sCos Angeles _m.iUl. DANIEL WEBSTER'S WIFE. BfW a lsporter Found Her is a Sabmau TtW»—"BtUl Stately in Her Old Age." A dainty blue cape with flutter ing ribboM, worn by a white balred woman, caught the eye of the reporter yesterday as he was pass ing the broad portico ot the Leroy mansion In New Rochslle, ou tbe Sound. Borne thing In tbe faoe be neath the cap arrested attention. Bright hazel eyes contrasted strangely with the snowy ringlets of hair and the pale, almost ex pressionless oast of features. Evl dencee were not wantlngof advanc eadge, yet a graceful form, slightly above tbe medium height, made the possessor look stately in her old age. "Who is that queenly old lady?" was asked of a gardener working eloee by. " Mrs. Webster, sir; the widow ol Daniel Webster." The widow of Webster ! Seated alone at the age ot 78, within twenty miles of the great metropolis, a link between the busy present and /the dead historic past. " Can you oblige me with an in troduction, sir ?" asked the reporter of William Leroy, who at that moment appeared on the ground. "With great pleasure. Mrs. Webster is my' only sister," re turned the proprietor. "But," be added, "I am afraid she cannot converse much. Her mental facul ties are so impaired that she is hardly cognizant of her surround ings, while the past is a total blank." The reporter was presented to the lady, who received him with court ly grace. Chairs were provided on the elegant little piazza, and a pleasant half hour was spent in con venation. "I am so glad you have come," was aire. Webster's first remark. "I know you admire flowers. Are they not pretty? Miss Woolbert has such a delightful little place, too; the prospeot from my wiudow would be better than this if tbere were not so many flowers." "Do you read much now, Mis. Webster?" queried the reporter. Tbere waa no answer to tbls ques tion, but simply a puzzled look. She turned appealingly to her rel ative. The question was reiterated by Mr. Leroy, who at tbe same time picked up a newspaper from tbe floor. Then a look of intelligence lighted up the troubled face as she exclaimed: "Oh, yes; I read it through nearly every day." Caroline Leroy, the second wife of Webster, waa married to the great expounder In tbe oity of New York early iv 1847, and was con stantly with him until bis death, on October 23d, 18.52. Mr. William Leroy and a brother, living in Newport, L. I , are the only re maining members of the family.— IV. Y. Star, October Wh. WANTS—LOST—FOUND. ~~ WANTED. = Parties to engage in light work.
