saddle. Tho Ma jor couliuued in pursuit of the horse 1 while I remained to look after tbe wounded man. I saw he was badly hurt, and called to tbe Major tocomo back, that he was dying. Have known the deceased ten or twelve years. His full name is Miguel Lugo Sotelo. He has al ways been kuown as a bad man. He served one sentence of five years in the State Prison. Has been out now five or six years. Have heard frequently that he was a member of the Vasquez gang. Has been in company for a week or more with Touias Uedoudo, alias "Prooopio," wbo recently killed a Deputy Sheriff up tbe country. I know positively that the deceased is the man for whom the bench warrant was issued. Adolfo Celis. After Coroner I-latinou had ex hibited the wound in tlie body of the deceased aud probed it, pro nouncing it the cause of death, the Jury took the matter under couald* eratioa and rendered the following verdict: inquisition by coroner's jury. State of California, \ County of Los Angeles. J In the Matter of the Inquisition upon the body of Miguel Sotelo, alias Miguel Lugo, deceased. Before J. Hannon, Coroner.
