Work Commenced on the Salt Lake Road IT WILL BE PUSHED AHEAD, A New Academy to be Built at Ba mona—Other Local Events of Interest. Active work on the Suit Lake road was commenced yesterday morning, a corps of surveyors in charge of Chief Engineer Dairies being pnt to work stak ing out the lines on the east side of the river. The representatives of the road in this city say that now a start has been made there will be no cessation until the work is completed. The attempt by a morning contempor ary to show that the company is not en titled to hold its articles of incorporation on account of certain alleged discrep ancies is ridiculed by the officers of the company. Colonel Marble, speaking of the matter to a Herald man yesterday, taid: "The articles of incorpora siou were drawn up under the direction of Colonel Houghton of the firm of Messrs. Houghton, Silent & Campbell, and we placed every re liance in his capabilities. This looks as if he did his work all right, does it not?" queried the Colonel, as he handed to the reporter for inspection a formidable looking red-sealed document. It read as follows: "State Departhekt. "I, William C. Hendricks, Secretary of State of the State of California, do hereby certify that a copy of the articles of incorporation of the Los Angeles, Utah and Atlantic Railroad Company, certified by the County Clerk of the county of Los Angeles as a copy of such articles filed in his office, was filed in this office on the 15th day of November, 1888, which articles and the copy thereof contained the required statement of facts, to-wit: First, the name of the corporation as aforesaid; second, the purpose for which it is formed; third, the place where its principal business is to be transacted; fourth, the term for which it is to exist; fifth, the number of its directors or trustees and the names and residences of those who are appointed for the first year; sixth, the amount of its capital stock and the number of shares into which it is divided. Seventh, the amount of its capital stock actually subscribed and by whom and also state the kind of railroad intended to be connected; the point from and to which it is intended to run and a!! the inf ermpdiata branches and the estimated length of said railroad, and I do hereby further certify that there has been filed in this office an affidavit of the Treasurer named in the articles; that the required amount of the capital stock thereof has been actually subscribed and 10 per cent, thereof actually paid to a Treasurer for the benefit of the corpora tion. "Witness my hand and the Great Seal of State at my office in Sacramento, Cali fornia, this the 15th day of November, A.D. 1888. W. C. Hendricks, Secretary of State. [The Great Seal of the State of California. ] It is well known that Mr. Hendricks is one of the most careful, painstaking offi cials in America, and his acceptance of the articles of incorporation shows that he was satisfied that they were correct, and the members of the company think should completely squelch the ill judged attempt which is being made to declare them illegal. A NEW ACADEMY. The Contract Let for the Build ing at Ramona. The contract has been let for a con vent and academy at Ramona, a few miles outside of this city. This will be a branch of the establishment of the Sisters of the Holy Name, and will cost $36,000. The plans were drawn by Bryan J. Clinch, of San Francisco, and are for a building three stories in height, with a basement. It will be built of brick and will be plain but neat, with a sufficient number of windows to light the class rooms perfectly, and when completed it will contain accommoda tions for eighty boarders. The designs have been drawn with a view of permit ting additions to be made if necessary without injuring the symmetry of the building. Mr. Clinch was hers a few days ago and took the surveyors to Ra mona. They Eet the stakes for the building, and the contractors will start the work of construction at an early date. The building will be situ ated on elevated ground and will have a view of the surrounding towns, which will be visible from the reception par lors. It is intended to make the stan dard of this academy high so as to com pare favorably with that of the convent of Notre Dame at San Jose. EXCURSION NEWS. Two Parties to Arrive To.Day—llisr Raymond Trains. Advices were received yesterday that a Raymond & Whitcomb excursion run ning in two sections and consisting of twelve carloads will leave Kansas City this morning for Lob Angeles via the Santa Fe, so they will arrive here on Saturday next. A dispatch was also re ceived at the Southern Pacific to the effect that ninety Raymond excursionists , over the Sunset route via New Orleans were on their way to Southern California . and will arrive in Los Angeles at 9:50 p. m. on Tuesday next. A Walters excur sion of three carloads via the Chicago and Alton and Southern Pacific and a Warner Broe. party of about 170 people , will arrive in the city this morning, so it % looks as if the long-talked-of rush of tourist travel is coming at last. The passenger agents say that the remarkable mildness of tbe winter back East has hurt the excursion business so far and think that the blizzard that raged on the northeast of the Atlantic seaboard last week will start the ball rolling in real earnest.
