OFF TO ST. LOUIS.
Glenalvin Btarta liut to Sign Baseball
Player**
1 Ten. R. J. Glenalvin, field marshal of
the Los Angeleß baseball clnb, started
for St. Louis last night, from which
point he will base hie operations in se
curing a team for the coming season.
Tbe time is now rather limited, as the
players will have to report for duty not
later than March 10th, but he thinks he
will be able to accomplish hia mission
in time.
One of the first things to be done will
be to find ont as nearly as possible what
changes are to be made in tbe rales, and
then find the players to fit the proposed
new order of things. All of this means
hard work for the captain.
Manager Lindley has associated with
himself, as secretary of the league, Dr.
Kennedy, a gentleman who was identi
fied with the league in tbe same capac
ity last year, and who has always been
prominently connected with field sports
and general athletics in Los Angeles.
The selection in thiß case is more than a
good one.
The players this year will report for
doty at San Diego, wheie they will do
the usual warming np, and work off the
superfluous adipose.

A special meeting of the hoard of di

was held yesterday to consider the regu

Miss KelßO, the librarian, reported
that 21,770 books have been delivered
during January for home ueo, 9884 for
use in the reading rooms, 1180 through
the schools and 3222 reference room

were 429 new members added, making
the total membership 10,688 to date,
t here were 120 books: donated and 432
purchased, making 30,226 volumes in
The library. The constantly increasing
crowdß of people who make use of the
library has taxed the limit of space at
its command, and complaints aro made
daily by the public. Something must be
done to relieve the present state of af
fairs, and the only practicable plan
seems to be in establishing delivery sta
tions for the distribution of books.
Upon motion the report of the lib
rarian was ordered referred to the com
mittee on administration to confer with
the committee of the city council regard
ing the matter of more room and some
provision of relief.

DEATH OF THOS. B. BROWN.
The Passing Away of a Widely Re

The community was shocked yesterday
on, hearing of the death of Thos. B.
Brown, the well-known attorney.
Yesterday morning Mrs. Brown arose,

Mr. Brown waa one of the most re
spected and ablest attorneya in thia
city, where he haß reeided for a number
of years. Before the election of Judge

His wife, who waa a Misa Patton, aur

Mason of high standing. He haa been
subject to attacks of heart disease, sev
