SPENCER GROWS SANAUINARY.
Ht Predicts tbe Ouitlng of Hayee, eaJ Ten
Tears of Oirll War.
tDeadffood Correepon.lenei.' of Chicago
Tribune.)
Senator Spencer, of Alabama, Is
coming to live In Dakota. He bas
already mining Interests and Boon
will have a large tract of wbeat
land. It la suspected tbat he has
political designs on us. He passed
through here tbe other day, witb
the Hon. T. C Piatt, of New York.
They have mutual quarfz interests
about Deadwood. lv an interview
on political matters, Spencer let
himself out as follows. His char
acterization of Judge Bennett will
bringdown more than one brick.
This is not Alabama;
" What do you think, Sena
tor, of Judge Bennett, the Repub
lican oandldate for Congress?"
"He is corrupt, dishonest, a
Pharisee, and a fraud."
"Then you can't support him?''
"No, sir, I could uot."
"What's the use in electing a
Republican, anyhow?"
'•There la no earthly use in elect
ing a Republican. Tbe next Con
gress, House and Senate both, w>ll
be two-thirds Democratic, and a
Republican delegate oould have no
weight or Influence in shaping tbe
legislation tbat Dakota might need
or want."
"What do you suppose will be
the upshot of such a Democratic
triumph as you predict?"
"I believe in December, 1879, tbe
Democrats of the Senate will elect
a Democratio President pro tern.
Then tbe House and Senate joint
ly, will declare that Hayes was nev
•r elected President, and refuse to
recognize him. Then the Presi
deutof the Seuate pro tern. will be
sworn in as President, and Con
gress will act with him, ignoring
Hayes and Wheeler. They will
justify their course by citiug the
JEvarts' letter of instruction to the
visiting statesmen of Louisiana.
Next will follow confusion con
founded, and a war that will last
ten years. Tbe mistake that the
present Senate made wus in con
firming the present Cabinet. It
abould have iusisted on surround
ing the President by Republicans
of national reputation, and thereby
have avoided the evil counsels that
have prevailed."

LITERARY.
SUN FOR 1879.
THE SUN will be printed every day
during the year to come, ltd purpose and
method will bo tbe same as in tho past:
To present all the newa in a real able
shape, and to tell the tiuth though the
heavens fall.
THE SUN had been, if, and will con
tinue to b=* independent of everybody and
everything rave the Truth aud its own
conviction* of duty. That is the policy
which has won for this newspaper the con
fidence and friendship of a wider constitu
ency than was ever enjoyed by any other
American Journal.
THE BUN is tke newspaper for the peo
ple. It is not for the rich man ag-umd
the poor mau, or for the poor man against
the rich man, but it seeks to do equal jus
tice to all classes in the comruuniiv. It is
not the organ of any person, class*, sect or
party. Tncro need be no myaterv about
its loves and hates. It is for the honest
man against the rogues ( very time. It is
for the honest Democrat as agaiust tbe
dishouest Republican, and for tbe honest
Republican as against tho diahonost Dem
ocrat. It does not take its cue from the
utterances of any politician or political or
ganization. It gives its support unreserv
edly when men or measures are iv agree
ment with tho Constitution and witb the
ftrinciples upon which this Republic was
ounded for the people. Whenever tho
Constitution and constitutional principles
are violated—as iv the outrageous conspir
acy of 187G, by which a man not elected
was placed in the President's orhce, wbero
he still remains—it speaks out for the
right. That is THE SUN'S idea of inde
pendence. In this respect there will be no
change in its programme for 1879.
THE SUN has fairly earned the hearty
hatred of rascals, frauds and humbugs of
all sort-* ami sizes. It hopes to deserve
that hi red not loss in the yiar 187'J than
iv 187 d, 1877, or any year pone by. THE
HUN will continue to shine oa the wicked
with unmitigated brigbtne.-s.
Whilst the lessons of the past t-hould be
constantly kept before tho poople, 'illE
SUN does not propose to make itstlf in
187 i) a magazine of ancient history, it is
printed for the men an I lemon of to-day,
whine concern is ehh ily with the affairs of
to-day. It bas both the dispodtion and
the ability to aflord its readers the prompt
est, fullest aud most accura c intelligence
of wha'evir in the wide wi rid U Worth at
tention. To this <nd the resources belong
ing to well-establishtd prosperity wi I be
liberally employed.
The present disjointed condition of par
ties iv tbisfcouiitry and the uncertainty of
the future lend an extraordinary signifi
cance to the tvcnls of tho coming year.
The discussions of the press, tho debates
and acts of Congress, and tho movoments
of the leader* iv every section of tho 11c
public, will have a direct hearing on the
Piesidoutial oluctiou of 1880—an event
which must be regarded with the most
anxious interest by every patriotic Amer
ican, whatever his po)it : cIl idea* or alle
giance. To these elements of interest may
bo added the probability fiat the Demo
crats will control l>oth houses of Congress,
the increasing feebleness of tho fraudulent
Administration, and tke spread and
strengthening everywhere of a healthy ab
horrence or frand i v any form. To pre
sent witb accuracy and clearness tbe exact
situation in each of its varying phases, and
to expound, according to its well-known
methods, tho principles that should guide
v* through the labyrinth, will be an im
portant part ot THE SUM'S work for 18W.
We have the means of making THE
SUN, as a 1 terary, * political and a gen
eral new«pai>er, more entertaining and
more useful than over btfore; and wo
mean to apply them freely.
Our rates of subscription remain un
