A Reporter on the Shoot
[From ths Ban Jo»a Mercury, July 11]
At 7 o'clock last evening 8. W.
Da Laoey, looal editor of tbeji/er
ald, met Dr. C. P. V. Watson in
front of the I. X. L. store, and de-1
manded an explanation regarding'
certain defamatory epithets which
DeLacy alleged had been applied to
him by Watson. The latter on be
ing informed as to tbe precise na
ture of the language used
Admitted that he had said
•▼en worse, whereupon De Lacy
drew a pistol and fl red. The bullet
fortunately missed Its mark and
entered tbe I. X. L. tin sign, about
three and one-half feet from the
ground. Watson claims that he
Blade no aggressive movement,
bat was standing quietly with his
hands by his side when the shot
was fired. Iv this he Is corrob
orated by au employe" of the I. X.
li., who says that De Lacy tired
without provocation.
After the bullet had been dis
charged, De Lacy walked down to
the City Hall aud gave himself up.
A complaint was sworn out by
officer Jores charging him with
assault with a deadly weapon with
Intent to do great bodily injury,
and on being arraigned, the ex
amination was set for Friday at 4
p. m." Defendant was admit
ted to ball in tbe sum of $800,
with J. K. Hall and Thomas Wynn
as sureties. De Lacy's statement
is to the effect that having heard
from several sources that Watson
had been defaming his character
and mnkhig threats of personal vio
lence, bo met him as stated and
asked if the reports were true.
Watson admitted having uttered
even worse sentiments than im
puted, and on being asked to repeat
tbem to his (De Lacy's) face, he
stepped forward as if to strike or
shoot, whereupon De Lacy fired
with tbe intention, not of killing
him, but of shootlug him through
the leg.
The whole difficulty grew out o
cci tain statements made by DeLacj
in the Herald regarding the orim
Sna! proceedings instituted agains
Dr. Watson, which reflected some
what upon the Doctor's character
Eclipse of the Sun.
As might ho expected, great
interest is being taken in scientific
circles iv the total solar eclipse,
which will occur on the 20th iu
stant, ami although the obscura
tlou will not be visible lv Los An
geles, there will be much in the
event lo engage the local mind.
The last eclipse of the kind took
place in 1869, aud was fully ob
served. This time the dark shad
ow of the moon will first strike the
earth in Siberia, and crossing llehr-
Ings straits, the line of to
tality—which will cover a space
about 110 miles wide—will
strike the United Stales about
48:40 latitude, uud 117:55
longitude, aud, moving in a south
east direction, will sweep over the
Yellowstone park, through Wyo
ming Territory, Denver, Colorado,
northern and eastern Texas', aud
entering tho gulf of Mexico be
tween New Oilean9 and Galveston,
will cross the islands of Cuba aud
San Domingo, and then leave the
earth.
This side of the Rocky mount tins
the path of totality will take in
FortColville, Washington Terr,
toryj Virginia City, Fort Ellis
Missoula and Bozetnan, Montana ;
and near the path of totality will
be Fort Hall and Fort Lapwai,
Idaho; Fort Shaw and Camp
Baker, Moutana. Congress having
appropriated $8,000-to allow of
the eolipse beiug thoroughly ob
served, the best possible prepara
tions for the purpose are being
made by distinguished scientists.
Five parties will be sent out from
tbe Naval Observatory uuder the
command of tlie professors of
mathematics In tbe navy. Tliey
will ba assisted by four officials of
the line, selected and detailed for
the service localise of their recog

Murphy Criticized.
Francis Murphy Is the subject ol
severe criticism becausp, when
asked to participate iv a Temper
ance revival at New Haven, he of
fered to go " for $150 per week and
best b:>anl, for Christ's sake." Tlie
text of his letter was published,
and some over sanguine friend,
doubting that be had penned
it, asked him. This is bis
response: "I did write lhat New
Haven letter. I generally get
$200, but they are poor down that
way. Yours in Jesus, Frsncis Mur
phy." The Ohio State Journal says
that, "Perhaps It would be in bet
ter taste for Mr. Murphy to sepa
rate from his mercenary corres
poiiilenne some of the set phrases
of religious writing and pjieaking,
but tbe newspapers have no right
to expect him to work
for nothing, oven in the cause
of temperance. One hundred and
fl/ty dollars a week, however, is
more thau Murphy is worth. He
ought to get down to a hard times
basis, and then divest himself of
cant.'High-priced 9tarshave nearly
ruined the theatrical business, and
the fancy figures of Temperance
lecturers may relegate the commu
nity back to the flowing bowl in
disgust."
Rev. L. A. Smith and his son-in
law, while bathing iv lhe ocean, a
short distance beyond Wilmington,
noticed something being borne in
lv shore. It proved to be a human
hund. Iv a short time another
hand was washed ashore. Though
watched fur some time tbe sea re
fused to give up any more of its
dread secret. Tlie hands had tho
appearance of having been torn
from the body, and they were rev
erently bui ied. —Downey Courier.

We make ths following; extract
from a correspondence In Thurs
day's Bulletin, dated at this place,
July 15th. It Is a fair review of tha
crop prospect In such portions of
the county as tbe writer has visited:
The farmers of this county are
two or three weeks ahead of iheir
brethren of the San Joaquin Val
ley in the matter of gathering their
crops. All the grain iv this region
is cut and nearly all of it in stack.
Considerable progress has been
made on some of the ranches in
thrashing, and others are waiting
their turn, as tbe thrashing is gen
erally done with slcam machines,
each of which turns out from 51HI
to 1,000 sacks a day. One machine
in this way sometimes does the
work of a whole neighborhood. The
grain sown hero wa* mostly barley,
a fortunate circumstauce, since
nearly all the wheat Is blasted with
rust. Two kinds of wheat, the So
uora and the Egyptian, yield a
partial return, but hundreds of
acres of other kinds are left stand
ing, as it will not pay to harvest.
The straw ts large and but for the
rust would have turned off forty or
fifty bushels to the acre. The Sono
ra and Egyptian varieties are earll
ller, and tho beads were well tilled
before struck by tbe run. The far
mers vie admonished ut tbe result
tosow only the earlier varieties. But
wheat is never by any means a
sure crop in thiscounty. Complaint
is also quite general that the crop
of barley Is uot so bountiful as was
expected. While the growth was
very large, the grain lines not turn
out well in thrashing. It was to
lodged that headers had to be dis
pensed with, and the crops gather
ed by reapers aud mowers. Iv many
oases uot more than half the prom
ised outcome will be realized.
Where in April and May, 20 to 30
sacks to the acre were confidently
expected, farmers are get
ting no more than 10
or 15, aud had they relied upon
the method of heading their grain,
not half the latter amount would
have been gathered. As it is, the
farmers generally do not expect to
get out more than even, and many
of them will not market enough to
pay expenses on tbls year's work;
but the next year's crup on the
same ground will Lie volunteer, and
while much less expensive, will
probably prove much better in its
result. Owing to the drouth of last
year all the present crop WM sown
and most of the ground plowed or
thoroughly cultivated. It is to be
remarked that as a rule those who
took the least pains iv putting iv
their grain are best rewarded.
Where tlie ground was only
scratched or harrowed the gralu
stood up belter, and I think is bet
ter filled aud is brighter and more
marketable. Tbere are places here
where four years of good volunteer
gralu have followed from one sow
ing, and if such should result from
tbe sowing of last Fall the larmers
will come out well enough, alter
all.
Corn in this region looks well,
but most of I lie bean fields I have
seen have beeu attacked by some
insect and look shriveled. The
yield will be but small, and will
haidly pay to gather. Other vege
tables liiok flue, anil (he fruit crop
will be nmple. Hay, which is
made here from alfulfa and from
grain cut before ripe, is, of course,
excellent and abundant, and I havo
never seen stock look better in any
oountry.
The soil is unexampled for rich
ness, and on tho low lands and ou
lands upon which water can be
brought a large growth of anything
planted is assured.

Judge Choate, of New York, re
cently decided that a Chinauian
cannot he naturalized uuder the
laws of the United States. The ap
plication was made by a Chinaman
known as Charles Miller, who has
lived in New York for twenty
eight years. Judge Choate was
guided hy the decision of Judge
Sawyer, of California, in the Ah
Yup case, who held that there are
two questions to be determined:
"What is meant by a white per
son? Is a person of tlie Mongolian
race a white person?" To that the
Court answered that a Mongolian
is not a white person. "Are those
persous excluded who are not either
' white persons or negroes?" To that
the Court answered "Yes." Judge
Sawyer concluded tlint the Ctniti
tutioual Amendment that admitted
the African race did not admit any
other than white races.
